Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Components and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Gather two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×250×300mm), six shelf boards (19×250×800mm), one plywood back panel (4mm thickness, 800×300mm), sixteen 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-brackets. Prepare tools: electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 800 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp; check each board visually at purchase and select those with warp under 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are the lifeline for tipping prevention; never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber for warping, cracking, and knots before purchase; assembling boards warped over 1mm causes shelf distortion.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and prone to breaking during movement; stand it upright immediately after cutting for storage.
  2. 2

    Securing the Work Space

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where you can stand a 300mm tall bookshelf. Ceiling height should be 2200mm or more, and floor space approximately 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay blue sheets and support long materials using two saw horses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying the bookshelf on the floor; standing it up is the final step. Assembly is feasible even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • It is difficult to stand the assembled bookshelf alone; two people recommended for safety.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing; confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Create Cut List and Request Cutting

    ≈ 20 min

Submit cut list to home center for two side boards (300mm length), six shelf boards (800mm length), and one back panel (800×300mm). When cutting yourself, support long pieces with two saw horses and cut pulling the saw towards you. Aim for cut accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting cost per cut is 30-50 yen; total about 1000 yen for all cuts, reducing time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Shelf boards being the same length can be stacked and cut together for highest accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF lumber warps easily even with straight cuts; use a guide to ensure straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and can warp upwards during cutting if not properly supported underneath.
  4. 4

    Sanding All Components (#120 → #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components starting with #120 grit and finishing with #240. Pay special attention to sanding the shelf support surfaces on side boards, the top and bottom surfaces of shelf boards, and all cut edges. Rounding shelf edges that the hands touch improves handling. After sanding, vacuum all wood dust thoroughly.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Sanding shelf surfaces smooth facilitates smooth insertion and removal of books.
    • Cut edges tend to have raised fibers; start with #120 grit and sand carefully.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding can alter dimensions. Use #120 primarily and #240 only for finishing.
    • Rounding edges too much causes a clumsy look; keep radius around 2mm.
  5. 5

Mark Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards together and mark the positions for fixing six shelf boards with pencil. Shelf intervals can be six tiers of 300mm from bottom up (total 1800mm) or adjusted per design with wider spacing at top for display. Align the two side boards fully so their markings coincide by marking simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions match perfectly on both sides.
    • Choose shelf intervals based on book sizes such as A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and bunko size (150mm) for easier storage.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned shelf positions cause shelves to be skewed; simultaneous marking on clamped boards is essential.
    • Forget that shelf board thickness is 19mm when calculating spacing, which makes actual intervals narrower.
  6. 6

    Prepare Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outer side of side boards towards the shelf board edges, piercing through side boards into shelf boards by 10mm (total 29mm depth, including 19mm side board thickness). Use masking tape on drill bit as depth stop to avoid drilling too far.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot holes are about 70% of the 4.2mm screw shank diameter, which effectively prevents wood splitting.
    • Each shelf requires two pilot holes on each side board, total 24 holes for six shelves; be certain none are missed.

    Watch out

    • If pilot holes are too shallow, screws won't seat fully; drilling slightly deeper than calculated adds security.
    • Avoid drilling through shelf board and protruding on opposite side by limiting drill depth with tape.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fix Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor and stand six shelf boards on it aligned to marked positions. Temporarily fix with F-type clamps. Use carpenter's square to check shelf boards are perpendicular to side board; if square can't fit, confirm by eye.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble shelf boards from bottom up for stability.
    • Ideally use one clamp per shelf board (six clamps total); if not available, use two clamps sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing with incorrect right angles causes the whole assembly to become parallelogram-shaped; always verify with carpenter's square.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges prevent back panel attachment later.
  8. 8

    Screw Fix One Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws into pilot holes through the side board outer side into shelf boards. Use two screws per shelf per side (total 12 screws for one side). Screw heads should be flush or recessed up to 0.5mm below side board surface. Set electric driver torque medium, finishing final tightening by turning screw manually one quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slightly stagger two screws vertically for better withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads leave visible holes, optionally fill with wood dowels afterward to conceal.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws on 19mm SPF lumber edges causes splitting; medium torque limit needed.
    • If screws are angled and protrude on opposite side, remove screws, fill holes with wood filler, and re-drive screws at different position.
  9. 9

Prepare to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly with one side board and shelves fixed. Bring the other side board to the opposite side, align the ends of shelves to marked positions on side board, and clamp temporarily. Confirm the whole assembly is upright and check right angles.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step recommended for two people: one holding, one clamping, for precision.
    • Use originally marked lines on opposite side board; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Trying to work alone can cause shelves to fall and get damaged; always work with two people or lean assembly against wall during work.
  10. 10

    Screw Fix Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from opposite side board outer side into shelf boards same as the first side: two screws per shelf, six shelves, total 12 screws. This completes main structure fixing for side boards and shelves.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, check shelves for level with level. If any shelf tilts, loosen screws to adjust then re-tighten.
    • Do not screw both sides simultaneously as this causes distortion; complete one side fully before fixing opposite side.

    Watch out

    • Fixing both sides simultaneously can distort the frame; fix one side fully before the other.
  11. 11

Check Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place assembled bookshelf on floor and check each shelf board's level with a level. From front, measure both diagonals (left top to right bottom and right top to left bottom) with tape measure; ensure difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust; add screws to secure.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion; correct before attaching back panel.
    • Back panel increases rigidity; fix distortions prior to back panel installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf bowing (center sagging) worsens under book weight; shelf lengths up to 600mm acceptable, over 1000mm requires reinforcements.
  12. 12

    Prepare to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Place 4mm plywood back panel (800×300mm) against bookshelf rear. Align four corners, confirm back panel diagonals coincide with bookshelf diagonals (back panel corrects final distortion). Once positioned, lightly tape back panel to shelf assembly with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is crucial for preventing distortion; attaching it slightly skewed reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood can be easily stapled; use a stapler or pre-drill pilot holes for small nails.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than bookshelf, trim protruding parts; if smaller, leave uniform gaps under 5mm along edges.
  13. 13

    Staple Fix Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Fix back panel to side boards and shelf boards with a stapler (15mm staples) or small nails. Space staples/nails every 100-150mm around the perimeter and at shelf board locations. Start fixing from corners then along diagonals sequentially to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler is faster and cost-effective (1500-2500 yen at home centers); worthwhile investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf board positions on back panel with pencil before stapling to avoid missed fixing.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside may damage books; 15mm staples suit 19mm thick lumber.
    • Fixing only the four edges without fixing shelf board positions allows back panel to lift when sagging occurs.
  14. 14

    Prepare L-bracket Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare four 50mm L-brackets to be installed at upper rear left and right sides of bookshelf. Position two brackets per side: one attaches to bookshelf top edge, other attaches to wall. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud finders from 100 yen stores have low accuracy; home center models priced 1000-2000 yen recommended.
    • Wall studs usually spaced at 455mm; once one stud is found, others can be estimated easily.

    Watch out

    • If wall is only drywall (gypsum board) and screws don't hold in studs, tipping prevention fails.
    • If L-bracket positions don't align with studs, shift the brackets horizontally to center screws on studs.
  15. 15

    Attach L-brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Screw four L-brackets onto outer side of bookshelf side boards near top using 38mm coarse-thread screws through manufacturer's screw holes. Attach brackets flush with side boards or within 5mm offset, ensuring bracket extends vertically outwards for wall fixing.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure the bracket bend faces the wall side and screw holes face bookshelf side when attaching.

    Watch out

    • Incorrectly angled brackets create gaps between bracket and wall when fixed; check level carefully.
  16. 16

Position Bookshelf and Fix to Wall

    ≈ 20 min

Carry bookshelf upright to installation location with two people recommended. Place it flush against wall. Drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (included or separately purchased) through L-bracket holes on wall side into wall studs. Secure all four points to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for wall fixing; 45-50mm screws needed to reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step to prevent injury or death by falling during earthquakes; do not skimp.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack strength; screws must engage studs.
    • If gap between bookshelf and wall exceeds 5mm, insert shims before fixing; brackets are ineffective if installed while floating.
  17. 17

    Clean Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Vacuum entire bookshelf and wipe with dry cloth to completely remove wood dust, oil, and fingerprints. Quality of cleaning before finishing greatly affects final appearance. Optionally mask plywood back panel before finishing since it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Perform wiping in this order: dry wipe, damp wipe, dry wipe again for perfect cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough painted surfaces; check with lighting.
  18. 18

Apply First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Brush oil stain (such as Watco Oil, Kinura) on entire bookshelf following this order: outer side of side boards, front surfaces of shelf boards, inner surfaces of shelf boards, then back panel. After applying, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off excess with dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total volume for first coat as absorption is high.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Procedure is apply oil, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off excess; not wiping leaves stickiness.
    • Use 30-50mm width brush for this work; too large brushes miss details.

    Watch out

    • Not wiping off leaves sticky surfaces for over a week; always wipe off.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and can cause uneven color; apply thin coats and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

Apply Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After the first coat dries for 24 hours, apply second coat with 1/3 to 1/2 the volume of first coat. Wipe off excess again. Two coats deepen color and enhance protection. Allow complete drying for 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects uneven color from first coat. Apply thin and evenly.
    • For deeper color, an optional third coat is possible.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget to wipe second coat; thick coating causes unevenness.
    • During drying, store indoors avoiding dust and insects adhering.
  20. 20

    Completion, Start Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After oil has fully dried (48 hours), arrange books and start use. Place heavy books on bottom shelves and lighter books on upper shelves for better balance and stability. After one week of use, re-check screws and L-bracket tightness and tighten if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) on bottom two shelves; put paperback/small books on upper shelves to reduce weight.
    • Refinishing oil every 3-5 years restores gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Loading books immediately after completion causes oil transfer onto books; dry at least 48 hours before use.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy seasons. Bookshelf wood also warps if humid.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
