Final Check of Materials and Tools
≈ 15 minPrepare 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x8 (19×200×2200mm), 6 shelf boards (19×200×600mm), 1 back panel of 4mm plywood (600×2200mm), 56 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-brackets 50mm. Tools needed are electric driver, handsaw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, stapler or fine nails.
MeasureW 600 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 20Tip
- SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each piece visually before purchase and select ones with warp under 1mm.
- L-brackets and screws are the safety lifeline against tipping. Never omit them.
Watch out
- Confirm each SPF lumber piece for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using warped lumber over 1mm causes shelf board distortion.
- 4mm plywood back panel is thin and fragile. Stand it upright immediately after cutting to avoid breakage.
- 2
Securing the Workspace
≈ 10 minEnsure a workspace tall enough to stand the 2200mm high bookshelf. A ceiling height above 2200mm and floor space around 1500×1200mm are ideal. Lay a blue sheet and use two sawhorses to support long material.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 2 / 20Tip
- Assemble the bookshelf lying down on the floor; raising it upright is the final step. This allows working even in narrow rooms.
Watch out
- Standing the assembled bookshelf alone is difficult. Two people are recommended.
- If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when stood up. Confirm height in advance.
- 3
Making Cut List and Requesting Cuts
≈ 20 minSubmit the cut list for 2 side boards (2200mm), 6 shelf boards (600mm), and 1 back panel (600×2200mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support long pieces (2200mm) on two sawhorses and use push cutting. Aim for cutting accuracy within ±2mm.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 3 / 20Tip
- Cutting fee is 30-50 yen per cut. Entire cutting costs about 1000 yen and saves 30 minutes, providing immediate delivery.
- Since all 6 shelf boards have identical dimensions, bundle them and cut simultaneously for highest precision.
Watch out
- SPF 19mm thick lumber warps easily even in straight cuts. Use a guide to ensure straight cuts.
- 4mm plywood is soft and bends if unsupported during cutting. Support from below to prevent warping.
- 4
Sanding All Components (#120 then #240)
≈ 40 minSand all components starting with #120 grit, then finish with #240 grit. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces of side boards, top and bottom of shelf boards, and cut ends. Rounding shelf edges where hands touch makes handling easier. Remove all dust thoroughly with a vacuum after sanding.
Sand#120SandSTEP 4 / 20Tip
- Smooth shelf surfaces improve ease of placing and removing books.
- Cut ends have raised fibers; start sanding with #120 grit carefully.
Watch out
- SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding can change dimensions. Use #120 as main sanding and #240 only for finishing.
- Over-rounding corners looks clumsy; keep rounded edges about 2mm radius.
- 5
Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards
≈ 15 minLay the two side boards side by side and mark the positions for six shelf boards with pencil. Shelf spacing is 300mm for six levels from bottom up (total 1800mm used), or design other wider ornamental top shelves as desired. Align the two side boards to mark simultaneously so shelf positions are identical on both sides.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 5 / 20Tip
- Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure matching shelf positions.
- Use standard book sizes (A4: 297mm height, A5: 210mm height, paperback: 150mm) as guides when deciding shelf spacing.
Watch out
- If left and right shelf markings are misaligned, shelf boards will be slanted. Mark both boards simultaneously while clamped.
- Forgetting the 19mm shelf board thickness leads to narrower actual spacing.
- 6
Preparing Pilot Holes
≈ 20 minDrill 3mm pilot holes at the marked positions. Drill from outside of side boards through to the shelf wood ends. Use masking tape to mark the drill depth target: through the 19mm side board plus 10mm into the shelf board, totaling 29mm.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 6 / 20Tip
- 3mm pilot hole is about 70% of the coarse-thread screw shaft diameter (4.2mm), preventing wood splitting.
- Each shelf board requires two pilot holes left and right in the side board: 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 holes total. Double-check none are missed.
Watch out
- If pilot holes are too shallow, screws will not fully enter. Drill slightly deeper for safety.
- Prevent drill through the shelf board’s opposite side by limiting depth with tape.
- 7
Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board
≈ 20 minLay one side board on the floor. Stand the 6 shelf boards at marked positions. Use F-clamps to temporarily fix; check the right angle between side and shelf boards with a carpenter's square. If square cannot fit, visually confirm alignment.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 7 / 20Tip
- Assemble shelf boards starting from the bottom for stability.
- Use one clamp per shelf board if possible (6 clamps ideal). If only 2 clamps available, work sequentially.
Watch out
- Fixing with incorrect right angles causes the whole assembly to deform into a parallelogram. Always check with square.
- Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges prevent back panel installation later.
- 8
Screwing One Side Board
≈ 15 minDrive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from side board outside into shelf board wood ends. Use 2 screws per position, totaling 12 screws for 6 shelves. Screw heads should be flush or slightly countersunk (up to 0.5mm). Set electric driver torque medium and finish final tightening by hand about 1/4 turn.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 8 / 20Tip
- Place the 2 screws at each position slightly offset vertically to increase pull-out strength.
- If screw heads are visible and bothersome, wood plugs can be applied as an option.
Watch out
- Over-tightening screws may split the 19mm thick wood ends. Use medium torque.
- If screws enter crookedly and protrude on the other side, remove screw, fill hole with wood filler, and re-screw in a different position.
- 9
Preparing to Attach the Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minStand the assembly with one side board and attached shelf boards. Align the other side board at the opposite shelf board ends, matching pencil marks. Temporarily clamp in place. Confirm the whole unit is perfectly vertical with right angle checks.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 9 / 20Tip
- Two-person work is recommended: one holds assembly steady while the other clamps.
- The opposite side board’s markings should already be drawn; do not redraw.
Watch out
- Attempting alone may cause shelves to fall off and damage floor. Always work with two people or prop assembly against wall.
- 10
Screwing the Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minDrive 38mm coarse-thread screws from outside of opposite side board through pilot holes into shelf boards: 2 screws each position × 6 shelves = 12 screws. This completes fixing both side boards and six shelf boards, finalizing primary bookshelf structure.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 10 / 20Tip
- After fixing both sides, check all shelf boards with level for horizontal alignment. If any shelf is tilted, loosen and adjust screws before final tightening.
Watch out
- Screwing both sides simultaneously can distort the structure. Always finish one side’s screws before starting the other.
- 11
Checking Overall Horizontal and Diagonal Dimensions
≈ 15 minPlace the assembled frame on the floor. Use level to verify each shelf’s horizontality. Measure the diagonals (upper left to lower right and upper right to lower left) with tape measure from front view. Confirm the diagonal difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust, and add screws to secure.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 11 / 20Tip
- Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion. Correct before attaching back panel.
- The back panel increases rigidity. Correct any distortions before installing it.
Watch out
- Shelf board sagging (center dips) worsens under book weight. Designs with shelf length 600mm are acceptable; consider reinforcement for shelves over 1000mm long.
- 12
Preparing to Attach Back Panel
≈ 10 minPlace the 4mm plywood back panel (600×2200mm) on the bookshelf’s back surface. Align all four corners and ensure the panel’s diagonals match the bookshelf. Back panel fitting allows final correction of frame distortion. Temporarily tape the back panel with masking tape.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 12 / 20Tip
- The back panel is crucial to suppress frame distortion. Attaching crookedly reduces rigidity.
- 4mm plywood can be fastened efficiently with a stapler. If using fine nails, drill pilot holes in advance.
Watch out
- If back panel is larger than frame, trim excess. If smaller, keep about 5mm evenly spaced gaps around edges.
- 13
Stapling Back Panel
≈ 20 minStaple or use fine nails to secure back panel to side and shelf boards. Use 15mm staples approximately every 100-150mm around the edges and along shelf board lines. Start from corners and staple along diagonals in order to prevent distortion.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 13 / 20Tip
- Staplers cost about 1500-2500 yen at home centers and are faster to use than fine nails, so worth investment for bookshelf making.
- Mark shelf board positions with pencil on back panel before stapling to prevent missing fastening at shelf locations.
Watch out
- Staple points that protrude inside can damage books. 15mm staples are appropriate for 19mm thick boards.
- Only stapling along back panel edges without shelf board locations causes back panel to bow when sagging occurs.
- 14
Preparing to Attach L-Brackets
≈ 15 minAttach four L-brackets 50mm total, two each at the left and right upper back edges of the bookshelf. One side affixed to bookshelf top; the other side attaches to wall. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs in advance.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 14 / 20Tip
- 100 yen store stud finders have low accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
- Studs are usually spaced every 455mm; after finding one, adjacent positions can be estimated.
Watch out
- Fixing to only drywall without reaching studs does not prevent tipping.
- If bracket positions and studs don't align, adjust bracket horizontally to center screws on studs.
- 15
Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf
≈ 10 minFix each of the four L-brackets to the bookshelf’s side board upper outside using 38mm coarse-thread screws through the bracket’s screw holes. Brackets should be flush with side boards or have less than 5mm gap and extend vertically outward to connect to wall.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 15 / 20Tip
- Ensure L-bracket orientation with bend pointing to wall side and screw holes facing bookshelf side.
Watch out
- Mounting brackets crookedly causes gaps between bracket and wall when fixing to wall. Use a level to confirm alignment.
- 16
Bookshelf Placement and Wall Fixing
≈ 20 minWith two people, move the bookshelf into place upright and push it flush to the wall. Using the L-brackets’ wall-side screw holes, drill 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (provided or bought separately) into the studs in the wall. Fix all four points securely to complete tipping prevention.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 16 / 20Tip
- 38mm screws are too short for wall fixing. Use 45-50mm screws to reach studs.
- Wall fixing is the most critical step; skipping it risks injury or death from earthquake tipping. Do not neglect this.
Watch out
- Drywall anchors alone lack strength. Always screw into a stud.
- If there is a gap larger than 5mm between bookshelf and wall, insert shims before fixing. Gapped brackets lose effectiveness.
- 17
Cleaning Before Finishing
≈ 10 minVacuum and wipe the entire bookshelf with a dry cloth to completely remove dust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality before finishing significantly affects final look. Optionally mask the plywood back panel due to its quick paint absorption.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 17 / 20Tip
- Wiping before finishing follows three steps: dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe for perfect cleaning.
Watch out
- Leftover wood dust causes rough paint finish. Use lighting to check surfaces.
- 18
First Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 40 minApply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) over all surfaces with a 30-50mm brush: side board exterior → shelf board tops → shelf board undersides → back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total oil amount for the first coat as absorption is high.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 18 / 20Tip
- The procedure is apply → wait 10-15 minutes → wipe off. Skipping wiping causes sticky residue.
- 30-50mm wide brush fits bookshelf size well; too large brushes don’t reach details.
Watch out
- Not wiping leaves stickiness for more than a week. Always wipe off.
- Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and unevenly; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
- 19
Second Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 25 minAfter 24 hours drying of first coat, apply the second coat using about 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of the first. Wipe off excess as before. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 19 / 20Tip
- Second coat smooths out color unevenness from first coat. Apply uniformly thinly.
- Apply a third coat if a deeper color is desired.
Watch out
- Do not forget wiping for second coat; thick application causes unevenness.
- Keep drying area indoors to avoid dust and insects adhering during drying.
- 20
Completion, Start of Use, and Inspection
≈ 15 minAfter complete drying for 48 hours, place books and start using the bookshelf. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for stability. After one week, inspect screws and L-bracket fastenings and tighten if needed.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 20 / 20Tip
- Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) on the bottom two shelves. Use paperbacks and single volumes on top for weight reduction.
- Redo oil finishing every 3-5 years to restore luster and protection.
Watch out
- Loading books immediately after finishing may transfer oil onto books. Ensure 48 hours drying.
- Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during humid seasons to prevent shelf warping.
Warnings
- ⚠️Always drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
