Build steps

  1. 1

Decide on Design and Installation Location

    ≈ 30 min

Determine the design and installation location of the garden nameplate (300×25×200mm). Draft the layout of letters and patterns to actual size on graph paper or plain paper. Decide in advance whether it will be hung or wall-mounted.

    Measure
    W 300 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 9

    Tip

    • Choose letter size readable from a distance; 50mm or larger recommended.
    • If letter spacing is too narrow, it becomes hard to read. Leave spacing about equal to letter width.
    • Overlaying the draft layout on the board and tracing with carbon paper ensures accuracy.

    Watch out

    • Do not draw the design directly on the wood as it cannot be corrected; always make a paper prototype first.
    • If ventilation and rain exposure at the installation location are not considered, deterioration can occur within one year.
  2. 2

    Prepare Materials

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare one solid cedar board (25×200×200mm), two reinforcement slats of SPF lumber 1×2 (19×38×280mm), two stainless steel hanging hardware pieces, ten 30mm coarse-thread screws, a wood burning pen (or router), and outdoor paint (such as Osmo Color).

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 9

    Tip

    • Solid cedar boards have rich grain patterns; choose the side with attractive knots and wood grain as the front.
    • Inspect 25mm thick solid boards for warping at purchase; warped boards will cause curvature in the signboard.
    • Wood burning pens (wood burning tool) can be obtained for about 1000 yen.

    Watch out

    • Avoid plywood as it delaminates outdoors.
    • Boards thinner than 15mm risk breakthrough during lettering carving.
  3. 3

    Sanding

    ≈ 20 min

Sand the cedar board in order: #120, #180, then #240 grit. The signboard surface should be especially smooth for lettering. Chamfer edges by 1-2mm to prevent injury. Sand the reinforcement slats similarly.

    Sand
    #120 → #180
    SandSTEP 3 / 9

    Tip

    • Surface smoothness determines the beauty of the lettering; sand carefully.
    • Finishing with #240 grit makes wood burning pen lines clear.
    • Also sand the edges of the board to ensure paint absorption.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient sanding causes lettering to appear blotchy.
    • Sanding creates a lot of dust; perform in a ventilated place such as a balcony or garage.
  4. 4

    Transfer the Design

    ≈ 20 min

Transfer the full-size design onto the board surface using carbon paper. Trace the outlines darkly with pencil and confirm there is no position shift. The faint lines will serve as guides for burning or carving.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 4 / 9

    Tip

    • Carbon paper can be purchased at 100-yen shops; trace firmly with pencil.
    • Make multiple copies of the design before transfer so you can retry if needed.
    • Use a level or ruler to confirm letters are horizontal.

    Watch out

    • If carbon lines are too dark, they become difficult to erase later; transfer lightly.
    • Do not wet the board after transfer as lines may blur; ensure dry condition before painting.
  5. 5

Letter Engraving (Wood Burning or Router)

    ≈ 60 min

Using a wood burning pen, trace over the transfer lines at 300-400℃ for 5-10 seconds each. Alternatively, carve grooves 3-5mm deep with a router or trim router. Practice on scrap wood first.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 5 / 9

    Tip

    • With wood burning, gently stroke rather than pressing hard to avoid overly dark burn marks.
    • Secure the board firmly when routing; instability causes jagged lines.
    • Trace letter outlines first, then fill inside for dimensional effect.

    Watch out

    • Do not overheat wood burning pen to the point of flame to avoid fire hazard; ensure ventilation and have a water bucket ready.
    • Excessive router depth can pierce through the board.
  6. 6

    Attach Reinforcement Slats

    ≈ 25 min

Place two reinforcement slats (19×38×280mm) vertically or horizontally on the back of the board. Secure each with wood glue and four 30mm coarse-thread screws. This prevents warping and serves as base for hanging hardware installation.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 9

    Tip

    • Position slats according to future hanging hardware placement.
    • Drill 3mm pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood cracks.
    • Apply wood glue first, then drill pilot holes and screw in sequence.

    Watch out

    • Improper slat positioning will not prevent board warping.
    • Confirm that 30mm screws do not pierce through; seek clamping strength by sandwiching board thickness 25mm plus slat 19mm equals 44mm.
  7. 7

Surface Preparation and First Coat of Paint

    ≈ 30 min

Lightly finish sand with #240 grit then remove dust. Apply Osmo Color (clear or colored) with a brush. Clear paint highlights the burnt lettering. Allow to dry naturally for 2-3 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 7 / 9

    Tip

    • Osmo Color is a natural ingredient paint that preserves wood feel.
    • If using colored paint, protect lettering with masking tape before painting.
    • Choose paints offering UV protection for outdoor durability.

    Watch out

    • Thick paint layers fill in letters; apply thinly.
    • Painting under direct sunlight can cause surface drying while inside remains semi-wet; paint in shade or cloudy weather.
  8. 8

    Second Coat of Paint

    ≈ 30 min

After drying, lightly sand with #400 grit and remove dust. Apply a thin second coat. Outdoor use requires a solid paint film. Allow drying for more than 24 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 8 / 9

    Tip

    • Two coats greatly improve UV and rain resistance.
    • For intermediate sanding with #400, just smooth raised fibers.
    • Place in low-dust environment while drying.

    Watch out

    • Exposure to rain before drying causes paint film to run; check weather forecast before painting.
    • Do not apply thick second coat as it will fill letters.
  9. 9

    Attach Hanging Hardware and Install

    ≈ 30 min

Attach two stainless steel hanging hardware pieces at the reinforcement slat position on the upper edge. Secure each with four 30mm coarse-thread screws. For wall hanging, hang with chain or wire on wall hooks; for direct mounting, fix screws into wall studs.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 9 / 9

    Tip

    • Select stainless steel hardware to prevent rust and staining of signboard.
    • Chain length adjusts hanging angle; match to design.
    • When fixing to a wall, confirm stud locations using a stud finder.

    Watch out

    • Weak hardware can cause falling due to weight and wind load.
    • Drywall alone is insufficient; always anchor to studs.

Warnings

  • ⚠️For outdoor use, wood preservative coating is essential (recoating once a year recommended).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
