Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards made of SPF lumber 1x8 (19×230×1000mm), six shelf boards (19×230×1000mm), one plywood back board 4mm thick (1000×1000mm), sixteen 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-brackets. The tools include electric screwdriver, handsaw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or fine nails.

    Measure
    W 1000 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber warps easily. When purchasing, check each piece visually and select boards with warp less than 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are safety-critical as anti-tip measures. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards with warp over 1mm will cause shelf distortion.
    • Plywood back board of 4mm thickness is thin and prone to breaking during moving. After cutting, stand it upright immediately for storage.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where a 600mm tall bookshelf can be assembled standing. Minimum ceiling height is 2200mm, and floor space about 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay a blue tarp and use two sawhorses to support long materials.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done laying on the floor; the bookshelf is only stood up at the final step. Assembly is possible even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • It is difficult to stand the assembled bookshelf alone; two people are recommended for safety.
    • If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, the bookshelf will contact the ceiling when standing up; check beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating the Cut List and Cutting Materials

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list to the home center: two side boards at 600mm lengths, six shelf boards at 1000mm each, and one back board at 1000×1000mm. If cutting by yourself, support the long boards on two sawhorses and perform pull cuts. Aim for cutting accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fee is 30-50 yen per cut. Having all cuts done costs about 1000 yen but reduces time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Six shelf boards are the same size, so stacking them for one cut gives the highest accuracy.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber 19mm thick warps easily even with straight cuts, so use a guide to cut accurately straight.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and will warp if not supported underneath during cutting.
  4. 4

Sanding All Materials (#120 to #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts with #120 grit and then #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces on the side boards, upper and lower surfaces of shelf boards, and wood cut edges. Rounding shelf edges that are frequently handled makes it easier to use. Clean off all dust with a vacuum after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth shelf board surfaces help books slide on and off smoothly.
    • Wood cut edges have raised fibers and require careful sanding, starting with #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF is soft; sanding too much can change dimensions. Use #120 grit for main sanding and #240 for finishing only.
    • Rounding edges excessively looks clumsy; keep radius about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards side by side and mark positions for fixing six shelf boards using a pencil. Shelf spacing is typically 300mm each for six levels starting from the bottom (total 1800mm), or adjust for decorative upper spacing per design. Align the two side boards perfectly and mark them simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions match exactly.
    • Use shelf heights based on paper sizes like A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), or pocket paperback (150mm) for convenient storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions on left and right boards do not align, the shelf boards will be skewed; simultaneous marking is essential.
    • Do not forget shelf board thickness (19mm) when calculating spacing, or actual gaps will be narrower.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside of the side board toward the shelf board ends, so the pilot hole penetrates through the side board (19mm thick) and into the shelf board 10mm (total 29mm). Use masking tape as a depth marker.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole is about 70% of the 4.2mm screw shaft diameter, preventing splitting.
    • Each shelf board requires 2 pilot holes on left and right boards, total 24 holes for 6 levels; ensure none are missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from fully seating; it is safer to drill slightly deeper.
    • Do not drill through the opposite side of the shelf board; use tape to limit depth.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards on One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor and stand six shelf boards at marked positions. Temporarily fix with F-clamps and check right angles between side and shelf boards using a carpenter’s square. Where the square cannot reach, check visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Attach shelf boards from bottom upwards for stability.
    • Ideally, use one clamp per shelf board (six clamps total); if unavailable, work sequentially with two clamps.

    Watch out

    • If right angles are off during fixing, the whole assembly becomes a parallelogram. Always confirm right angles.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges will prevent attaching the back board later.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the side board into shelf boards. Use two screws per position, total 12 screws for six shelves. Screw heads should be flush or recessed 0.5mm below the side board surface. Set electric driver torque medium and finish tightening by hand about a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset the two screws slightly vertically to increase withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are noticeable, optional wood plugs can cover holes later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws can split 19mm thick SPF edges; use medium torque.
    • If screws go in crooked and protrude on the opposite side, remove, fill with wood filler, and re-screw at a different position.
  9. 9

Preparing to Attach the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly with one side board and fixings, then align the opposite side board to shelf board ends using marked lines. Temporarily clamp. Check verticality and right angles with the entire assembly upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended with two people: one to hold, one to clamp for accuracy.
    • Opposite side board markings are pre-marked; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this alone risks shelves falling to the floor; always work with two people or brace the assembly against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes on the opposite side (outside of side board) into the shelf boards. Use two screws per position, total 12 screws. This completes fixing both side boards and six shelf boards, finalizing the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After securing both sides, check all shelf boards with a level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws, adjust, then refasten.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously causes distortion; fully screw one side first, then the other.
  11. 11

Checking Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor. Use a level to check each shelf is horizontal. Measure diagonals from top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left with a tape. Confirm diagonal difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust, then add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram distortion; fix before attaching back board.
    • The back board improves rigidity; fix distortions before attaching it.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging in the middle worsens with book weight. Shelf length 600mm is acceptable; above 1000mm consider reinforcement.
  12. 12

Preparing to Attach the Back Board

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm thick plywood back board (1000×1000mm) against the rear of the bookshelf. Align all corners and confirm diagonals match the bookshelf. Attaching the back board will correct final distortions. Once positioned, temporarily fix with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back board prevents distortion; attaching it even slightly off reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood is fixed easily with a stapler; if using fine nails, drill pilot holes first.

    Watch out

    • If back board is larger than bookshelf, cut excess parts. If smaller, maintain even gaps within 5mm at edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling the Back Board

    ≈ 20 min

Attach the back board to side and shelf boards using a stapler with 15mm staples or fine nails. Space staples 100-150mm apart around the perimeter and at shelves. Start from corners and follow diagonals to reduce distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • A stapler costs 1500-2500 yen at home centers and is faster than nails; worthwhile investment for bookshelf construction.
    • Mark shelf positions on the back board beforehand with pencil to avoid missing staples on shelves.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside the bookshelf can scratch books. 15mm length staples are ideal for 19mm lumber.
    • Stapling only on the four edges without shelf positions causes back board lift when sagging occurs.
  14. 14

    Preparing to Attach L-Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Install four 50mm L-brackets, two on each upper rear side of the bookshelf. One side attaches to the top edge of the bookshelf, the other to wall studs confirmed with a stud finder.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Inexpensive stud finders have low accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Stud spacing is usually 455mm pitch; once one stud is found, neighbors are easier to locate.

    Watch out

    • Drywall alone cannot hold screws securely; always screw into studs for anti-tip safety.
    • If bracket positions don't align with studs, adjust brackets left or right so screws align with stud centers.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-brackets to the outside upper portions of the bookshelf side boards. Use 38mm coarse-thread screws through bracket holes. Fix brackets flush or recessed within 5mm of the side board surface, projecting perpendicular toward the wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Attach brackets so the bent portion faces the wall side and screw holes face the bookshelf side.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned brackets cause gaps between bracket and wall when fixing. Check with a level.
  16. 16

Setting up Bookshelf and Wall Fixing

    ≈ 20 min

Two people carry the bookshelf to the installation location and stand it. Place it firmly against the wall. Through L-bracket wall-side holes, drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws into wall studs. Fix all four points to complete anti-tip installation.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Wall screws should be longer than 38mm to reach studs (use 45-50mm screws).
    • Wall fixing is critical to safety; do not skip to prevent injury or death during earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Only drywall anchors do not provide sufficient strength; always screw into studs.
    • If there is a gap over 5mm between bookshelf and wall, insert shims before screwing. Loose brackets are ineffective.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Clean the entire bookshelf with a vacuum and dry cloth to completely remove dust, oils, and fingerprints. Quality cleaning greatly affects finishing quality. Optionally, mask the plywood back board beforehand as it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wipe before painting in three stages: dry wipe, wet wipe, dry wipe again, for thorough cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Remaining dust causes rough surfaces after painting. Check under light.
  18. 18

Applying First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) over all surfaces with a brush. Apply in order: outside of side boards, shelf board top surfaces, shelf board undersides, back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. The first coat uses about 60-70% of total oil.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Apply, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off. Leaving excess causes sticky residue.
    • Use brushes 30-50mm wide for bookshelf work; too large brush misses details.

    Watch out

    • Failure to wipe causes sticky surface for over a week; always wipe thoroughly.
    • Plywood back board absorbs oil quickly and can have uneven coloration; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After first coat dries for 24 hours, apply the second coat using about 1/3 to 1/2 of the first coat amount. Wipe off excess again. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Fully dry for 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat evens out uneven color from the first coat; apply thin, even coating.
    • Add a third coat if darker color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Wiping off excess is essential again; thick coats cause unevenness.
    • Keep indoors during drying to avoid dust and insects.
  20. 20

    Completion, Use Start and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After oil is completely dry (48 hours), arrange books and start use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter books upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week of use, recheck screw tightness and L-bracket fixings and retighten as necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Place heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) concentrated on the bottom two shelves; lightweight paperback books on upper shelves.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore sheen and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing risks oil transferring to books; wait at least 48 hours drying.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers especially during rainy season. The bookshelf itself can warp from humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
  • ⚠️When fixing to the wall, always locate the studs (do not fix to drywall only).
