Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Gather two side boards of SPF lumber 1×10 (19×400×600mm), six shelf boards (19×400×600mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (600×600mm), sixteen 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L brackets. Tools needed include electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpapers, level, two F clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 600 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Inspect each board visually when purchasing and choose those with warping within 1mm.
    • L brackets and screws are the lifeline for fall prevention. Do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warping, cracking, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped more than 1mm causes warped shelf boards.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and easily bends during handling. After cutting, store it upright immediately.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a work area where the 600mm-high bookshelf can stand. Ceiling height should be 2200mm or more, floor space about 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Spread a blue sheet and use two saw horses to support the long materials.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble lying on the floor; stand the bookshelf up only at the final stage. This allows working even in narrow rooms.

    Watch out

    • It is difficult for one person to stand the finished bookshelf up. Two people are safer.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing it up. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Making the Cut List and Ordering Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list for two side boards at 600mm, six shelf boards at 600mm, and one back panel at 600×600mm to the home center for cutting. If cutting yourself, support the 600mm-long materials on two saw horses and cut by pulling the saw. Aim for a cutting accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting cost is about 30-50 yen per cut. Ordering all cuts costs around 1000 yen and shortens cutting time from 30 minutes to instant.
    • Cut the six identical shelf boards bundled together at once for best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber 19mm thick warps easily even when cutting straight. Use guides to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood is flexible and will warp if not supported underneath when cutting.
  4. 4

    Sanding all Materials (#120 → #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all materials starting with #120 grit then #240. Pay special attention to sanding the shelf-supporting surface of the side boards, the top and bottom surfaces of the shelf boards, and the cut edges (ends). Round the shelf edges for better handling. After sanding, completely remove wood dust with a vacuum.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Make shelf board surfaces smooth for easy book handling.
    • Cut edges tend to raise fibers, so sand these particularly well, starting with #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF is soft; avoid over-sanding as it can alter dimensions. Use mostly #120 grit and finish with #240 only.
    • Rounding corners too much can appear clumsy. Round to about R2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side boards side by side and pencil-mark the positions to fix six shelves. Shelf spacing can be uniformly 300mm from bottom to top (total 1800mm for 6 shelves) or designed with wider spacing for displays near the top. Align both side boards perfectly and mark simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions match exactly on both sides.
    • Use common book heights as a guide: A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), bunko size (150mm) to set shelf spacing for easy storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions on left and right boards are misaligned, shelves will be skewed. Simultaneous marking with boards clamped is essential.
    • Do not forget the 19mm thickness of shelf boards when calculating spacing; otherwise, the actual spacing will be narrower.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at the marked positions. Drill from the outside of the side board into the shelf board end grain. Use masking tape on the drill bit to mark depth. Drill through the side board (19mm) plus 10mm into the shelf board end (total 29mm).

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole diameter is about 70% of the 4.2mm screw shaft diameter for 38mm coarse-thread screws, effectively preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf board needs two pilot holes on each side board (6 shelves x 4 holes = 24 holes). Check carefully that none are missed.

    Watch out

    • If pilot hole depth is insufficient, screws won't fully seat; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling completely through the shelf board end; use tape depth stop on drill bit.
  7. 7

Temporary Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor and stand the six shelf boards upright at the marked positions. Temporarily clamp each shelf board with F-clamps and check with a carpenter's square that each shelf is perpendicular to the side board. At spots where the square cannot fit, check visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble shelves from bottom to top for better stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board is needed; having 6 is ideal. If unavailable, use 2 clamps and proceed stepwise.

    Watch out

    • If fixed with skewed right angles, the entire bookshelf will become a parallelogram. Always check with a carpenter's square.
    • If shelf boards protrude beyond the side board edges, the back panel cannot be properly attached later.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Screw the 38mm coarse-thread screws through the pilot holes from the outside of the side board into the shelf ends. Use two screws per connection point, for 6 shelves totaling 12 screws. Screw heads should be flush with or slightly recessed (0.5mm) into the side board. Use medium torque on the impact driver and finish tightening by hand with a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offsetting the two screws slightly up and down improves withdrawal strength.
    • If screw head holes are visible afterward, you may fill them later with wood dowels (optional).

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws can split 19mm-thick SPF lumber at end grain; stop at medium torque.
    • If screws go in crooked and protrude on the shelf board side, remove and fill holes with wood filler and re-screw elsewhere.
  9. 9

Preparing the Opposite Side Board Attachment

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the side board with shelves fixed and position the other side board on the opposite side, aligning the ends of the shelf boards with the pencil line on it. Temporarily clamp in place. Check for vertical alignment and right angles with the bookshelf standing.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person work is recommended: one to hold, another to clamp, for better precision.
    • The markings on the opposite side board were made during the initial marking step and should not be re-marked.

    Watch out

    • Working alone can cause shelf boards to fall and topple. Always work with two people or lean the structure against a wall for support.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

From the outside, screw through the pilot holes on the opposite side board into shelf ends with 38mm coarse-thread screws. Two screws per point, 6 shelves, total 12 screws. This completes the fixation of both side boards and six shelves, forming the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After both side boards are fixed, check the level of all shelves. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust before retightening.

    Watch out

    • Do not screw both sides simultaneously as it causes distortion; complete one side first, then the other.
  11. 11

    Overall Level and Diagonal Check

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor and check shelf levels with a level. Measure diagonal distances (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) with a tape measure; the difference must be within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust, and add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • A diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape. Correct before attaching the back panel.
    • The back panel adds rigidity; fix distortion prior to its installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging (middle dip) worsens under book weight; for shelves up to 600mm length this is acceptable, but for over 1000mm consider reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Back Panel Attachment Preparation

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back panel (600×600mm) against the back of the bookshelf. Align all four corners, confirm diagonal measurements match the bookshelf (the back panel corrects distortion). Once positioned, lightly fix the back panel to the bookshelf using masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • The back panel is an important structural member that suppresses distortion. Attaching it crookedly reduces rigidity.
    • Use a stapler for easy fastening of 4mm plywood. If using nails, drill pilot holes first.

    Watch out

    • If the back panel is larger than the bookshelf, trim the excess. If smaller, maintain an even gap within 5mm around the edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling the Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Fasten the back panel to the side boards and shelf boards with 15mm staples from a stapler or with small nails. Space fasteners every 100-150mm, covering all edges and shelf board locations. Start stapling at the corners, then along diagonals sequentially to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • A stapler costs about 1500-2500 yen at home centers and is faster than nails. Worth the investment for bookshelf building.
    • Mark shelf positions on the back panel in pencil beforehand to avoid missing fixing points on shelf boards.

    Watch out

    • Staples longer than 15mm may protrude inside and damage books; 15mm staples are suitable for 19mm-thick boards.
    • Fasten at shelf board edges as well as all four edges of the back panel; otherwise the panel may lift if sag occurs.
  14. 14

    Preparing for L Bracket Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L brackets to the top rear corners of the bookshelf: two on each side. One side attaches to the bookshelf upper edge, the other will mount to the wall. Use a stud finder on the wall to locate studs in advance.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Inexpensive stud finders at 100 yen shops are not accurate; recommend home center models costing 1000-2000 yen.
    • Studs are usually spaced about 455mm apart; once you find one, approximate locations of adjacent studs are easier to find.

    Watch out

    • If the wall is only drywall, screws won't secure properly, so the fall prevention is ineffective. Always screw into studs.
    • If L bracket positions do not align with studs, shift bracket left or right to center screws on studs.
  15. 15

Installing L Brackets on Bookshelf Side

    ≈ 10 min

Attach the four L brackets to the outside of the bookshelf's upper side boards with 38mm coarse-thread screws through the pre-drilled screw holes. Position brackets flush or up to 5mm raised, ensuring the bracket extends perpendicularly from the wall side.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Make sure the bracket's bent side faces the wall and the screw holes face the bookshelf side when installing.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are installed crookedly, gaps will appear between bracket and wall when mounting, reducing effectiveness. Check with a level.
  16. 16

Setting the Bookshelf and Wall Fixing

    ≈ 20 min

With two people, stand and move the bookshelf to the installation location. Press the bookshelf firmly against the wall and screw through the wall side holes of the L brackets into the studs using 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (included or separate). Secure all four points to complete fall prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for wall fixing; use 45-50mm screws to reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step; do not shortcut because falling during earthquakes can cause injury or fatality.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone are not strong enough; screws must go into studs.
    • If there is more than a 5mm gap between bookshelf and wall, insert shims before fixing; leaving gaps weakens bracket effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Thoroughly vacuum and wipe the entire bookshelf with a dry cloth to remove wood dust, grease, and fingerprints. Clean preparation greatly affects paint finish quality. The plywood back panel absorbs paint quickly; masking it beforehand is an option.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wipe in three steps: dry wipe → wet wipe → dry wipe for perfect cleanliness.

    Watch out

    • Remaining dust causes a rough paint surface. Check carefully under lighting.
  18. 18

    First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Kiyoshidecor or Kinura) with a brush over the entire bookshelf. Follow order: outer side of side boards → shelf board top surfaces → shelf board undersides → back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. The first coat uses about 60-70% of the total stain amount because absorption is high.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • The procedure is: apply stain → wait 10-15 min → wipe off. Not wiping leaves a sticky surface.
    • A 30-50mm wide brush is optimal for bookshelf work; bigger brushes miss details.

    Watch out

    • Skipping the wipe leaves stickiness for over a week. Always wipe off.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs fast and may cause unevenness; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After the first coat dries for 24 hours, apply the second coat using about 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of the first coat. Wipe off excess again. Two coats deepen color and improve preservative effects. Complete drying takes 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • The second coat corrects uneven coloring from the first. Apply an even, thin coat.
    • Add a third coat if a darker color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not skip wiping after the second coat; thick application causes unevenness.
    • Keep the drying bookshelf protected from dust and insects, preferably outdoors.
  20. 20

    Completion, Usage Start, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After the oil has fully dried (48 hours), arrange books and begin use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for balance and stability. Inspect screw tightness and L bracket fixation after one week and retighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) on the bottom two shelves; use lighter books such as paperbacks and hardcovers on top.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore shine and protective effects.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing risks transferring oil to them. Always wait 48 hours or longer to dry.
    • Bookshelves absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers in rainy seasons. Moisture causes warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Apply wood preservative when using outdoors (recommended to reapply annually).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
