Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Components and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×300×2000mm), 6 shelf boards (19×300×1200mm), 1 plywood back board (4mm thick, 1200×2000mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-brackets 50mm. Tools include electric screwdriver, handsaw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 1200 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. When purchasing, check each board for warp visually and select boards with less than 1mm warp.
    • L-brackets and screws are the lifeline for 'tipping prevention'. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber piece for warping, cracking, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped more than 1mm will cause shelf boards to distort.
    • 4mm plywood back boards are thin and easily break when moving. After cutting, store standing immediately.
  2. 2

    Securing Work Space

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace that can accommodate a bookshelf standing 2000mm tall. Ceiling height should be at least 2200mm, and a floor area of approximately 1500×1200mm is recommended. Lay down a blue sheet and support long materials on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor. Raising the bookshelf upright is the final step. Workable even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Erecting the assembled bookshelf is difficult alone. Two-person teamwork ensures safety.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf will hit the ceiling when raised. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Requesting Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list for 2 side boards at 2000mm, 6 shelf boards at 1200mm, and a back board 1200×2000mm to the home center. If cutting by yourself, support long boards (2000mm) on two sawhorses and cut by pushing. Aim for cutting accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cut charge is 30-50 yen per cut. Requesting all cuts at once costs about 1000 yen and shortens time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Since the 6 shelf boards share the same length, bundling them and cutting once yields the most accuracy.

    Watch out

    • Even straight cuts on 19mm thick SPF lumber tend to warp. Use a guide to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and deforms if unsupported underneath during cutting.
  4. 4

    Sanding All Components (#120 → #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components starting with #120 grit followed by #240 grit sandpaper. Focus carefully on side board shelf support surfaces, upper and lower faces of shelf boards, and wood edges (ends). Round shelf edges touching hands for easier handling. After sanding, thoroughly vacuum all sawdust.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth shelf board surfaces make it easier to insert and remove books.
    • Wood edges (cut cross-section) have raised fibers and need particularly careful sanding starting from #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding distorts dimensions. Mainly use #120 grit, and #240 only for finishing.
    • Excessive rounding of edges looks crude. Limit curves to approximately 2mm radius.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side boards side by side and mark the positions for six shelf boards with a pencil. Either evenly space six shelves at 300mm intervals from bottom (total 1800mm), or create wider upper decorative shelf spacing as per design. Align two side boards precisely and mark simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions match perfectly.
    • Use book heights as references: A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and pocket size (150mm) to determine shelf spacing for easier storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions mismatch between sides, shelf boards will be installed crooked. Simultaneous marking with clamped boards is mandatory.
    • Do not forget to account for 19mm shelf board thickness when calculating spacing, else actual space will be smaller.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at markings. Drill from side board outer face through to shelf board wood end. Use masking tape on drill bit to mark depth. Drill through the side board thickness (19mm) plus 10mm into shelf board, totaling 29mm deep.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole equals 70% the diameter of 38mm coarse-thread screws (4.2mm shaft diameter), effectively preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf requires 2 pilot holes each side, totaling 24 pilot holes for 6 shelves. Double-check no holes are missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from fully seating. Drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Prevent drilling through the back of shelf boards by using tape depth stop on drill bit.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Place the first side board flat on the floor and stand the six shelf boards at the marked positions. Use F-clamps to temporarily fix them. Check with carpenter's square to confirm right angles between side board and shelf boards. Visually check areas where square doesn't fit.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Install shelf boards sequentially from bottom for better stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board is ideal; with only 2 clamps, proceed sequentially while clamping.

    Watch out

    • If fixed with incorrect right angles, the whole assembly becomes a parallelogram. Always verify right angle with square.
    • If shelf boards protrude beyond side board edges, the back board cannot be installed later.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from side board outer face into shelf boards. Attach 2 screws per joint, totaling 12 screws for 6 shelves. Screw heads should be flush with or recessed up to 0.5mm below side board surface. Use medium torque on impact driver; final tightening by hand about quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slightly offset the two screws vertically to increase withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are visible, optionally fill holes with wood dowels later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening can split 19mm SPF lumber edges. Stop tightening at medium torque.
    • If screws enter at an angle and protrude from opposite side, remove and fill hole with wood filler then reinstall at correct position.
  9. 9

Preparing for Opposite Side Board Attachment

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the partly assembled unit upright and position the second side board on the opposite side. Align the free ends of shelf boards to the marked positions on the second side board and clamp temporarily. Verify right angles with the unit standing straight.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person operation is recommended: one to support the unit and one to clamp for accuracy.
    • Second side board marking was done initially; no re-marking is needed.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this step alone may cause shelf boards to fall and damage the floor. Always work with two people or brace the unit against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screwing Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outer face of the second side board into shelf boards. Use 2 screws per joint for 6 shelves, totaling 12 screws. This completes fixing of side boards and shelf boards, forming the main structure of the bookshelf.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After securing both sides, verify that each shelf board is level using a level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws to adjust.
    • Do screws on one side first, then the other side, to avoid distortion.

    Watch out

    • Driving screws on both sides simultaneously causes warping. Fix one side fully before the other.
  11. 11

Checking Overall Level and Diagonal Measurement

    ≈ 15 min

Set the assembled bookshelf on the floor. Check the level of every shelf board with a level. Measure diagonals (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) using a tape measure; ensure difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust, then fix with additional screws.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference exceeding 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion. Correct before installing the back board.
    • The back board design increases rigidity; fix distortions before assembly.

    Watch out

    • Shelf boards sagging in the middle worsen under book weight. Shelf length of 600mm is acceptable; length over 1000mm needs reinforcement consideration.
  12. 12

    Preparing Back Board Attachment

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back board against the rear of the unit. Align corners and verify diagonal measurements match the unit (installing the back board finalizes distortion correction). Once positioned, lightly attach the back board to the unit with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • The back board is an important structural member preventing distortion. Slight misalignment reduces rigidity.
    • Thin 4mm plywood can be fixed easily with a stapler. If using small nails, pre-drill pilot holes.

    Watch out

    • If back board exceeds unit size, trim protruding edges. If smaller, maintain even gaps within 5mm.
  13. 13

    Attaching Back Board with Stapler

    ≈ 20 min

Attach the back board to side boards and shelf boards with a stapler (about 15mm staples) or small nails. Space fasteners every 100-150mm, including along all edges and at shelf board locations. Begin stapling at corners and along diagonals sequentially to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers cost 1500-2500 yen at home centers, quicker than nails; a worthwhile investment for bookshelf projects.
    • Mark shelf board positions on the back board beforehand to avoid missing fastening onto shelf boards.

    Watch out

    • Stapler staples protruding inside the unit may damage books. 15mm staples are suitable for 19mm thick lumber.
    • Staple only along the four edges and shelf board lines; insufficient fastening leads to back board bowing.
  14. 14

    Preparing L-Bracket Attachment

    ≈ 15 min

Position four 50mm L-brackets at the upper rear of the unit, two each on left and right. One arm attaches to the bookshelf top edge, the other is intended for wall fixing. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud finders from 100 yen shops have low accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Studs are commonly spaced at 455mm intervals. Locating one helps estimate location of neighboring studs.

    Watch out

    • If dry wall only is behind fixing points, screws won't hold and tipping prevention fails. Always fasten into studs.
    • If bracket positions don't align with studs, shift brackets to center screws on studs.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-brackets to the upper side board outer faces using 38mm coarse-thread screws into the bracket's pre-drilled holes. Fix brackets flush with or slightly (up to 5mm) raised from the side board surface. Brackets should project perpendicularly from the bookshelf toward the wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure L-brackets are installed with the bent arm facing the wall and the screw holes facing the bookshelf.

    Watch out

    • Improper bracket angle causes gaps between bracket and wall, reducing fixing strength. Check with a level.
  16. 16

Setting Up Bookshelf and Wall Mounting

    ≈ 20 min

Erect and carry the bookshelf to its final location (two people recommended). Position it flush against the wall and attach screws through the L-bracket wall-side holes into wall studs using 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (either included or separately acquired). Secure all four fixing points firmly to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Use 45-50mm screws for wall side to reach studs; 38mm screws are too short.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step; avoid cutting corners to prevent injury or fatalities from earthquake tipping.

    Watch out

    • Dry wall anchors alone are insufficient strength; always fasten into studs.
    • If gap between bookshelf and wall exceeds 5mm, insert shims before fixing. A loose bracket is ineffective.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Finishing

    ≈ 10 min

Thoroughly clean the entire bookshelf with a vacuum and dry cloth to remove all sawdust, oils, and fingerprints. Quality of cleaning drastically influences final finish. For the plywood back board, masking prior to finishing is optional since it absorbs finish quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Clean wiping before finishing is best done in three steps: dry wipe, wet wipe, and dry wipe again.

    Watch out

    • Remaining sawdust causes roughness in the finish layer. Check with lighting to confirm.
  18. 18

First Coat Application of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) with a brush over all surfaces. Apply in order: external side boards, shelf board upper faces, shelf board undersides, then back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total amount in first coat due to absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Apply, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off when using oil stain; failing to wipe leaves stickiness.
    • Use 30-50mm wide brushes; wider brushes don't reach detail areas well.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe off leaves sticky surface for over a week; always wipe off.
    • Plywood back board absorbs quickly and can result in uneven color; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Application of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After first coat dries for 24 hours, apply second coat with 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of the first. Remember wiping off excess. Two coats deepen color and enhance protection. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects color unevenness from first. Apply thin and evenly.
    • If deeper color desired, consider a third coat.

    Watch out

    • Do not skip wiping off after second coat; thick coatings cause uneven finish.
    • During drying, keep indoors free from dust and insects.
  20. 20

    Completion, Starting Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After complete drying of oil (48 hours), place books and begin use. Arrange heavy books on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for stability. After one week of use, inspect screws and L-bracket fastenings and tighten if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Place heavy books like encyclopedias concentrated on the bottom two shelves; lighter books like paperbacks on upper shelves reduces stress.
    • Reapply oil approximately every 3-5 years to restore luster and protective effect.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing may transfer oil stain to books. Always wait at least 48 hours for drying.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy season, as humidity can cause bookshelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
  • ⚠️Always locate studs before fixing to the wall (do not fix solely to drywall).
