Final check of parts and tools
≈ 15 minPrepare two 2x6 lumber pieces (38×140×1500mm), four 2x4 lumber legs (38×89×412mm), two 2x4 lumber aprons (38×89×1500mm), and forty 65mm coarse-thread screws. Tools include electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush, and paint tray. Stainless steel screws are recommended for outdoor installation.
MeasureW 1500 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 19Tip
- Prepare 50 screws (1.25 times the specified quantity) as extras for mistakes.
- For outdoor use, choose stainless steel coarse-thread screws. Iron screws rust within one year.
Watch out
- 2x4 and 2x6 have the same thickness of 38mm but different widths (89mm and 140mm). Confirm at checkout.
- 1500mm long lumber requires a minivan or larger vehicle for transport; cannot fit in a kei car.
- 2
Securing the workspace
≈ 10 minSecure a flat surface about 1800mm by 1500mm and lay a blue tarp. Place two saw horses side by side or use a sufficiently long workbench to support the 1500mm long lumber horizontally. If working outdoors, choose a day with little wind.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 2 / 19Tip
- The garden bench is intended for outdoor placement. Assembling outdoors reduces transportation effort.
Watch out
- If the workbench is shorter than 1500mm, the lumber will sag and accuracy will suffer. Use two saw horses to support both ends.
- 3
Marking lumber
≈ 15 minUse a carpenter's square and 2B pencil to mark all cut lines and pilot hole positions. Mark two top boards (1500mm), four legs (412mm), and two aprons (1500mm). Label the back side of each part with 'Top Board A/B', 'Leg LF/LB/RF/RB', and 'Apron Front/Back' to reduce confusion during assembly.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 3 / 19Tip
- Clamp the four legs together and mark lines once to ensure consistent lengths.
Watch out
- The carpenter's square has a 3mm difference between inside and outside measurements. Standardize all markings on the outside (scale side).
- 4
Cutting long lumber
≈ 25 minCut two 2x6 boards to 1500mm, two 2x4 aprons to 1500mm, and four legs to 412mm. Using the home center's cutting service offers better accuracy and saves time. If cutting yourself, use a pull saw and cut 0.5mm outside the marked line on the waste side.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 4 / 19Tip
- Cutting 1500mm lumber yourself is physically demanding. Home center cutting (30-50 yen per cut) is recommended.
- Clamp all four legs together and cut simultaneously for uniform length.
Watch out
- Support the lumber ends with saw horses; unsupported ends result in chipping.
- If even one leg is shorter, the bench will wobble. Make sure all four legs match length.
- 5
Sanding (#120 then #240)
≈ 30 minSand all parts first with #120 grit then with #240 grit sandpaper. Sand the top surface (seat) thoroughly and spend extra time on the end grain where fibers raise. After sanding, remove wood dust with a vacuum cleaner.
Sand#120SandSTEP 5 / 19Tip
- Wrap sandpaper around a wood block for more uniform sanding than by hand.
- Sand along the wood grain; sanding against it leaves roughness.
Watch out
- Do not round edges excessively; keep it subtle to maintain appearance.
- Starting directly with #240 grit without #120 first won't remove roughness effectively. Always follow the order.
- 6
Preparing pilot holes
≈ 15 minDrill φ3mm pilot holes at two positions on each leg-to-apron joint and four positions on each top board-to-apron joint. Use masking tape on the drill bit to mark depth and avoid drilling through.
Drill a holeφ3mmDrillSTEP 6 / 19Tip
- Φ3mm pilot holes are about 70% of the 4.2mm wide coarse-thread screw shaft diameter, optimal for preventing wood splitting.
Watch out
- Without pilot holes, cedar and SPF lumbers will split 100%. Especially critical near the end grain.
- 7
Temporary assembly of one side leg frame
≈ 15 minAssemble a U-shaped frame using two legs (412mm) and one apron (1500mm), and temporarily fix with F-clamps. Position the apron at seat height (450mm) minus top board thickness (38mm). Verify right angles with a carpenter’s square.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 7 / 19Tip
- Once position is set in temporary assembly, mark the joint with pencil to avoid confusion during final assembly.
Watch out
- If fixed with incorrect right angles, the frame becomes a diamond shape. Always verify with a carpenter's square.
- 8
Screwing one side leg frame
≈ 10 minSecure the apron to the legs using 65mm coarse-thread screws. Drive two screws per joint, staggered vertically. Countersink screw heads flush or about 0.5mm below surface.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 8 / 19Tip
- Driving the two screws slightly diverging in a reverse V pattern enhances pull-out strength.
Watch out
- If screws are driven at an angle, remove, fill with wood filler, and re-screw at a different spot.
- 9
Assembling opposite leg frame
≈ 20 minBuild the second frame using the first as a template, ensuring identical dimensions. Place both frames side by side to check apron position and leg length before securing.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 9 / 19Tip
- Use the first frame as a template; overlay the second onto it to improve accuracy.
Watch out
- If left and right frames are asymmetrical, the top boards will be skewed. Confirm alignment by placing frames side by side.
- 10
Connecting left and right frames
≈ 15 minStand two frames parallel 400mm apart (bench depth) and place the second apron (1500mm) across between legs. Temporarily clamp them. Measure and compare both diagonals; difference must be within 5mm before screwing.
MeasureW 1500 mmMeasureSTEP 10 / 19Tip
- Measuring diagonals is fundamental for any box assembly. Always measure both diagonals.
Watch out
- A diagonal difference exceeding 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape. Loosen clamps and readjust.
- Do not drive screws on both sides simultaneously as it causes distortion. Complete one side fully then the other.
- 11
Leveling leg frames
≈ 10 minPlace the assembled leg frame on the floor and check horizontality on all four sides with a level. If wobbling occurs, carefully shave longer legs by 1mm increments until even.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 11 / 19Tip
- Floor may be uneven; test leveling on multiple surfaces.
Watch out
- Shaving too much shortens legs excessively. Always shave 1mm then recheck.
- 12
Positioning top boards
≈ 10 minPlace two 1500mm top boards on the frame with a 5mm spacer (a coin can be used) between them for a gap. Ensure overhang at front and back is equal on both ends.
Lay the top board5mm 間隔Top boardSTEP 12 / 19Tip
- A 500-yen coin is approximately 2mm thick; stack 2.5 coins to make a 5mm spacer.
Watch out
- Boards placed tightly together trap rainwater and cause corrosion. Leave at least 5mm gap for outdoor use.
- 13
Securing top boards
≈ 15 minDrill φ3mm pilot holes at the apron-to-top board joints and screw with 65mm coarse-thread screws: four per board (two each on front and back aprons), totaling eight screws. Countersink screw heads flush or up to 0.5mm below surface.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 13 / 19Tip
- Avoid screwing in the center of the top board to prevent snagging clothes; limit screws to apron line.
Watch out
- Screw heads protruding may cause skin abrasions. If overdriven, remove and re-screw elsewhere.
- Do not place screws less than 20mm from board edges to avoid splitting.
- 14
Rechecking overall level and distortion
≈ 10 minAfter securing top boards, use a level to check horizontal alignment and inspect for creaks or wobble. Sit on the bench to test; if unstable, tighten or add screws at joints.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 14 / 19Tip
- Distortion may be noticeable only under weight. Always perform seated test.
Watch out
- Creaking sounds indicate loose joints; do not ignore and tighten screws promptly.
- 15
Cleaning before finishing
≈ 10 minVacuum all wood dust and clean the entire bench with a damp, well-wrung cloth to remove dust and oils. If screw head countersinks are noticeable, fill with wood filler and smooth with #240 sandpaper.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 15 / 19Tip
- Proper cleaning before finishing determines about 80% of the final finish quality. Thoroughly clean.
Watch out
- Applying finish over residual dust causes a bumpy surface. Use vacuum plus cloth to fully remove dust.
- 16
First coat of wood preservative
≈ 30 minApply outdoor wood preservative (e.g., Xyladecor) evenly over all surfaces with a 50mm brush. Use a thin coat to let it soak in along the grain. Dry in shade or low wind area.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 16 / 19Tip
- A 50mm brush is convenient for bench size.
Watch out
- Direct sunlight causes surface to dry too quickly and leaves the inside semi-wet. Dry in shade.
- 17
Second coat of wood preservative
≈ 30 minAfter 24 hours drying from first coat, apply the second coat. Two coats are necessary for effective wood preservation. Apply carefully, especially on the seat. Do not disturb until completely dry (additional 24 hours).
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 17 / 19Tip
- Apply second coat uniformly but avoid thick application, aiming to 'cover' thoroughly.
Watch out
- If it rains before drying, the coating will run off. Check weather forecast before painting.
- 18
Installation and final leveling
≈ 15 minAfter the preservative is completely dry (48 hours), place bench at installation site. When placing on grass or soil, raise legs on bricks or blocks to reduce rot risk. Use a level for final check and adjust any wobble with leg pads.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 18 / 19Tip
- Direct contact with grass keeps legs moist; raising them on blocks is standard outdoor DIY practice.
Watch out
- Sitting immediately after finishing may stain clothing. Wait at least 48 hours for complete drying.
- 19
Completion and maintenance record
≈ 10 minPerform a final visual inspection of the completed garden bench. For outdoor use, sand lightly with #240 grit and reapply the same preservative annually to extend lifespan beyond 10 years. Record maintenance date and preservative used with pencil on the leg undersides.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 19 / 19Tip
- Maintaining a record simplifies future maintenance; note date, product, and areas treated.
Watch out
- Neglecting maintenance for 2-3 years leads to paint peeling and start of corrosion. Annual reapplication is key to longevity.
Warnings
- ⚠️For outdoor use, applying wood preservative is essential (reapplication recommended annually).
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
