Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×600×1800mm), six shelf boards (19×600×600mm), one veneer back panel (4mm thick, 600×1800mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and four 50mm L-shaped brackets. Tools include electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush with paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 600 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each piece visually when purchasing and select pieces with warping within 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are critical for tipping prevention. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber piece for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using lumber warped over 1mm will distort the shelves.
    • The 4mm veneer back panel is thin and easily broken during handling. Store upright immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Prepare a workspace tall enough to stand the 1800mm bookshelf upright. A ceiling height over 2200mm and floor space about 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay down a blue tarp and support long materials on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble the bookshelf lying on the floor, then stand it up at the final step. This allows assembly even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Standing up the assembled bookshelf is difficult alone. Working with two people is safer.
    • If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, the top will hit the ceiling when standing it up. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Ordering Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list for two side boards (1800mm), six shelf boards (600mm), and one back panel (600×1800mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support the 1800mm boards on two sawhorses and cut by pulling the saw. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting service costs 30-50 yen per cut. Total cost about 1000 yen and saves 30 minutes compared to cutting yourself.
    • Since all six shelf boards share the same dimensions, bundling them and cutting simultaneously yields higher accuracy.

    Watch out

    • Even straight cuts of 19mm SPF lumber easily warp. Use a guide for a straight cut.
    • 4mm veneer is soft and distorts if unsupported at the back during cutting.
  4. 4

    Sanding All Parts (#120→#240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts first with #120 then #240 sandpaper. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces on side boards, top and bottom surfaces of shelf boards, and end grain. Rounding the shelf edge enhances handling. Vacuum thoroughly after sanding to remove all dust.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Sanding shelf surfaces to smoothness facilitates easy handling of books.
    • End grain cuts have raised fibers; start sanding with #120 for these areas.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding distorts dimensions. Use #120 for general sanding and #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding corners results in a bulky appearance. Keep radius near 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards side by side and mark with a pencil six shelf positions for the shelf boards. Shelf spacing can be 300mm for six intervals starting from the bottom (using the full 1800mm) or adjusted with wider spacing near the top for decorations. Mark both side boards simultaneously aligned to ensure positions match.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking to guarantee shelf positions align perfectly on both sides.
    • Use standard book heights such as A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and Paperback (150mm) to determine practical shelf spacing.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned shelf markings cause tilted shelf boards. Mark simultaneously while clamped.
    • Forgetfulness of shelf board thickness (19mm) in spacing calculations results in narrower than intended spaces.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at the marked positions. Drill from the outer side of the side boards through to the shelf board edge, so the holes go through the 19mm side board and 10mm into the shelf board for a total depth of about 29mm. Use masking tape on the drill bit to mark the depth.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole corresponds to 70% of the 38mm coarse-thread screw shaft diameter (4.2mm), effectively preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf board requires two pilot holes on each side board, totaling 24 holes for six shelves and both sides. Carefully check no holes are missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth will prevent screws from fully seating. Dig slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling through the shelf board to the other side by using tape depth stop on the bit.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fix Shelf Board to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay the first side board flat and stand six shelf boards vertically at the marked positions. Temporarily fix with F-clamps. Verify shelf boards and side board form right angles using the carpenter's square. If the square cannot fit fully, confirm visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Start from the bottom shelf and proceed upward to maintain stability.
    • Ideally, use one clamp per shelf board (six total). If only two clamps are available, proceed sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing at an incorrect right angle will skew the assembly into a parallelogram. Always check with the carpenter's square.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond the side board edges prevent proper installation of the back panel later.
  8. 8

    Screw Fixing One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive two coarse-thread 38mm screws through the pilot holes from the outside of the side board into each shelf board (2 screws per location). Apply 12 screws total for six shelves. Countersink or recess screw heads flush or 0.5mm below the side board surface. Use medium torque on the impact driver and finish tightening by hand turning a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slightly offsetting the two screws vertically improves withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are visible, optionally fill with wooden plugs later for aesthetic.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening can split the 19mm thick SPF lumber end grain. Use medium torque to avoid damage.
    • If a screw is driven in at an angle and protrudes on the other side, remove it, fill hole with wood filler, and drive a new screw in a different position.
  9. 9

Preparation for Fixing Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly fixed on one side vertically. Position the second side board on the opposite side, aligning the shelf boards' ends with the marked lines on the side board. Temporarily clamp and verify right angles with the assembly upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Recommend two people for this step: one to hold the assembly and one to clamp for better accuracy.
    • The opposite side board was marked earlier. Do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this alone risks shelf boards falling out and damaging floors. Always work with two people or lean the assembly against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screw Fixing the Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the second side board into the shelf boards (two screws per position, 12 screws total). This completes fixation of both side boards and all shelf boards, forming the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, check each shelf board’s level with a level. If any shelf tilts, loosen screws, adjust, then re-tighten.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously causes distortion. Fix one side fully before starting the other.
  11. 11

    Overall Level and Diagonal Check

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor. Use a level to check each shelf board's horizontality. Measure diagonals from top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left with a tape measure to ensure the difference is within 5mm. If warped, loosen clamps to adjust and add screws to secure.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • A diagonal difference exceeding 5mm indicates a parallelogram distortion. Correct before attaching the back panel.
    • The back panel increases rigidity. Fix all distortions before back panel attachment.

    Watch out

    • Shelf board sagging under heavy books worsens warp. Shelf length of 600mm is acceptable; longer shelves may require reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Preparing for Back Panel Attachment

    ≈ 10 min

Fit the 4mm veneer back panel onto the bookshelf back. Align corners and verify diagonals match the bookshelf to correct any residual distortion. Temporarily tape the back panel to the bookshelf with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • The back panel is vital for preventing distortion. Installing it slightly skewed reduces rigidity.
    • The 4mm veneer can be easily stapled. For small nails, drill pilot holes first.

    Watch out

    • If the back panel is larger than the bookshelf, trim the excess edges. If smaller, maintain even gaps no larger than 5mm around the edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling the Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Staple or use small nails to attach the back panel onto side boards and shelf boards approximately every 100-150mm, including all edges and shelf board lines. Start from the corners and work along diagonals to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers cost about 1500-2500 yen at home centers and are faster than nails; a worthwhile investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf board positions on the back panel with pencil before fastening to avoid missed spots.

    Watch out

    • Staples sticking through inside the bookshelf will damage books. Using 15mm staples suits 19mm thick lumber.
    • Nailing only the four edges of the back panel and not the areas over shelves causes the panel to bulge when shelves sag.
  14. 14

    Preparing to Install L-shaped Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare four 50mm L-shaped brackets: two for each side of the upper back corners. One side attaches to the bookshelf top edges, the other to the wall. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • 100-yen store stud finders lack accuracy. Using home center models costing 1000-2000 yen is recommended.
    • Wall studs are usually spaced 455mm apart. Once one is found, estimating adjacent studs is easier.

    Watch out

    • If the wall is only drywall, screws will not hold firmly and cannot prevent tipping. Always secure into studs.
    • If L-bracket position does not align with studs, adjust bracket position horizontally to center screw holes on studs.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-shaped Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-shaped brackets to the outer top edges of the bookshelf side boards with 38mm coarse-thread screws into the provided holes. Fix brackets flush or within 5mm from the boards. Position brackets so the bent section faces the wall, extending perpendicular.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket orientation: bent side faces the wall; screw holes side attaches to bookshelf.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are installed crooked, gaps form between brackets and wall during fixing. Use a level to check alignment.
  16. 16

    Installing Bookshelf and Wall Mounting

    ≈ 20 min

With two people, move the bookshelf to its location and stand it upright. Position it tight against the wall and drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws through the wall side holes of L-brackets into wall studs using suitable screws (included or separate). Secure all four points to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for wall mounts; use 45-50mm screws that reach studs.
    • Wall-mounting is the most critical step; neglecting it risks injury or death in earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone do not provide sufficient strength. Always screw into studs.
    • If gap exceeds 5mm between wall and bookshelf, insert shims before fastening. Floating brackets do not function properly.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Finishing

    ≈ 10 min

Clean the entire bookshelf with a vacuum and dry cloth to completely remove sawdust, oil, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality greatly affects finishing result. Optionally, mask the veneer back panel to prevent excessive paint absorption.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Cleaning before finishing is most effective by dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe sequence.

    Watch out

    • Remaining sawdust causes rough painted surfaces. Inspect under lighting to confirm cleanliness.
  18. 18

    First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) with a brush covering all surfaces: side board outer sides, shelf board upper surfaces, shelf board undersides, then back panel in sequence. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total oil amount for the first coat due to absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application requires brushing, waiting 10-15 minutes, then wiping off excess. Failure to wipe leaves sticky residue.
    • Use 30-50 mm width brushes for detailed application; too large brushes miss narrow areas.

    Watch out

    • Not wiping off excess oil leaves tackiness for over a week; always wipe.
    • Veneer back panels absorb oil quickly causing uneven color; apply thin coat and wipe thoroughly.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After drying 24 hours, apply a second thinner coat using 30-50% of the first coat volume. Also wipe off excess. Two coats deepen color and increase protection. Allow 24-48 hours for complete drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects color unevenness, applying uniformly and thinly.
    • A third coat can be optional to achieve darker color.

    Watch out

    • Do not skip wiping on second coat; thick layers cause uneven finish.
    • During drying, keep indoors free from dust and insects to prevent contamination.
  20. 20

    Completion, Usage, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After complete drying of oil (48 hours), place books and begin use. Arrange heavy books on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for stability. After one week, recheck screws and L-bracket tightness, and retighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy volumes (encyclopedias etc.) on lower two shelves, with paperbacks and lighter books on upper shelves for balance.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore shine and protection.

    Watch out

    • Do not place books immediately after finishing; oil can transfer to books. Always let dry at least 48 hours.
    • Books absorb moisture, so use dehumidifiers during rainy seasons; bookshelf wood can warp from humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Make pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
