Build steps

  1. 1

    Measure and Confirm Installation Environment

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the installation site for the hexagonal picnic table (1500×1500×730mm). Confirm front and back space allowing chair movement (chair depth + at least 400mm) and workflow for placing dishes.

    Measure
    W 1500 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 12

    Tip

    • Standard dining space per person is approx. 600mm width x 400mm depth.
    • Table height 720mm assumes a typical dining chair seat height of 420mm plus 300mm clearance.
    • Maintain at least 800mm distance from wall to pull chairs out easily.

    Watch out

    • A 1200×700mm tabletop is standard for 4 people but can feel cramped with many shared dishes.
    • Overlooking chair backrest depth may result in unmanageable layout.
  2. 2

Create Cut List and Order Lumber from Home Center

    ≈ 40 min

Prepare 11 pieces of 2×6 lumber for tabletop (38×140×1500mm), 4 pieces of 2×4 lumber for legs (38×89×692mm), 2 long aprons (38×89×1424mm), 2 short aprons (38×89×1424mm). Prepare 60 pieces of 75mm coarse-thread screws. Using paid cutting service at home center is convenient.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 12

    Tip

    • 2×6 lumber actual size is 38×140mm. Be aware real size differs from nominal.
    • Nine 140mm boards side by side measure 1260mm. Allowing 3mm gaps between boards totals 1284mm.
    • Effective tabletop width is 9 boards × 140mm + 8 gaps × 3mm = 1284mm; this surpasses 1500mm width, so adjust board count or width.
    • Check for warp or twist in 2×6 lumber to avoid wavy tabletop. Inspect visually at purchase.
    • Specify leg length as 682mm (730mm table height minus 38mm tabletop thickness) to avoid cutting mistakes.

    Watch out

    • Driving 75mm screws without pilot holes splits 2×4 lumber easily.
    • Incorrect leg lengths cut by supplier can cause assembly problems.
  3. 3

    Sanding All Lumber Pieces

    ≈ 50 min

Sand in order: #120 → #180 → #240 grit. Pay special attention to 2×6 tabletop boards — repeatedly dampen surface and dry to raise grain, then finish with #240 for stain resistance during meals.

    Sand
    #120 → #180 → #240
    SandSTEP 3 / 12

    Tip

    • No splinters allowed on dining surfaces; check by running finger pads gently over boards.
    • Dampening and drying ('raising the grain') reduces fuzz after sanding.
    • An orbital sander shortens work time; consider rental services.

    Watch out

    • Not chamfering edges causes snags on clothing or skin — especially around kids' face height.
    • Sanding produces large dust amounts; perform in ventilated area like balcony or garage.
  4. 4

Temporary Assembly of Legs and Aprons (Frame Construction)

    ≈ 45 min

Position leg tops 50mm down from ends of the four 2×4 legs. Attach long and short aprons to the outside of legs using two 75mm coarse-thread screws per joint. Aim to create rectangular frame. Use carpenter's square to verify all four corners are right angles.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 12

    Tip

    • Attaching aprons outside the legs improves appearance; inside attachment increases tabletop contact strength.
    • Drill 5mm pilot holes into aprons before screwing to prevent leg splitting.
    • Right angles in joints directly affect tabletop fit.

    Watch out

    • Driving 75mm screws without pilot holes causes splitting of 2×4 aprons.
    • Mismatched leg orientation (knots, grain direction) looks uneven.
  5. 5

Check Frame Right Angles and Diagonals

    ≈ 15 min

Place frame on flat floor; check all four legs rest solidly (no wobble). Measure two diagonal lengths inside frame using tape measure; the difference must be within 2mm. If misaligned, loosen screws and clamp diagonally to adjust, then retighten screws.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 5 / 12

    Tip

    • Uneven floors skew measurements; work on level surface.
    • More than 5mm diagonal difference causes tabletop skewing; maintain within 2mm.
    • Wobble means one leg is off floor; adjust until all legs contact.

    Watch out

    • Ignoring frame misalignment causes tabletop gaps or rocking.
    • Low quality carpenter's squares can have 0.5°+ errors.
  6. 6

    Assemble Tabletop

    ≈ 40 min

Lay out nine 2×6 boards on workbench aligning grain direction. Insert 3mm-thick split bamboo sticks between boards to maintain spacing (wood breathing space). Attach two 2×4 reinforcement battens underneath with wood glue and 45mm coarse-thread screws to unify tabletop.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 12

    Tip

    • Alternate grain direction (annual ring orientation) of boards to offset warping and reduce cracks.
    • Position battens 200mm inside from tabletop edges; edge placement looks unsightly.
    • Confirm 45mm screw does not penetrate 38mm thickness.

    Watch out

    • Tight joint without gaps causes swelling and warping due to moisture; maintain 3mm gap.
    • Angled battens cause entire tabletop to warp; use carpenter's square to keep straight.
  7. 7

    Secure Tabletop to Frame

    ≈ 30 min

Place tabletop on frame, check balanced overhang approx. 30mm all around. Drill 5mm pilot holes from aprons upward into tabletop underside and drive 75mm coarse-thread screws. Use 4 screws from each long apron and 2 from each short apron, total 12 screws.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 12

    Tip

    • 30-50mm overhang avoids interference with dining actions.
    • Screw closer to inner apron edge to reduce wood splitting.
    • Use screw length no longer than apron thickness plus 20mm to avoid protrusion.

    Watch out

    • Driving 75mm screws without pilot holes and countersinking may cause screw head to protrude through surface.
    • Overhang larger than 50mm causes tabletop deflection; 30mm is ideal.
  8. 8

    Surface Preparation for Finishing

    ≈ 20 min

Lightly sand entire assembled table again with #240 grit sandpaper; remove dust with damp cloth. Use outdoor wood finishes such as water-based urethane varnish, wood preservative stains (e.g., Xyladecor), or Osmo color. For surfaces contacting food, select finishes marked as compliant with food sanitation laws.

    Sand
    #240
    SandSTEP 8 / 12

    Tip

    • Water-based urethane varnish (matte or semi-gloss) offers water and heat resistance suitable for dining tables.
    • Xyladecor preserves wood texture with soft finish.
    • Always test finish on scrap wood before application to confirm color.

    Watch out

    • Glue residue repels finish; sand with #240 before finishing.
    • Residual dust leads to rough finish; clean thoroughly before coating.
  9. 9

    First Coat of Finish

    ≈ 40 min

Using brush, apply finish uniformly over entire table, in order: tabletop, aprons, legs, then underside. Brush along wood grain in a single direction to avoid streaks. For water-based urethane, allow approx. 3 hours drying. For Xyladecor, soak in 15-20 minutes, wipe off excess, then dry for 2 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 9 / 12

    Tip

    • Thin coats of urethane (2 coats recommended) prevent bubbles and shrinkage.
    • Always wipe excess Xyladecor to avoid tacky surface after drying.
    • Place in dust-free environment while drying.

    Watch out

    • Applying thick finish causes drips and uneven drying.
    • Drying with direct heat causes surface to dry prematurely, leaving internal finish incomplete.
  10. 10

Sanding Between Coats and Second Coat Application

    ≈ 40 min

When first coat is fully dry, gently sand surface with #400 ultra-fine sandpaper to remove raised grain. Remove dust and apply second coat thinner than first. For increased durability and thickness on dining surfaces, apply a third coat with an additional sanding step.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 10 / 12

    Tip

    • #400 sanding only smooths surface fuzz without removing finish layer.
    • Two coats substantially enhance water resistance and abrasion durability; essential for dining tables.
    • Three coats yield hard, glossy finish quality like commercial tables.

    Watch out

    • Over-sanding removes first finish layer.
    • Handling before fully dry causes fingerprints and dust to embed; observe minimum 24h drying time.
  11. 11

    Allow Finish to Fully Cure

    ≈ 10 min

After final coat application, wait at least 72 hours before placing any heavy items on the table to allow full curing. Water-based urethane varnish takes one week for complete cure. During this curing, avoid eating or working on the table and loosely cover with cloth to prevent dust.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 11 / 12

    Tip

    • Curing time varies by finish type; follow manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Test cure by pressing lightly with fingernail without leaving indentation.
    • Curing time changes with temperature; summer 3-4 days, winter up to one week.

    Watch out

    • Placing hot pots on surface before full cure melts finish and leaves marks.
    • Dropping dishes can chip finish; handle cautiously until curing completes.
  12. 12

Attach Leg Pads and Final Checks

    ≈ 20 min

Affix felt pads to all four leg bottoms to protect floor. Move table to final location and verify horizontal level using level tool. Adjust pad thickness if wobble detected. Position chairs and sit to confirm knees do not hit aprons.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 12 / 12

    Tip

    • 10mm thick felt pads absorb floor unevenness.
    • Use felt pads for hard floors and rubber pads for tatami mats.
    • Adjust a single thinner pad if slight wobble remains.

    Watch out

    • Using table without pads causes floor damage from weight.
    • Incorrect chair-to-table height clearance (270-300mm) results in poor dining posture.

Warnings

  • ⚠️When used outdoors, wood preservative coating is essential (recommend reapplication once a year).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
