Final Check of Materials and Tools
≈ 15 minPrepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×400×2000mm), six shelf boards (19×400×2400mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (2400×2000mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and four L-brackets 50mm. Tools include electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or fine nails.
MeasureW 2400 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 20Tip
- SPF lumber tends to warp. Inspect each board visually when purchasing and select those with warp under 1mm.
- The L-brackets and screws are critical for "tipping prevention". Never omit them.
Watch out
- Check each SPF board individually for warp, splits, or knots before purchase. Using boards warped more than 1mm will result in warped shelf boards.
- The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and fragile; it can break easily during move. Store it upright immediately after cutting.
- 2
Securing the Work Space
≈ 10 minSecure a space where you can stand a 2000mm tall bookshelf. Ensure ceiling height is over 2200mm and floor area about 1500×1200mm for comfort. Lay a blue sheet and support long lumber with two sawhorses.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 2 / 20Tip
- Assemble the bookshelf lying on the floor and stand it up at the final stage. This allows work in small rooms.
Watch out
- It is difficult to stand the assembled bookshelf up alone. Two people are safer.
- Ceiling height under 2000mm will cause the bookshelf to hit the ceiling when standing it up. Verify in advance.
- 3
Creating Cut List and Requesting Cutting
≈ 20 minSubmit cut list for two side boards (2000mm), six shelf boards (2400mm), and the back panel (2400×2000mm) to home center. If cutting yourself, support the long boards on two sawhorses and cut carefully. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 3 / 20Tip
- Cutting costs are 30-50 yen per cut. Requesting all cuts costs about 1000 yen but saves about 30 minutes or more.
- Since the six shelf boards have the same dimensions, bundling and cutting them together yields best accuracy.
Watch out
- SPF lumber 19mm thick tends to warp even with straight cuts. Use a guide for straight cutting.
- The 4mm plywood is soft and will bend upwards if unsupported during cutting, causing distortion.
- 4
Sanding All Components (#120 then #240)
≈ 40 minSand all components from #120 to #240 grit. Pay special attention to shelf support surfaces on side boards, top and bottom surfaces and edges of shelf boards. Rounding shelf edges where hands touch improves handling. Vacuum thoroughly to remove wood dust after sanding.
Sand#120SandSTEP 4 / 20Tip
- Smooth shelf board surfaces make book insertion and removal easier.
- Edges (cut ends) have raised fibers, so sand carefully starting from #120 grit.
Watch out
- SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding will distort dimensions. Use #120 grit mainly, #240 only for finishing.
- Over-rounding edges looks unsightly. Limit rounding radius to about 2mm.
- 5
Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards
≈ 15 minPlace two side boards together and mark positions for six shelf boards with pencil. Typical shelf spacing is 300mm for six tiers from the bottom (using 1800mm total), or design with wider top decorative spacing. Align both boards fully to mark identical positions simultaneously.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 5 / 20Tip
- Clamp two side boards together before marking to ensure perfectly matching shelf positions.
- Use standard book sizes: A4 (297mm high), A5 (210mm), and paperback (150mm) as references for spacing to store books conveniently.
Watch out
- Misaligned shelf positions cause shelves to be skewed. Mark simultaneously with clamped boards.
- Do not forget to add 19mm shelf board thickness when calculating intervals, or actual spacing will be narrower.
- 6
Preparing Pilot Holes
≈ 20 minDrill Ø3mm pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from outside of side board through to shelf board edge, so pilot holes go from side board exterior through 19mm thickness plus 10mm into shelf board (total 29mm). Use masking tape on drill to mark depth.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 6 / 20Tip
- Ø3mm pilot holes are about 70% of the 4.2mm shaft diameter of the 38mm coarse-thread screws, effectively preventing wood splitting.
- Each shelf requires pilot holes on side board left and right edges for 2 screws each: 6 shelves × 4 screws = 24 holes. Check none are missed.
Watch out
- Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from seating fully; drill slightly deeper for safety.
- Avoid drilling through the opposite side of shelf boards by limiting depth with tape mark.
- 7
Temporary Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board
≈ 20 minLay one side board flat on the floor and stand six shelf boards at the marked positions. Temporarily clamp with F-clamps and verify right angles between side board and each shelf board using carpenter's square. Check visually where square cannot fit.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 7 / 20Tip
- Install shelf boards from bottom upward for stability.
- One clamp per shelf board is ideal; six clamps ease work, but two clamps working sequentially can suffice.
Watch out
- If right angles are not accurate when fixed, the entire structure becomes a parallelogram. Always check with carpenter's square.
- If shelf boards extend beyond side board edges, the back panel cannot be attached properly later.
- 8
Screwing One Side
≈ 15 minDrive coarse-thread screws 38mm through pilot holes from outside side board into shelf board edges. Use two screws per position (slightly offset vertically) totaling 12 screws for six shelves. Screw heads must be flush or recessed up to 0.5mm in side board surface. Use medium torque on impact driver; finish tightening manually by 1/4 turn.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 8 / 20Tip
- Offsetting two screws slightly on vertical axis increases pull-out strength.
- If screw heads are visible, holes can be optionally filled with wood plugs later.
Watch out
- Over-tightening screws in soft 19mm SPF lumber causes wood to split; stop at medium torque.
- If screws go in crooked and protrude through opposite side, remove, fill with wood filler, and re-screw at a different position.
- 9
Preparation for Opposite Side Board Attachment
≈ 15 minStand the unit with one side fixed and fit the other side board against the opposite shelf board ends, aligning marked positions. Clamp temporarily and check right angles with the unit standing upright.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 9 / 20Tip
- This step is recommended with two people: one supports while the other clamps for accuracy.
- Opposite side board markings are made at initial layout; do not mark again.
Watch out
- Attempting this alone risks shelf boards falling and damaging the floor. Use two people or lean against wall.
- 10
Screwing the Opposite Side
≈ 15 minDrive coarse-thread screws 38mm through pilot holes from opposite side board exterior into shelf boards. Use two screws per shelf position totaling 12 screws. This completes fastening both side boards and six shelf boards, finishing the main bookshelf structure.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 10 / 20Tip
- After fastening both sides, check horizontality of all shelf boards with level. If even one shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.
Watch out
- Screwing both sides simultaneously causes distortion. Finish all screws on one side first, then the opposite.
- 11
Checking Overall Level and Diagonals
≈ 15 minPlace assembled bookshelf on the floor and check each shelf board's horizontal level. Measure diagonals (top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left) with measuring tape; difference should be within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust, then add screws to fix.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 11 / 20Tip
- Diagonal difference exceeding 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion. Correct before attaching back panel.
- Bookshelf gains rigidity by back panel; correct distortions before attaching it.
Watch out
- Shelf board sagging (center droop) worsens under book weight. Design shelves up to 600mm span; consider reinforcement for spans over 1000mm.
- 12
Preparation for Back Panel Attachment
≈ 10 minPlace 4mm plywood back panel (2400×2000mm) against bookshelf rear. Align corners and ensure diagonals match the unit, as attaching the back panel finalizes distortion correction. Temporarily secure back panel with masking tape.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 12 / 20Tip
- The back panel is an important rigidity element. Attaching it skewed reduces strength.
- 4mm plywood can be easily fastened with stapler. Pre-drill pilot holes if using fine nails.
Watch out
- If back panel is larger than the bookshelf, trim protruding edges. If smaller, maintain uniform gap within 5mm around edges.
- 13
Stapling the Back Panel
≈ 20 minStaple the back panel to side boards and shelf boards using a stapler with 15mm staples or fine nails. Space staples approximately every 100-150mm around edges and along shelf board positions. Start stapling at corners and diagonals sequentially to avoid distortion.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 13 / 20Tip
- Staplers cost 1500-2500 yen at home centers and are faster to use than nails; worthwhile investment for bookshelf building.
- Mark shelf board positions on back panel with pencil before stapling to avoid missing attachment points.
Watch out
- Staples penetrating inside the bookshelf can scratch books. 15mm staples are appropriate for 19mm thick lumber.
- Stapling only on the 4 panel edges without shelf board positions causes back panel to bow under load.
- 14
Preparation for L-Bracket Attachment
≈ 15 minAttach four 50mm L-brackets at the upper back left and right of bookshelf, two on each side. One side fixes to bookshelf top edge, the other side to wall. Confirm wall stud positions with a stud sensor in advance.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 14 / 20Tip
- Store bought stud sensors from 100 yen shops are less accurate; home center versions (1000-2000 yen) are better.
- Wall studs typically spaced at 455mm. After finding one, estimate adjacent stud positions easily.
Watch out
- If wall is just drywall, screws won't hold and tipping prevention fails. Always screw into studs.
- If L-bracket positions do not align with studs, adjust bracket positions horizontally to center screws on studs.
- 15
Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf
≈ 10 minFix four L-brackets to upper side board exteriors using coarse-thread screws 38mm through the pre-made holes. Fasten brackets flush or within 5mm from side board surface, positioning to project perpendicularly outward from the wall side.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 15 / 20Tip
- Ensure L-brackets are installed with the bent part facing the wall and screw holes toward the bookshelf side.
Watch out
- If brackets are skewed, gaps form between bracket and wall during fixing. Check with level.
- 16
Installing Bookshelf and Securing to Wall
≈ 20 minCarry bookshelf to installation location (2 people recommended) and stand it close to wall. Drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws from wall-side L-bracket holes into wall studs (using supplied or separate screws). Secure all four points to complete tipping prevention.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 16 / 20Tip
- Screws into wall need to be longer (45-50mm) than those into bookshelf (38mm) to reach studs.
- Wall fixing is crucial to prevent injuries or death from tipping during earthquakes; do not skimp.
Watch out
- Drywall anchors alone are insufficient in strength. Always screw into studs.
- If there is more than 5mm gap between wall and bookshelf, insert shims before fixing; a gap reduces bracket effectiveness.
- 17
Cleaning Before Finishing
≈ 10 minClean entire bookshelf with vacuum and dry cloth to remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints completely. Pre-paint cleaning quality greatly affects finish. Optionally mask plywood back panel beforehand due to its quick paint absorption.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 17 / 20Tip
- Perform three-step wiping before finishing: dry wipe, wet wipe, and dry wipe again for perfect cleanliness.
Watch out
- Remaining wood dust causes rough textured paint surface. Check under bright light.
- 18
First Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 40 minApply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil or Kinura) with brush over entire surface in sequence: side board exterior, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. First coat uses about 60-70% of total amount due to absorption.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 18 / 20Tip
- Follow sequence: apply → wait 10-15 minutes → wipe off. Neglecting wiping leaves sticky residue.
- Use 30-50mm brushes for ease; larger brushes cannot reach details.
Watch out
- If wiping is forgotten, stickiness remains for more than a week. Always wipe off.
- Plywood back panel absorbs quickly causing unevenness; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
- 19
Second Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 25 minAfter first coat dries for 24 hours, apply second coat. Use 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of the first coat and wipe off as before. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 19 / 20Tip
- Second coat evens color by covering first coat's inconsistencies; apply thin and evenly.
- Apply additional coats if deeper color desired.
Watch out
- Do not skip wiping on second coat; thick layers cause unevenness.
- Keep indoors during drying to avoid dust and insects on surface.
- 20
Completion, Use, and Inspection
≈ 15 minAfter complete drying for 48 hours, place books and start use. Load heavy books on lower shelves, lighter on upper shelves for better balance and stability. One week after starting use, recheck screw looseness and L-bracket fastening and retighten if necessary.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 20 / 20Tip
- Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) on bottom two shelves; place paperbacks and smaller volumes on upper shelves for lighter load.
- Renew oil finish every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.
Watch out
- Placing books immediately can transfer oil onto them; wait at least 48 hours.
- Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy season. Bookshelf can warp from humidity.
Warnings
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
