Build steps

  1. 1

    Measuring and Checking Installation Location

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the installation site for the small wooden storage shed (1200×900×1800mm). Check the width of the installation space, ensure a passage space of at least 600mm, and confirm the door opening range.

    Measure
    W 1200 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 13

    Tip

    • Arrange so it is not directly under gutters or over drains.
    • Leave at least a 20mm gap between walls and furniture for easier cleaning.
    • Avoid the boundary between wood decks or soil and ground to prevent wobbling.

    Watch out

    • Cannot install if the installation space is less than 1200mm wide; pre-measuring is important.
    • Outdoor installation locations often have high foot traffic; protruding placements risk tripping.
  2. 2

Creating a Cut List for Materials

    ≈ 30 min

Cut cedar boards 19mm thick into front and back boards (19×120×1200mm) ×30 pieces and side boards (19×120×900mm) ×30 pieces. The bottom board is lauan plywood 12mm (12×862×1162mm) ×1 piece. Corner posts are 2x4 lumber (38×89×1800mm) ×4 pieces. Using a home center paid cutting service is convenient.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 13

    Tip

    • Cedar boards have large variations in knots and warping; select each piece by hand.
    • The 500mm length for corner posts covers the height of front and back boards (120×4=480mm) plus a 20mm margin.
    • When using cutting service, you can specify grain alignment for better appearance.

    Watch out

    • Cedar cut ends absorb water easily; apply wood preservative carefully in later steps.
    • The 2x4 lumber actual size is 38×89mm; specify '38×89' when ordering cuts (nominal size differs).
  3. 3

    Sanding All Materials

    ≈ 40 min

Sand with #120 grit then #240 grit sandpaper. Cedar boards are soft and prone to warping and splinters; sand end grain and surface carefully. Chamfer the edges of the 2x4 corner posts to prevent snagging shoes or injury.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 13

    Tip

    • Sanding against the grain raises splinters; confirm wood grain direction.
    • Sand end grain flat first with #120 then smooth with #240; this prevents uneven painting.
    • Using an orbital sander reduces sanding time to one third; rental services are available.

    Watch out

    • Sanding produces a lot of dust; perform outdoors or in a garage with ventilation.
    • Do not paint before removing sanding dust; use compressed air or a damp cloth to clean to avoid rough surfaces.
  4. 4

Erecting and Temporarily Fixing Corner Posts

    ≈ 25 min

Stand four 2x4 lumber posts vertically at the four corners of a workbench. Temporarily fix them with clamps against the workbench to keep top and bottom level. Check verticality with a level. Ensure spacing between posts is 600mm front-to-back and 300mm side-to-side (inside measurements) using a tape measure.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 13

    Tip

    • Check verticality on two planes (front and side) aiming for zero deviation.
    • Uneven surfaces such as concrete or cushioned flooring should be leveled by placing plywood to create a flat work surface.
    • Align knots facing the same direction on all four posts for aesthetics and adjust as you position them.

    Watch out

    • If even one post is not vertical, the front, back, and side boards will be tilted upon completion.
    • Be consistent in measuring either inside or outside edges of posts for spacing; inconsistent methods cause 5-10mm errors.
  5. 5

Attaching Front and Back Boards (Starting from Bottom)

    ≈ 40 min

Place the first cedar board horizontally at the lowest front position, apply wood glue on the respective corner posts, then fasten with two 65mm coarse-thread screws on each side (4 screws total per board). Stack subsequent boards with a 5mm ventilation gap (about the thickness of one chopstick) between them. Attach 5 boards for front and 5 for back, totaling 10 boards.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 5 / 13

    Tip

    • 5mm ventilation gaps reduce moisture from shoes; closing gaps traps moisture causing mold.
    • Use chopsticks to maintain uniform spacing for ventilation gaps.
    • Drill 4mm pilot holes on the corner posts before screwing to prevent wood splitting.

    Watch out

    • Screwing 65mm screws without pilot holes splits the cedar boards; always drill pilot holes.
    • Overdriving screws causes dents on cedar surfaces; stop screw flush with the board surface.
  6. 6

Attaching Side Boards (Left and Right)

    ≈ 35 min

Attach the side boards (19×120×900mm) ×30 pieces similarly with ventilation gaps. Attach 5 boards per side. Adjust front and back boards so end grain at corners aligns perfectly before fixing side boards. Measure diagonal lengths (front-to-back diagonals) with a tape measure and ensure both are equal while proceeding.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 13

    Tip

    • Unequal diagonal lengths cause parallelogram distortion; adjust with clamps until equal.
    • Side boards are inset inside of front and back boards, so offset pilot hole positions slightly from front/back board edges.
    • For improved appearance, cut corner lumber at 45 degrees and fasten before attaching side boards if corner alignment is noticeable.

    Watch out

    • Mismatch in ventilation slit positions between side and front/back boards results in uneven appearance.
    • If diagonal difference exceeds 5mm, stored items may not fit smoothly.
  7. 7

    Processing and Installing Bottom Board

    ≈ 25 min

Using a 20mm diameter drill bit, evenly drill nine ventilation holes (3×3 layout) on the lauan plywood bottom board (262×562mm). Keep holes at least 50mm from edges and spaced over 100mm apart. Insert the bottom board under the box structure and fasten with 45mm coarse-thread screws to the four corner posts.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 7 / 13

    Tip

    • Ventilation holes allow shoe sole moisture to escape; do not reduce the number of holes.
    • Hole saws provide cleaner holes; woodworking drill bits are also acceptable.
    • Bottom board edge tape is unnecessary since the ground side is not visible.

    Watch out

    • Warped bottom boards may not contact corner posts well; check flatness and if warped, mount reversely and tighten screws to correct.
    • Holes placed too close to edges (less than 50mm) reduce structural strength.
  8. 8

Final Check of Right Angles and Diagonals

    ≈ 15 min

Check the assembled box's right angles and diagonal lengths. Measure all four interior angles with a carpenter's square and confirm deviations from 90°. Measure both diagonal lengths with a tape measure and verify difference is within 2mm. If misaligned, loosen screws, clamp to correct, then retighten.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 8 / 13

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference indicates assembly error; within 2mm is acceptable for practical use.
    • Measure on a level surface to avoid inaccurate readings.
    • Check all screws by finger to confirm none are loose or not fully set.

    Watch out

    • Ignoring distortions causes doors (or lids) to operate poorly.
    • Loose screws increase risk of wobble and collapse under shoe load over time.
  9. 9

Surface Preparation and Sanding Before Painting

    ≈ 15 min

Lightly sand entire assembly with #240 sandpaper and remove dust with a damp cloth. Smooth edges around screw heads and end grain. Outdoor-grade wood preservatives like Xyladecor or Osmo Color are suitable.

    Sand
    #240
    SandSTEP 9 / 13

    Tip

    • Cedar absorbs paint heavily; plan for two coats.
    • Apply more preservative on end grain as cut surfaces have exposed fibers absorbing easily.
    • Apply Xyladecor by rubbing in evenly with a cloth rather than brush for uniform finish.

    Watch out

    • Rough sanding before painting causes paint unevenness and raised fibers.
    • If dust remains before painting, surface will be rough.
  10. 10

    First Coat of Paint

    ≈ 30 min

Apply Xyladecor or water-based paint over the entire surface with a brush or cloth along the grain in one direction. Let it penetrate for 15–20 minutes, then remove excess with a dry cloth. Paint ventilation slits diagonally to avoid coverage gaps. Allow at least 2 hours of natural drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 10 / 13

    Tip

    • Xyladecor's 'apply and wipe' method enhances wood texture.
    • Paint pooling in ventilation slits delays drying; wipe thoroughly.
    • For outdoor work, ensure good ventilation and open windows to reduce vapor smell.

    Watch out

    • Failing to wipe excess causes sticky residue for several days.
    • Thick coats cause uneven drying and peeling later; thin two coats are essential.
  11. 11

    Intermediate Sanding and Second Coat

    ≈ 25 min

Once first coat is dry, lightly sand with #320 sandpaper (intermediate sanding). Remove dust, then apply the second coat thinner than first, wiping off excess similarly. Allow 24 hours for full curing.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 11 / 13

    Tip

    • Intermediate sanding smooths only raised paint fibers without removing paint film.
    • Two coats greatly enhance wood preservation; do not omit second coat.
    • Place painted item in dust-free area during drying.

    Watch out

    • Excessive intermediate sanding may remove first coat.
    • Omitting second coat halves preservative effect, especially important outdoors.
  12. 12

    Feet Pads and Waterproofing

    ≈ 15 min

Attach felt pads or anti-slip rubber pads to foot bottoms (lower ends of corner posts). If placing directly on ground, raise 10cm using bricks or blocks. For tile floors, silicone pads prevent slipping.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    InstallSTEP 12 / 13

    Tip

    • Felt pads absorb water and get dirty; rubber or silicone pads recommended for outdoor use.
    • Pads are essential on all four corner posts; omitting center pads causes tilting.
    • After installation, observe for one week; continue ventilation until paint vapors dissipate.

    Watch out

    • Without pads, floor can be scratched and slippery when wet.
    • Some silicone pads have weak adhesive; use heavy-duty double-sided tape for security.
  13. 13

    Final Inspection and Storing Shoes

    ≈ 15 min

Verify all screws are tight, ventilation slits uniform, and painting is even. Check for wobbling with a level; adjust pad thickness if needed. Avoid placing heavy objects for a full week until paint fully cures. Store shoes only when dry.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 13 / 13

    Tip

    • Wipe wet shoes before storing to prevent moisture buildup.
    • Fill storage up to 80% capacity; overfilling restricts ventilation.
    • Monthly airing out (remove all items and use fan to dry) extends lifespan.

    Watch out

    • Storing wet shoes before paint curing leaves shoe-shaped marks on paint film.
    • Overloading and forcing in shoes deforms boards.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Applying wood preservative is essential for outdoor use (reapplication recommended annually).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
