Final Check of Materials and Tools
≈ 15 minPrepare 2 side boards (SPF lumber 1x8, 19×180×400mm), 6 shelf boards (19×180×800mm), 1 plywood back panel (4mm thick, 800×400mm), 16 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-shaped brackets 50mm. Tools required are electric screwdriver, saw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, 2 F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or finishing nails.
MeasureW 800 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 20Tip
- SPF lumber tends to warp. Inspect each board visually upon purchase and select those with warp within 1mm.
- L-shaped brackets and screws are the lifeline for tip-over prevention. Do not omit them under any circumstances.
Watch out
- Check each SPF board for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped over 1mm will cause shelf boards to become distorted.
- The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and fragile when moving. Stand it upright immediately after cutting to prevent breakage.
- 2
Securing the Work Area
≈ 10 minEnsure a workspace where the 400mm tall bookshelf can be assembled standing. A ceiling height of 2200mm or more and a floor space of about 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay down a blue sheet and support long pieces on two sawhorses.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 2 / 20Tip
- Assembly is done lying on the floor; the bookshelf is stood up at the final stage. Assembly can be done even in a small room.
Watch out
- Assembled bookshelf is difficult to stand up by one person; two people are safer.
- If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, furniture may hit the ceiling when stood up. Check in advance.
- 3
Creating Cut List and Requesting Cuts
≈ 20 minSubmit a cutting list to the home center for 2 side boards (400mm), 6 shelf boards (800mm), and 1 back panel (800×400mm). If cutting by yourself, support the 400mm pieces on two sawhorses and perform pull cuts. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 3 / 20Tip
- Cutting fee is about 30-50 yen per cut. Ordering all cuts costs around 1000 yen and saves about 30 minutes compared to self-cutting.
- Shelf boards are the same size; bundling them and cutting at once yields the highest precision.
Watch out
- Even with straight cuts, 19mm thick SPF lumber tends to warp, so use a guide to cut straight.
- Soft 4mm plywood tends to bend and distort if not supported below during cutting.
- 4
Sanding All Parts (#120 to #240 grit)
≈ 40 minSand all parts starting with #120 grit then finishing with #240. Pay special attention to shelf support surfaces on side boards, both sides of shelf boards, and wood ends. Round off shelf edges that will be touched for easier use. Remove all wood dust with a vacuum cleaner after sanding.
Sand#120SandSTEP 4 / 20Tip
- Finishing shelf board surfaces smooth helps make book insertion and removal easier.
- Wood ends (cut surfaces) have raised fibers; sand carefully starting with #120 grit.
Watch out
- SPF is soft; excessive sanding will alter dimensions. Use #120 mainly, #240 only for finishing.
- Rounding edges too much makes the look clumsy. Limit rounding radius to about 2mm.
- 5
Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards
≈ 15 minPlace two side boards together and mark with pencil the six shelf positions. Shelf spacing can be six tiers of 300mm each (total 1800mm) or adjusted for wider display shelves at top. Clamp the two boards together to ensure identical markings on both sides.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 5 / 20Tip
- Clamping two side boards together before marking ensures shelf positions exactly match left and right.
- Use standard book heights (A4: 297mm, A5: 210mm, Bunkoban: 150mm) as references for shelf spacing for practical storage.
Watch out
- Misaligned shelf markings on sides cause shelves to be installed crooked. Mark while clamped together.
- Do not forget to account for 19mm shelf board thickness when calculating shelf spacing; otherwise spacing will be too narrow in practice.
- 6
Preparing Pilot Holes
≈ 20 minDrill φ3mm pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside of side board through into shelf board end grain, penetrating the 19mm side board and entering 10mm into shelf board (total 29mm). Use masking tape on bit as depth guide.
Drill a holeφ3mmDrillSTEP 6 / 20Tip
- φ3mm pilot holes are 70% of the coarse-thread screw core diameter (4.2mm), effectively preventing wood splitting.
- Each shelf requires two pilot holes on both left and right sides; 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 holes total; check to avoid missing any.
Watch out
- Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from seating fully; drill slightly deeper to ensure.
- Prevent drilling completely through the shelf board by using tape depth stop.
- 7
Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board
≈ 20 minLay the first side board flat on the floor and stand six shelf boards in position aligning with markings. Temporarily fix with F clamps. Use a carpenter's square to check that side board and shelf boards are at right angles. For areas where the square cannot fit, check visually.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 7 / 20Tip
- Install shelf boards starting from the bottom tier for stability.
- One clamp per shelf board helps; six clamps in total make work quicker. If unavailable, proceed sequentially with two clamps.
Watch out
- Fixing at incorrect angles results in parallelogram-shaped assembly. Always verify right angles with a carpenter's square.
- If shelf boards protrude beyond side board edges, back panel installation will be impossible.
- 8
Screwing One Side Together
≈ 15 minScrew coarse-thread screws 38mm through pilot holes from outside side board into shelf board end grain. Use two screws per shelf per side, resulting in 12 screws for six shelves. Screw heads should be flush or recessed by 0.5mm relative to side board surface. Set electric screwdriver torque to medium; final tightening is done by hand turning 1/4 turn.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 8 / 20Tip
- Offset the two screws vertically for better pull-out strength.
- If visible screw holes are undesirable, they can be optionally filled with wood dowels later.
Watch out
- Over-tightening screws causes cracking in 19mm thick SPF lumber end grain; use medium torque.
- If screws go in crooked and protrude on opposite side, remove, fill hole with wood filler, and reposition screw elsewhere.
- 9
Preparing to Attach Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minStand the assembly with one side fixed and place the other side board on the opposite end of the shelf boards, aligning with previously marked positions. Temporarily clamp in place. Confirm the entire assembly is upright and check right angles.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 9 / 20Tip
- Two-person operation is recommended. One holds the assembly, another clamps for accuracy.
- The marking on the opposite side board was already done in Step 5; do not re-mark.
Watch out
- Attempting this alone risks shelf boards falling off and damaging the floor. Always have assistance or lean assembly against a wall.
- 10
Screwing Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minScrew through pilot holes on opposite side board from outside into shelf boards. Two screws per shelf on this side as well, total 12 screws. After this, main bookshelf structure is complete with both side boards and six shelf boards fixed.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 10 / 20Tip
- After both sides are fixed, use a level to check horizontal alignment of all shelves. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.
- Do not screw both sides simultaneously to avoid distortion. Fully screw one side before the other.
Watch out
- Simultaneously screwing both sides causes distortion. Proceed side-by-side sequentially only.
- 11
Checking Overall Level and Diagonal
≈ 15 minPlace completed assembly on the floor and check each shelf board's level with a level. Measure diagonals (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) with tape measure and confirm difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust, then add screws for fixing.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 11 / 20Tip
- Diagonal difference over 5mm means a parallelogram shape. Correct before attaching back panel.
- Back panel adds structural rigidity. Rectify all distortion before installing it.
Watch out
- Shelf boards sagging (drooping center) will worsen with book weight. Shelf lengths of 600mm are acceptable; consider reinforcement if exceeding 1000mm.
- 12
Preparing to Attach Back Panel
≈ 10 minPlace 4mm plywood back panel (800×400mm) on bookshelf back, aligning corners and confirming diagonals match the main body. Back panel attachment allows final correction of distortions. Temporarily tape back panel to body with masking tape.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 12 / 20Tip
- Back panel suppresses distortion and is important structurally. Installing slightly crooked reduces rigidity.
- 4mm plywood can be easily attached with a stapler. If using finishing nails, pre-drill pilot holes.
Watch out
- If back panel is larger than bookshelf, trim protruding parts. If smaller, keep uniform 5mm gap around edges.
- 13
Stapling Back Panel
≈ 20 minAttach the back panel to side boards and shelf boards using a stapler with staples approximately 15mm long or finishing nails. Space staples about every 100-150mm, including all edges and along shelf board positions. Start at four corners and proceed along diagonals to reduce distortion.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 13 / 20Tip
- Staplers cost around 1500-2500 yen at home centers and are faster than nails; worth investment for bookshelf projects.
- Mark shelf positions on back panel with pencil beforehand to avoid missing attachment at shelf locations.
Watch out
- Staples penetrating inside of the bookshelf can scratch books. 15mm staples are appropriate for 19mm thickness.
- Staple only along the four edges and at shelf positions; otherwise back panel will bow when loaded.
- 14
Preparing to Attach L-brackets
≈ 15 minPrepare 4 L-shaped metal brackets 50mm to attach at the upper rear left and right sides (2 per side) of the bookshelf. One side attaches to bookshelf top end, the other attaches to the wall. Locate wall studs using a stud sensor prior to fixings.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 14 / 20Tip
- Inexpensive stud sensors (~100 yen) have low accuracy; mid-range home center sensors (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
- Studs usually are spaced every 455mm. Once one stud is found, it's easier to estimate others' positions.
Watch out
- Screws into only gypsum board are insufficient for tip-over prevention; always fasten into studs.
- If bracket positioning doesn't align with studs, adjust bracket left-right to locate screw holes centrally over studs.
- 15
Attaching L-brackets to Bookshelf
≈ 10 minAttach 4 L-shaped brackets to the top outer side edges of bookshelf side boards. Use coarse-thread screws 38mm in the holes provided. Fix brackets flush with or up to 5mm away from side boards, projecting vertically to attach to the wall.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 15 / 20Tip
- Make sure the bent part of the bracket faces the wall, and screw holes face the bookshelf side.
- Use a level to prevent the bracket being mounted crooked as this creates gaps when fixing to the wall.
Watch out
- If bracket is installed crookedly, gaps appear against the wall, reducing effectiveness.
- 16
Placing Bookshelf and Wall Attachment
≈ 20 minCarry and stand the bookshelf in its designated location (two people recommended). Position close to the wall and drive coarse-thread screws 45-50mm into wall studs through the bracket holes using supplied or suitable screws. Secure all four points for full tip-over prevention.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 16 / 20Tip
- Wall screws must be 45-50mm to penetrate studs; 38mm screws are too short.
- Wall fixing is the most crucial step. Skimping risks injury or fatality in earthquakes.
Watch out
- Anchor bolts alone in gypsum board lack strength. Always screw into studs.
- If gap between bookshelf and wall exceeds 5mm, insert shims before fixing. Bracket will not function properly if left loose.
- 17
Cleaning Before Finishing
≈ 10 minClean the entire bookshelf with vacuum and dry cloth to thoroughly remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Quality of cleaning greatly affects finishing quality. Plywood back panel absorbs finish quickly; masking it prior is optional.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 17 / 20Tip
- Perfect cleaning follows three steps: dry wipe, wet wipe, dry wipe again.
Watch out
- Residual wood dust causes roughness in finish. Check under lighting.
- 18
First Application of Oil Stain
≈ 40 minApply oil stain such as Watco Oil or Kinura with a brush over the entire bookshelf. Sequence: outer side of side boards, shelf board fronts, shelf board undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. First coat uses about 60-70% of total amount due to high absorption.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 18 / 20Tip
- Stain application procedure is brush on, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off; unremoved excess leaves stickiness.
- Brushes 30-50mm wide work best for bookshelf applications; bigger brushes don't reach details well.
Watch out
- Failing to wipe off excess causes stickiness lasting over a week.
- Plywood back panel absorbs quickly, risking uneven color; apply thinly and wipe thoroughly.
- 19
Second Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 25 minAfter 24 hours drying of first coat, apply second coat at 1/3 to 1/2 volume of first coat. Also wipe off excess. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow complete drying for 24-48 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 19 / 20Tip
- Second coat corrects uneven color from first application. Apply thinly and evenly overall.
- If darker color is desired, a third coat can be applied.
Watch out
- Do not forget wiping off excess with second coat; thick application causes uneven finish.
- Keep drying area clean from dust and insects to avoid blemishes.
- 20
Completion, Use, and Inspection
≈ 15 minAfter 48 hours full oil drying, place books and start use. Load heavy books on lower shelves and lighter books higher for balance and stability. After one week of use, recheck screws and L-bracket tightness and tighten if needed.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 20 / 20Tip
- Concentrate heavy volumes (encyclopedias etc.) on bottom two shelves; use paperback and regular books on upper shelves to reduce top weight.
- Reapply oil stain every 3-5 years to restore sheen and protective effect.
Watch out
- Placing books before full 48 hour drying causes stain transfer onto books.
- Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy season. Bookshelf can warp from humidity.
Warnings
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
