Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×400×1800mm), six shelf boards (19×400×1800mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (1800×1800mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and four L-brackets 50mm. Tools include an electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-style clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or finishing nails.

    Measure
    W 1800 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Inspect each board visually at purchase and select boards with warp within 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are essential safety components for tip-over prevention. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • When purchasing SPF lumber, check each board for warp, cracking, and knots. Using boards warped more than 1mm will distort the shelf boards.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and easily breaks. After cutting, store it upright to avoid damage.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a space tall enough to stand an 1800mm bookshelf. A ceiling height of at least 2200mm and floor space of approximately 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay a blue tarp and use two saw horses to support long materials.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble the bookshelf laying it flat on the floor; stand it up only at the last step. This allows assembly in small rooms.
    • The assembled bookshelf is difficult to stand up alone. Two people are recommended for safety.

    Watch out

    • The assembled shelf is difficult to stand up alone; 2-person work is safer.
    • If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling during standing up. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Cutting Order

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list for two side boards (1800mm), six shelf boards (1800mm), and one back panel (1800×1800mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support long pieces on two saw horses and perform push cuts. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fees are 30-50 yen per cut; full cutting service costs about 1000 yen and saves 30 minutes to immediate delivery.
    • Since the six shelf boards have identical dimensions, bundling them and cutting at once yields the best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber 19mm thick can warp even with straight cuts; use a guide to cut straight.
    • The 4mm plywood is soft and warps without adequate support underneath when cutting.
  4. 4

Sanding All Parts (#120 to #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts first with #120 grit then with #240 grit sandpaper. Focus especially on the shelf support surfaces of the side boards, upper and lower surfaces of the shelf boards, and all cut ends. Rounding the shelf edges where hands touch improves handling. After sanding, vacuum all wood dust thoroughly.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Finish the shelf board surfaces to be smooth to facilitate easy book handling.
    • Cut ends tend to raise fibers; start sanding with #120 grit carefully here.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; oversanding distorts dimensions. Use #120 primarily and #240 only for finishing.
    • Excessive rounding of edges appears clumsy; keep radius about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side boards side by side and mark with a pencil the positions for the six shelves. Shelf intervals can be 300mm each from bottom upwards, occupying full 1800mm, or adjusted to add wider spaces for decorations at top. Mark both boards simultaneously to ensure identical positions.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking so shelf positions perfectly align.
    • Use standard book heights (A4: 297mm, A5: 210mm, paperback: 150mm) to decide shelf spacing for easy storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions on left and right boards differ, shelves will be inserted crookedly; marking simultaneously is mandatory.
    • Remember to include the 19mm shelf board thickness when calculating intervals, or spacing will be too narrow.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Pilot holes are drilled from the side board outside surface through to the shelf board end grain, penetrating the side board thickness (19mm) plus 10mm into the shelf board for a total of 29mm. Use masking tape on the drill bit to mark depth.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • A 3mm pilot hole corresponds to about 70% of the 4.2mm coarse-thread screw shaft diameter, effectively preventing split wood.
    • For each shelf board, drill two pilot holes on both left and right side boards: 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 holes total; check carefully not to miss any.

    Watch out

    • If pilot holes are too shallow, screws won't fully seat; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling completely through the shelf board; use tape to limit drill depth.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards on One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor and stand the six shelf boards at marked positions. Temporarily fix using F-type clamps. Check that the shelf boards form right angles to the side board with a carpenter's square. Visually confirm right angles in areas where the square cannot fit.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Insert shelf boards sequentially from bottom to top for better stability.
    • Ideally, one clamp is used per shelf board; having six clamps speeds work but two clamps can be used progressively if fewer are available.

    Watch out

    • If fixed with misaligned right angles, the assembly will be a parallelogram distorted shape; always confirm square.
    • If shelf boards protrude beyond the side board edges, the back panel cannot be installed properly.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through the pilot holes from the outside of the side board into the shelf board end grain. Use two screws per shelf position, thus 12 screws total for 6 shelves. Screw heads should be flush or recessed up to 0.5mm into the side board. Set the electric screwdriver torque to medium and finish tightening the last quarter turn by hand.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slightly stagger the two screws vertically for higher withdrawal resistance.
    • If screw heads are visually prominent, optional wood dowel plugs can fill holes later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening splits the 19mm thick SPF lumber end grain; medium torque setting with hand finishing prevents this.
    • If screws drive in at an angle and protrude out the other side, remove, fill with wood filler, then re-drive at correct position.
  9. 9

Preparing to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the partially assembled side with one side and shelves fixed, and position the second side board aligning the opposite shelf board ends to the marked lines. Temporarily clamp in place. Ensure the entire assembly is upright and confirm right angles and alignment.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended for two people: one holds the assembly, another clamps for accuracy.
    • The marking lines on the second side board were made at the start; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Working alone risks shelves slipping and falling; use two persons or lean assembly against the wall securely.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the second side board into the shelf boards. Two screws per shelf position, 12 screws total, complete the fixing of side boards and shelves, finalizing the main structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After securing both sides, check each shelf board with the level for horizontality. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.
    • Do not screw both sides simultaneously; fix one side fully before the other to avoid distortion.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously can cause warping and misalignment.
  11. 11

Check Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor and check horizontality of each shelf board using a level. Measure diagonals (top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left) using a tape measure, confirming a difference within 5mm. If distortion is detected, loosen clamps, adjust, and add screws to fix securely.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • A diagonal difference greater than 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape. Correct this before attaching the back panel.
    • The back panel is designed to increase rigidity; fix distortions before installing it.

    Watch out

    • Shelf boards sagging in the center worsens with book weight. Shelf length of 600mm is acceptable; over 1000mm requires reinforcement consideration.
  12. 12

    Back Panel Attachment Preparation

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back panel (1800×1800mm) against the bookshelf back, aligning corners and verifying matching diagonal measurements with the main body. This alignment can correct minor overall distortions. Once positioned, lightly tape the back panel with masking tape to temporarily fix it.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • The back panel is critical to suppress distortions. Installing at a slight angle reduces rigidity.
    • The 4mm plywood can be easily stapled; if using finishing nails, drill pilot holes first.

    Watch out

    • If the back panel is larger than the bookshelf body, trim the protruding parts; if smaller, maintain even gaps within 5mm along edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling the Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Attach the back panel to side and shelf boards with a stapler (15mm staples) or finishing nails. Space staples or nails about every 100-150mm around the perimeter and on shelf board locations. Begin nailing from the corners then proceed along diagonal lines to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers cost 1500-2500 yen at home centers and offer faster application than nails; a worthwhile investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf board locations on the back panel with pencil before stapling to avoid missing fastening points.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding into the bookshelf interior can damage books; 15mm staples are suitable for 19mm thick lumber.
    • Stapling only at the four edges without shelf board lines allows the back panel to warp and lift.
  14. 14

    Preparation for L-Bracket Attachment

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare to attach four L-brackets 50mm: two on each upper rear side of the bookshelf. One side of each bracket attaches to the bookshelf top edge side boards; the other side will fasten to the wall. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs in advance.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Low-cost stud finders from 100 yen stores are often inaccurate; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Wall studs are typically spaced at 455mm centers. Once one is found, approximate positions of neighbors are easier.

    Watch out

    • If only attaching brackets to gypsum board without hitting studs, tip-over prevention is ineffective. Always screw into studs.
    • If bracket positions don't align with studs, offset brackets left or right until screws reach stud centers.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-brackets to the outside upper end of bookshelf side boards. Use 38mm coarse-thread screws through the provided holes. Position brackets flush with, or within 5mm of, the side board surface, projecting perpendicular to the wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure the bracket bends face the wall side, and the screw holes face the bookshelf for proper orientation.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are installed at an angle, gaps form between bracket and wall making wall fixing ineffective. Confirm with a level.
  16. 16

    Bookshelf Installation and Wall Fixing

    ≈ 20 min

Lift and move the bookshelf to the installation location (two people recommended). Position it flush against the wall and drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws from the bracket wall side holes into the wall studs (use screws supplied or separate). Fix all four points to complete tip-over prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Screws shorter than 38mm are insufficient to reach studs; use 45-50mm screws.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step; neglecting it risks injury or fatality during earthquake tip-over.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone do not provide adequate strength; always screw into a stud.
    • If a gap of over 5mm exists between wall and bookshelf, shim before fixing. Fixing without shimming renders brackets ineffective.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Clean the entire bookshelf using a vacuum and dry cloth to remove all wood dust, oils, and fingerprints, as cleaning quality greatly affects finishing. Optionally mask the plywood back panel since it absorbs stains quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Perform wet wipe with dry cloth followed by damp cloth then dry cloth again for thorough cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough paint finish; inspect under lighting carefully.
  18. 18

First Coat of Oil Stain Application

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (such as Watco Oil or Kinura) evenly with a brush in this order: outside of side boards, top surfaces of shelf boards, undersides of shelf boards, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total oil for the first coat due to high absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Process is application → wait 10-15 minutes → wipe off excess; not wiping leaves sticky residue.
    • Brush width between 30-50mm is optimal for bookshelf work; wider brushes miss details.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe leaves sticky finish for over a week; always wipe.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs and spreads unevenly; apply thin coat and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After the first coat dries for 24 hours, apply the second coat with 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of the first. Wipe excess again. Two coats deepen the color and enhance protection. Allow 24-48 hours for complete drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects uneven color from the first; apply thin and evenly.
    • A third coat can be added to deepen color further if desired.

    Watch out

    • Neglecting wipe-off causes uneven finish; avoid thick application.
    • Dry during 2nd coat curing must be dust and insect free indoors.
  20. 20

    Completion, Use Start, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After complete drying (at least 48 hours), place books and start use. Position heavy books on lower shelves, lighter books higher, for good balance and stability. After one week, recheck screws and L-bracket tightness and retighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) in the bottom two shelves; use paperbacks and light books on top.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore shine and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books before full drying risks oil transfer; wait minimum 48 hours.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy seasons to prevent shelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Always drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
