Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 2 side boards made of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×400×1500mm), 6 shelf boards (19×400×900mm), 1 plywood back panel 4mm thick (900×1500mm), 40 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-brackets 50mm. Tools needed are electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush, paint tray, and a stapler or fine nails.

    Measure
    W 900 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each board's warp visually before purchase; select boards with warp less than 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are the 'lifeline' for tipping prevention. Do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber board for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards with warp over 1mm causes shelf distortion.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and easily broken during movement. After cutting, store it standing immediately.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where the 1500mm high bookshelf can be assembled standing up. Ceiling height should be 2200mm or more, with a floor area of about 1500×1200mm for ample space. Lay a blue sheet and use two sawhorses to support long boards.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor; raising upright is the final step. Work can be done even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf alone is difficult. Two people are safer for this step.
    • If ceiling height is under 2000mm, the bookshelf will hit the ceiling when raised. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Cut Request

    ≈ 20 min

Submit the cut list for 2 side boards (1500mm), 6 shelf boards (900mm), and 1 back panel (900×1500mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support the 1500mm boards on two sawhorses and cut by pulling the saw. Aim for a cut tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting charges are 30-50 yen per cut. Requesting all cuts costs around 1000 yen but shortens time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Since the 6 shelf boards are the same size, bundling and cutting them at once yields best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • Even straight cuts on 19mm thick SPF lumber tend to warp; use guides to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and bends during cutting unless supported underneath, causing distortion.
  4. 4

    Sanding All Parts (#120 → #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts starting with #120 grit, finishing with #240. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces on side boards, both sides of shelf boards, and edges (end grain). Rounding shelf edges makes handling easier. After sanding, thoroughly vacuum all sawdust.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • A smooth shelf surface makes book placement smoother.
    • Edges (cut surfaces) have raised fibers and require extra care, always starting with #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding changes dimensions. Use #120 grit mainly, and #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding corners looks clumsy. Limit radius to approx. 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the 2 side boards together and mark with pencil the fixed positions of the 6 shelf boards. Shelf spacing is usually 300mm each from bottom up (total 1800mm for 6 layers), or wider on top for decoration per design. Ensure both side boards are aligned exactly before marking simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions match perfectly.
    • Use reference heights such as A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and paperback (150mm) to decide shelf spacing for easy storage.

    Watch out

    • Mismatched shelf positions cause shelves to be installed at an angle; always clamp for simultaneous marking.
    • Forgetting shelf board thickness (19mm) in calculations results in narrower actual spacing.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside of the side board towards the shelf board end grain. Set a tape depth indicator so drilling passes through side board thickness (19mm) and into the shelf board 10mm deep (total 29mm).

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • A 3mm pilot hole is about 70% of the 4.2mm screw shaft diameter, effectively preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf board requires 2 pilot holes per side board (left and right), totaling 24 holes for 6 shelves — check carefully to avoid omissions.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from fully entering; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Drill depth should not exceed shelf board thickness to avoid breaking through the opposite side; use tape as stop.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board on the floor, stand the 6 shelf boards at marked positions. Temporarily fix with F-type clamps, and check that side board and shelf boards form perfect right angles with a carpenter's square. For areas where square cannot fit, verify by eye.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Start installing shelf boards from the bottom up for stability.
    • Each shelf board ideally needs one clamp; having six clamps makes work easier but two clamps used sequentially are sufficient.

    Watch out

    • Fixing at wrong angle causes the whole structure to become a parallelogram shape; always confirm with square.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond the edge of the side board prevent back panel installation later.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread screws 38mm through pilot holes from the side board exterior into shelf board end grain. Use two screws per shelf position, total 12 for 6 shelves. Screw heads should be flush or recessed up to 0.5mm into the side board. Use medium torque on impact driver and finish last tightening by hand about a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset the two screws slightly vertically to increase withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are visible, optionally fill with wooden plugs later to hide.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws in 19mm SPF lumber end grain causes splitting; stop at medium torque.
    • If screws go in at an angle and protrude from opposite side, remove, fill with wood putty, and re-screw elsewhere.
  9. 9

Preparing Installation of Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

With shelf boards fixed on one side standing upright, position the other side board on the opposite shelf ends aligning with markings. Temporarily clamp. Confirm right angles with the structure standing upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person work is recommended: one holding and another clamping ensures precision.
    • The opposite side board's positions were marked initially; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting alone risks shelf boards falling to the floor; always work with two people or lean against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive screws from outside the opposite side board through pilot holes into shelf boards: 2 screws per shelf, 12 screws total. This fixes both side boards and 6 shelf boards, completing the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, use a level to confirm all shelves are horizontal. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.
    • Do screws on one side completely before starting opposite side to avoid distortion.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously causes warping; complete one side fully first.
  11. 11

Checking Overall Level and Diagonal Measurement

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor. Use a level to check the horizontality of each shelf. Measure diagonal distances from top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left; confirm difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust, and add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape; correct before attaching back panel.
    • Back panel increases rigidity; fix distortion before attaching it.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging (center sag) worsens under book weight. Shelf length 600mm is acceptable; over 1000mm requires reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back panel (900×1500mm) on the bookshelf’s back. Align corners and confirm diagonal measurements match the main frame; this helps final distortion correction. Temporarily fix back panel with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is key to preventing distortion. Slightly slanted installation lowers rigidity.
    • Use a stapler for easy fixing; if using fine nails, pre-drill pilot holes.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than bookshelf, trim excess; if smaller, keep uniform 5mm gap on edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Fasten back panel to side boards and shelf boards with a stapler (approx. 15mm staples) or fine nails every 100-150mm around edges and shelf positions. Start from corners and staple along diagonals sequentially to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers cost around 1500-2500 yen at hardware stores, faster than nails; worth investing for this project.
    • Mark shelf positions on back panel with pencil before stapling to avoid missing shelves.

    Watch out

    • Staple points protruding inside may scratch books; 15mm staples are appropriate for 19mm thickness.
    • Staple all four edges and shelf lines; incomplete fixing causes back panel to warp.
  14. 14

    Preparing to Install L-Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 4 L-brackets (50mm), to be installed at top rear left and right sides of bookshelf (2 each). One side attached to bookshelf top edge, the other to wall stud. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs in advance.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud finders from 100 yen shops have low accuracy; hardware store models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Wall studs are typically spaced 455mm apart; finding one helps estimate neighboring positions.

    Watch out

    • If wall is only drywall, screws won't hold and cannot prevent tipping; always fix into studs.
    • If bracket position doesn't align with stud, shift the bracket horizontally so screws hit center of stud.
  15. 15

    Installing L-Brackets on Bookshelf Side

    ≈ 10 min

Attach the 4 L-brackets to the bookshelf’s top side edges using 38mm coarse-thread screws in the bracket’s screw holes. Fix brackets flush with or within 5mm of side board surface, projecting perpendicularly toward the wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Make sure bracket bend faces the wall side and screw holes face the bookshelf side.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned brackets cause gaps between bracket and wall during fixing; check with level.
  16. 16

    Installing Bookshelf and Wall Fixing

    ≈ 20 min

Move bookshelf to installation location (2 people recommended). Position close to wall. Use 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (supplied or separately) through wall-side holes of L-brackets into wall studs. Fix all 4 points to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for wall; use 45-50mm screws to reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is the most important step to prevent injury or suffocation from earthquakes—do not skip or weaken.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack strength; always screw into studs.
    • Gaps over 5mm between wall and bookshelf require shimming before fixing; loose brackets do not work.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Clean the entire bookshelf with a vacuum and dry cloth to remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints completely. Cleaning quality strongly affects finish. For plywood back panel which absorbs paint quickly, pre-masking is optional.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Perform 3-step wiping before painting: dry wipe → wet wipe → dry wipe for perfect cleanliness.

    Watch out

    • Leftover dust causes rough paint surfaces; check with lighting.
  18. 18

Applying First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (such as Xyladecor, Kinura) with a brush to all surfaces in order: side board exterior → shelf board top → shelf board underside → back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. First coat uses 60-70% of total amount due to high absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application requires: apply → wait 10-15 min → wipe off; skipping wipe leaves sticky residue.
    • Brush width 30-50mm is optimal for bookshelf work; too wide misses detail.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe leaves stickiness for more than a week; always wipe.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs unevenly; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying of first coat, apply second coat using 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of the first. Also wipe off excess. Two coats deepen color and improve wood preservation. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects color unevenness from first. Apply thinly and evenly.
    • For darker color, a third coat can be applied.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget to wipe off after second coat; thick application causes unevenness.
    • During drying, keep outdoors free of dust and insects.
  20. 20

    Completion, Usage Start, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full drying (48 hours), place books and start using. Arrange heavy books on lower shelves, lighter on upper shelves for stability. After one week of use, check and retighten screws and L-brackets if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on bottom two shelves.
    • Reapply oil stain every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing may transfer oil stain to books; wait at least 48 hours.
    • Books absorb moisture; place dehumidifiers during rainy season as moisture can warp bookshelf.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Wood preservative treatment is mandatory for outdoor use (reapplication recommended once a year).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
