Build steps

  1. 1

    Measure and Confirm Installation Environment

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the installation location of the round dining table (900×900×720mm). Ensure there is at least 400mm space behind and in front of the chair when pulled out, and confirm the serving path for dishes.

    Measure
    W 900 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 12

    Tip

    • For a typical dining style, allocate approximately 600mm width × 400mm depth per person.
    • Table height of 720mm assumes a standard dining chair seat height (420mm) plus a 300mm clearance.
    • Maintain at least 800mm distance from the wall to allow chair pulling out.

    Watch out

    • A 1200×700mm top board is standard for 4 people but can be cramped for households with many large dishes.
    • Overlooking the chair backrest depth during measurement can result in a layout that impedes entry and exit.
  2. 2

Create Cut List and Order Lumber from Home Center

    ≈ 40 min

Prepare 7 boards of 2×6 lumber (38×140×900mm) for the top, 4 legs of 2×4 lumber (38×89×682mm), 2 long apron boards (38×89×824mm), and 2 short apron boards (38×89×824mm). Also prepare 60 pieces of 75mm coarse-thread screws. Using the home center paid cutting service is convenient.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 12

    Tip

    • 2×6 lumber actual size is 38×140mm; note the difference from nominal size.
    • 9 top boards side by side measure 140×9=1260mm. Adding 3mm gaps between boards totals 24mm, making 1284mm width.
    • The effective top board width is 9 boards ×140mm + 8 gaps ×3mm =1284mm, which exceeds 900mm; adjust number or width accordingly.

    Watch out

    • Selecting warped or twisted 2×6 lumber causes the top board to wave; visually inspect each board at purchase.
    • Leg length 682mm = table height 720mm minus top thickness 38mm; specify actual measurements when ordering to avoid mistakes.
  3. 3

    Sand All Parts

    ≈ 50 min

Sand using #120, then #180, and finally #240 sandpaper. For the 2×6 lumber top board, sand carefully — repeatedly wipe with a damp cloth to raise the grain, then let it fully dry before finishing with #240 to reduce stain absorption during meals.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 12

    Tip

    • Since the dining surface contacts food, no splinters are allowed; check smoothness by stroking with your fingertips.
    • The 'water pulling' process (damp wiping, drying, and re-sanding) reduces raised grain after finishing.
    • Using an orbital sander saves time; consider using rental services.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to chamfer edges causes snagging on clothes or skin, especially important at child face height.
    • Sanding produces large amounts of dust; perform outdoors or in ventilated areas like balconies or garages.
  4. 4

Temporary Assembly of Legs and Apron (Frame Construction)

    ≈ 45 min

Position the legs so that the apron boards are attached 50mm down from their top ends. Attach long and short apron boards to the outside of legs, driving two 75mm coarse-thread screws per joint. A rectangular frame indicates success. Always confirm right angles of corners with a carpenter’s square.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 12

    Tip

    • Attaching the apron outside the legs improves appearance, inside improves top fit and strength.
    • Drill 5mm pilot holes in the apron board before screwing to prevent leg wood splitting.
    • Right angle alignment of joints directly affects top board fit after assembly.

    Watch out

    • Driving 75mm screws without pilot holes splits 2×4 lumber easily.
    • Not matching leg orientation (knots, grain direction) results in uneven aesthetics.
  5. 5

Check Frame Right Angles and Diagonals

    ≈ 15 min

Place assembled frame on a flat floor to check all four legs contact the floor (checking for wobble). Measure both internal diagonal lengths with a tape measure; ensure the difference is within 2mm. If misaligned, loosen screws, correct with clamps from the diagonal direction, then retighten.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 5 / 12

    Tip

    • Use a flat floor to avoid measurement inaccuracies.
    • If diagonal difference exceeds 5mm, the top will sit unevenly; keep within 2mm.
    • Wobble means one leg is off the floor; adjust until all legs rest.

    Watch out

    • Ignoring frame distortion before proceeding causes uneven top placement.
    • Low-quality carpenter’s squares may be inaccurate by over 0.5 degrees, affecting assembly.
  6. 6

    Assemble the Top Board

    ≈ 40 min

Lay 9 pieces of 2×6 lumber out on a workbench, aligning the grain direction. Insert 3mm thick chopsticks between boards to create gaps for wood movement. From the backside, attach two reinforcing 2×4 lumber battens with wood glue and 45mm coarse-thread screws, joining the boards into a single top.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 12

    Tip

    • Alternate grain (heartwood) direction of boards to counteract warping and cracking.
    • Place battens 200mm inside from the edge; placing at edges looks bad.
    • 45mm screws do not penetrate the 38mm thick top; confirm length by measurement.

    Watch out

    • Butting boards tightly without gaps causes moisture swelling and board warping; always leave 3mm breathing space.
    • Battens attached skewed cause warping of the entire top; confirm squaredness with carpenter’s square.
  7. 7

    Attach Top Board to Frame

    ≈ 30 min

Place the top board on the frame, adjust so all sides overhang evenly by about 30mm. Drill 5mm pilot holes from apron boards into the top underside, then drive 75mm coarse-thread screws. Fix with 4 screws on long aprons and 2 on short aprons, total 12 screws.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 12

    Tip

    • 30-50mm overhang does not interfere with dining actions.
    • Drive screws slightly towards the inside from apron center to reduce wood splitting.
    • Screw length should not penetrate through top; length = apron thickness + 20mm or less.

    Watch out

    • Driving 75mm screws without pilot holes and countersinking risks screw heads protruding through top surface.
    • Excessive overhang (>50mm) causes top sagging; about 30mm is appropriate.
  8. 8

    Painting Surface Preparation

    ≈ 20 min

Lightly sand the entire assembled table again with #240 sandpaper before finishing. Remove dust with a damp cloth. Use indoor-appropriate finishes like water-based urethane varnish, Watco Oil, or Briwax. For surfaces contacting food, select paints compliant with food sanitation laws for safety.

    Sand
    #240
    SandSTEP 8 / 12

    Tip

    • Water-based urethane varnish (matte or semi-gloss) is highly water and heat resistant, ideal for dining tables.
    • Watco Oil preserves wood texture and provides a soft finish.
    • Always test finishes on scrap boards to check color before applying.

    Watch out

    • Glue spots repel finish; sand with #240 to remove.
    • Applying finish over remaining dust causes rough surfaces; clean thoroughly.
  9. 9

    First Coat Finishing

    ≈ 40 min

Apply the finish evenly with a brush: top board first, then aprons, legs, and underside, moving from large to small surfaces. Brush along wood grain in one direction to avoid brush marks. For water-based urethane varnish, wait about 3 hours before next step. For Watco Oil, allow 15-20 minutes for absorption, then wipe off excess and dry for 2 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 9 / 12

    Tip

    • Apply urethane varnish thinly in two coats; thick coats cause bubbles and shrinkage.
    • Wipe excess Watco Oil to prevent tackiness after drying.
    • Dry in a dust-free environment.

    Watch out

    • Applying thick varnish causes runs and uneven drying.
    • Drying under direct heat causes surface to dry with wet inside; use natural drying.
  10. 10

    Intermediate Sanding and Second Coat

    ≈ 40 min

Once first coat fully dries, smooth the surface by gently sanding with #400 fine sandpaper (intermediate sanding). Remove dust, then apply the second coat thinner than the first. For heavy-use tables, a third coat with another intermediate sanding provides a thicker protective layer.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 10 / 12

    Tip

    • #400 sanding lightly smooths only raised grain.
    • Two coats greatly improve water resistance and abrasion durability, recommended for dining tables.
    • Three coats produce a hard glossy finish similar to commercial tables.

    Watch out

    • Excessive sanding removes the first coat.
    • Touching the surface before drying leaves fingerprints and dust; adhere to a 24-hour drying time.
  11. 11

Waiting for Finish to Fully Cure

    ≈ 10 min

After finishing, do not place heavy objects on the table for at least 72 hours to allow full curing. Water-based urethane varnish fully cures in one week. Avoid eating or working on the table during this time and lightly cover with cloth to prevent dust settling.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 11 / 12

    Tip

    • Curing times vary by finish; follow manufacturer instructions strictly.
    • Confirm cure by pressing with fingernail: no dent means hardened.
    • Drying times vary by temperature: summer 3-4 days, winter 1 week or more.

    Watch out

    • Placing hot pots directly damages finish before curing.
    • Dropping dishes may chip finish; handle carefully until cured.
  12. 12

Attach Leg Pads and Final Checks

    ≈ 20 min

Attach felt pads to all four leg bottoms to protect flooring. Move the table to the installation site and check level with a level. Adjust pad thickness if wobbling occurs. Place chairs and check seating comfort, ensuring knees do not hit aprons.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 12 / 12

    Tip

    • 10mm thick felt pads absorb floor unevenness.
    • Use felt pads on hard floors (wood flooring), rubber pads on tatami floors.
    • If wobble persists, adjust by placing thinner pads on one leg.

    Watch out

    • Using table without pads damages floor due to weight.
    • If chair-seat-to-table-height clearance (difference) is not 270-300mm, dining posture is uncomfortable.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
