Build steps

  1. 1

Final confirmation of components and tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x8 (19×200×1200mm), six shelf boards (19×200×900mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (900×1200mm), 32 pieces of 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-brackets. Tools include electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, and stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 900 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each piece for warp visually at purchase, choosing pieces with warp within 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are the lifeline for 'anti-tip'. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber piece for warp, splits, and knots before purchase. Using material with warp over 1mm will distort shelf boards.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and easily breaks during handling. Manage it upright immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Securing workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where you can assemble a bookshelf 1200mm tall standing up. Ceiling height should be at least 2200mm and floor area about 1500×1200mm. Lay blue sheets and support long boards on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor; standing the shelf upright is the final step. This allows working even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • The assembled bookshelf is difficult to stand up by one person. Two people are recommended for safety.
    • If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, the shelf may hit the ceiling when standing up. Confirm in advance.
  3. 3

Creating cut list and placing cut orders

    ≈ 20 min

Submit cut list to home center for two side boards (1200mm), six shelf boards (900mm), and one back panel (900×1200mm). If cutting yourself, support long boards (1200mm) on two sawhorses and cut carefully. Aim for cut accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cut charges are about 30-50 yen per cut. All cuts total roughly 1000 yen but save 30 minutes time by ordering cuts.
    • Because shelf boards are all the same size, bundle them together for a single precise cut.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF tends to warp even with straight cuts. Use a guide to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood bends easily and distorts if not supported underneath during cutting.
  4. 4

    Sanding all components (#120 → #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components first with #120 grit, then #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to shelf support surfaces on side boards, top and bottom of shelf boards, and edges (end grain). Round edges of shelves slightly to improve handling. After sanding, vacuum thoroughly to remove sawdust.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Sanding shelf surfaces smooth facilitates easy book handling.
    • End grain (cut edges) fibers raise easily; begin sanding carefully with #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; oversanding will alter dimensions. Use #120 as primary, #240 only for finishing.
    • Rounding edges excessively looks clumsy. Keep radius around 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking shelf positions on side boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards side by side and mark shelf positions for six shelves with pencil. Marking intervals typically are 300mm each from the bottom for six tiers (total 1800mm) or adjusted for decorative wider spaces at the top. Align side boards perfectly and mark both simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp two side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions match exactly.
    • Use sizes like A4 (297mm height), A5 (210mm), or pocket-sized books (150mm) as guides when deciding shelf spacing for storage.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned shelf position between side boards causes shelves to be skewed. Clamping and marking simultaneously is essential.
    • Failing to account for 19mm shelf board thickness will result in narrower actual shelf spacing.
  6. 6

    Preparing pilot holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside of the side board through to the end grain of the shelf board. Use masking tape to mark drill depth: 19mm through the side board plus 10mm into the shelf board (total 29mm).

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole diameter is about 70% of the 4.2mm screw shaft, preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf board requires 4 pilot holes (2 on each side), totaling 24 for 6 shelves. Double-check to avoid missing holes.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient hole depth prevents screws from seating properly. Drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling through the opposite side of the shelf board by using tape depth stops.
  7. 7

Temporarily fixing shelf boards to one side board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor. Stand six shelf boards upright matching marked positions. Temporarily fix with F-clamps and check right angle connections between side board and shelves using carpenter's square. If square can't fit, visually check alignment.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Stand shelf boards from bottom to top for better stability during clamping.
    • It is best to have one clamp per shelf; having six clamps makes work easier. If fewer, proceed sequentially with two clamps.

    Watch out

    • Fixing with incorrect right angles will distort the assembly into a parallelogram. Always confirm with a carpenter's square.
    • Shelves protruding past the side board edges will prevent back panel installation.
  8. 8

    Driving screws on one side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from outside side board into shelf board end grain. Use two screws per shelf per side, totaling twelve screws. Screw heads should be flush with or sunk up to 0.5mm below the side board surface. Use medium torque on impact driver, finishing tightening by hand with a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Staggering two screws vertically slightly increases withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are noticeable, optionally fill with wooden dowels later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening can split 19mm thick SPF lumber end grain. Use medium torque and stop at hand tightening.
    • If screw goes in at an angle and protrudes on the other side, remove, fill with wood filler, and re-screw at proper position.
  9. 9

Preparing installation of opposite side board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand up the assembly with shelf boards fixed to one side board. Align the other side board’s marked positions to the opposite ends of shelf boards and temporarily clamp. Check for right angles while the entire structure stands upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person operation recommended: one to hold assembly, one to clamp for accuracy.
    • The opposite side board’s markings were made initially; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • One-person forcing can cause shelves to fall off onto the floor. Always work with two people or brace against a wall.
  10. 10

Driving screws on opposite side board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws from the opposite side board’s outside through pilot holes into shelf ends. Two screws per shelf per side, total twelve screws. After this, the main bookshelf structure (side boards and six shelves) is completed.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After securing both sides, check level of each shelf with a level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws, adjust, and re-tighten.

    Watch out

    • Driving screws on both sides simultaneously causes distortion. Fully screw one side first, then the other.
  11. 11

    Overall level and diagonal check

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor. Use a level to check each shelf's levelness. Measure diagonal distances (top-left to bottom-right, top-right to bottom-left) with a tape measure and confirm the difference is within 5mm. If warped, loosen clamps to adjust and add screws to secure afterward.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion. Correct before attaching back panel.
    • The bookshelf's rigidity relies on the back panel. Correct all distortions before installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf boards sagging in the middle worsens with book weight. A shelf length of 600mm is acceptable while over 1000mm requires reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Preparing to attach back panel

    ≈ 10 min

Position 4mm plywood back panel (900×1200mm) against the bookshelf’s rear. Align all four corners and confirm diagonal lengths match the bookshelf frame (the back panel can help final distortion correction). Once positioned, temporarily fix the back panel lightly to the frame using masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • The back panel is crucial for suppressing distortion. Attaching it slightly crooked reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood can be easily fixed with a stapler. Pre-drill pilot holes if using small nails.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than bookshelf, trim excess. If smaller, leave even gaps within 5mm around edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling back panel

    ≈ 20 min

Fix the back panel to side boards and shelves using a stapler (approx. 15mm staples) or small nails. Place fasteners every 100-150mm around the perimeter and at shelf board positions. Start at the corners and proceed diagonally to prevent distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers cost 1500-2500 yen at home centers and are faster than nails. Worth the investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions on back panel with pencil to avoid missing fasteners on shelves.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside can damage books; 15mm length is appropriate against 19mm thickness.
    • Only fastening edges and shelf locations prevents back panel from lifting when sagging.
  14. 14

    Preparing L-brackets installation

    ≈ 15 min

Install four 50mm L-brackets at upper back on left and right sides, two per side. One side attaches to bookshelf top edge, the other side attaches to wall (after wall stud location confirmation using a stud sensor).

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud sensors have low accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Studs typically have 455mm spacing; finding one helps estimate others.

    Watch out

    • Fixing only drywall without studs does not prevent tipping. Always screw into studs.
    • If L-bracket position does not match stud, slide brackets left or right to align screws with stud center.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-brackets to bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-brackets to the upper sideboard exterior of bookshelf. Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through bracket holes. Secure brackets flush or within 5mm of side board surface so they project perpendicularly to the wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Install L-brackets so the bent part is on the wall side and screw holes face bookshelf side.

    Watch out

    • Angled installation causes gaps between bracket and wall when fixing. Verify horizontality with a level.
  16. 16

Placing bookshelf and fixing to wall

    ≈ 20 min

Carefully stand and carry bookshelf to installation location (two people recommended). Set flush against wall, drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws through L-bracket wall-side holes into studs. Secure all four points to complete anti-tip installation.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Wall screws must be longer (45-50mm) than 38mm used on bookshelf side, to reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is critical; don't cut corners as tipping during earthquakes causes injuries or fatalities.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack strength against tipping. Always screw into studs.
    • If a gap over 5mm exists between wall and bookshelf, insert shims before fixing. Loose installation renders brackets ineffective.
  17. 17

    Cleaning before finishing

    ≈ 10 min

Vacuum the entire bookshelf and wipe with a dry cloth to completely remove sawdust, grease, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality greatly affects finish. Optionally mask plywood back panel as it absorbs finish quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wiping before finishing: perform a three-step process 'dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe' for perfect cleanliness.

    Watch out

    • Remaining sawdust causes roughness in finish. Inspect under lighting.
  18. 18

Applying first coat of oil stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) with brush over entire bookshelf. Sequence: outside of side boards → shelf board tops → shelf board undersides → back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. First coat uses about 60-70% of total oil.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Apply oil, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off excess; leaving untreated causes stickiness.
    • Brush width of 30-50mm is best for bookshelf work; larger brushes may not reach details.

    Watch out

    • Failing to wipe leaves sticky residue for over a week. Always wipe.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and can cause uneven color; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second coat of oil stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying of first coat, apply a second coat using about one-third to one-half amount of the first. Wipe off excess similarly. Two coats deepen color and enhance protection. Allow 24-48 hours for complete drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat covers color unevenness from first application; apply evenly and thinly over entire surface.
    • Apply a third coat if deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget wiping off excess on second coat. Thick applications cause unevenness.
    • Keep drying area indoors free from dust and insects during drying.
  20. 20

    Completion, use, and inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After 48 hours for complete oil drying, place books and begin use. Arrange heavy books on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week of use, re-check screws for looseness and L-bracket fixings; retighten as needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on the bottom two shelves; keep upper shelves lighter with paperbacks and novels.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protective effect.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing can transfer oil to books. Wait 48 hours or more.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy season. Shelves can warp from humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
  • ⚠️When fixing to the wall, always locate the studs (it is not allowed to fix only to the drywall).
