Final Check of Materials and Tools
≈ 15 minPrepare 2 side boards (SPF lumber 1x10, 19×280×1800mm), 6 shelf boards (19×280×600mm), 1 plywood back panel (4mm thickness, 600×1800mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-brackets 50mm. Tools include electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or fine nails.
MeasureW 600 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 20Tip
- SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each board visually when purchasing; select those with warp within 1mm.
- L-brackets and screws are the lifeline for tipping prevention. Never omit them.
Watch out
- Check each SPF board for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using lumber warped over 1mm will distort the shelf boards.
- The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and easily bends. After cutting, immediately store it upright during handling.
- 2
Securing the Workspace
≈ 10 minEnsure a workspace where a 1800mm tall bookshelf can stand during assembly. Requires ceiling height over 2200mm and floor space about 1500×1200mm. Lay a blue sheet and support long materials with two sawhorses.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 2 / 20Tip
- Assemble the bookshelf lying on the floor and stand it up only at the finishing step. Can work even in a small room.
Watch out
- It is difficult for one person to stand up the assembled bookshelf. Two people are safer.
- If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing. Confirm height beforehand.
- 3
Creating the Cut List and Requesting Cuts
≈ 20 minSubmit a cut list for two side boards (1800mm), six shelf boards (600mm), and the back panel (600×1800mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support the 1800mm boards on two sawhorses and cut by pulling the saw. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 3 / 20Tip
- Each cut costs 30-50 yen. Requesting all cuts costs about 1000 yen but reduces time from 30 minutes to immediate.
- Six shelf boards have the same dimensions; bundling them and cutting all at once yields highest accuracy.
Watch out
- 19mm thick SPF lumber tends to warp even with straight cuts. Use guides to cut straight.
- 4mm plywood is soft and will warp if not supported underneath when cutting.
- 4
Sanding All Parts (#120 → #240)
≈ 40 minSand all parts starting with #120 grit, finishing with #240 grit. Pay special attention to shelf support faces on side boards, upper and lower surfaces and edges (end grain) of shelf boards. Rounding shelf edges where hands touch makes handling easier. Clean all wood dust completely with a vacuum after sanding.
Sand#120SandSTEP 4 / 20Tip
- Sanding shelf board surfaces smooth helps books slide in and out smoothly.
- End grains have raised fibers; sand carefully starting from #120 grit.
Watch out
- SPF lumber is soft; over-sanding may alter dimensions. Use #120 primarily, #240 only for finishing.
- Excessively rounding corners looks clumsy; limit radius to about 2mm.
- 5
Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards
≈ 15 minPlace two side boards side by side and mark shelf positions for 6 shelves with pencil. Shelf spacing is typically 300mm evenly from bottom up (total 1800mm), or add wider spacing for decoration at top according to design. Align both side boards exactly and mark simultaneously.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 5 / 20Tip
- Clamp the two boards together before marking to ensure identical shelf positions on both sides.
- Use A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and paperback (150mm) book heights to decide shelf spacing for practical storage.
Watch out
- If shelf positions differ on the two sides, shelves will tilt. Always clamp and mark simultaneously.
- Don’t forget to account for the 19mm thick shelf boards when measuring spacing; otherwise the real space becomes narrower.
- 6
Preparing Pilot Holes
≈ 20 minDrill φ3mm pilot holes at marked positions on side boards. Drill from the side board's outside towards the shelf board end grain so holes penetrate side boards and enter shelf boards 10mm deep (total 29mm). Use masking tape on drill bit for depth marking.
Drill a holeφ3mmDrillSTEP 6 / 20Tip
- φ3mm pilot holes are 70% of the 4.2mm screw shaft diameter, preventing wood splitting reliably.
- Each shelf has 2 pilot holes on each side board; total 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 holes. Check that none are missed.
Watch out
- If pilot holes are too shallow, screws won’t fully seat. Drill slightly deeper for safety.
- Avoid drilling through the shelf board entirely by using tape depth stops on bit.
- 7
Temporary Fixing of Shelf Boards to One Side Board
≈ 20 minLay one side board flat on the floor and stand shelf boards on the marked positions. Temporarily fix with F-type clamps, confirm right angle between side board and shelf boards using carpenter’s square, or visually where the square won’t fit.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 7 / 20Tip
- When standing shelves, proceed from bottom up for stability.
- Each shelf board ideally has its own clamp; 6 clamps ease the process, but use 2 and fix sequentially if limited.
Watch out
- Fixing without confirming right angles results in parallelogram distortion. Always check with square.
- If shelves protrude past side board edges, back panel won’t fit later.
- 8
Screwing Shelf Boards to One Side Board
≈ 15 minDrive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from side board outside to shelf board end. Use 2 screws per location, 6 shelves total 12 screws. Screw heads should be flush with or sunk 0.5mm below side board surface. Set impact driver torque medium; final tightening done by hand with 1/4 turn.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 8 / 20Tip
- Offset each pair of screws slightly vertically to increase withdrawal strength.
- If screw heads are visible, optionally fill holes later with wood dowels to hide.
Watch out
- Over-tightening screws on 19mm SPF can split wood end grain. Use medium torque.
- If screw goes in crooked and protrudes through shelf board back, remove screw, fill hole with wood putty, and reposition screw.
- 9
Preparation to Attach Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minStand assembly with one side board attached. Place the other side board on opposite shelf ends aligned to pencil marks. Clamp temporarily. Check vertical and square alignment while assembly is standing upright.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 9 / 20Tip
- Two-person work recommended: one supports assembly, one clamps to ensure accuracy.
- Opposite side board’s markings were made before, no need to re-mark.
Watch out
- Forcing this step alone may cause shelves to fall and drop. Always two persons or lean on a wall.
- 10
Screwing Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minDrive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from opposite side board outside. Two screws per point, 6 shelves total 12 screws. This fixed both side boards and all shelves securely, completing main bookshelf structure.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 10 / 20Tip
- After fixing both sides, check all shelves with level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.
Watch out
- Driving screws on both sides at once causes distortion. Fix one side completely before the other.
- 11
Check Overall Level and Diagonal
≈ 15 minPlace assembled bookshelf on floor. Check each shelf level with level tool. Measure diagonal distances (left top to right bottom and right top to left bottom) with measuring tape; difference should be within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust, then add screws.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 11 / 20Tip
- Diagonal difference over 5mm means parallelogram shape. Correct before attaching back panel.
- Bookshelves gain rigidity from back panel; fix all distortions before installing back.
Watch out
- Shelf sagging (center dropping) worsens with books. 600mm shelf length acceptable, for 1000mm+ consider reinforcement.
- 12
Preparation to Attach Back Panel
≈ 10 minPlace 4mm plywood back panel on back, align all corners and ensure diagonals match assembled bookshelf (back panel corrects final distortion). Temporarily fix back panel lightly to bookshelf with masking tape.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 12 / 20Tip
- Back panel is essential for rigidity. Attaching slightly skewed reduces strength.
- 4mm plywood can be fastened simply with a stapler. If using fine nails, drill pilot holes first.
Watch out
- If back panel is larger than bookshelf, trim protrusions. If smaller, keep even 5mm gaps around edges.
- 13
Staple Fixing the Back Panel
≈ 20 minFix back panel to side and shelf boards using a stapler with about 15mm staples or fine nails. Staple every 100-150mm along edges and shelf board positions. Start from all four corners and place staples along diagonal lines to reduce distortion.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 13 / 20Tip
- Staplers cost around 1500-2500 yen at home centers and allow faster work than nails; good investment for making bookshelves.
- Mark shelf positions on back panel with pencil before stapling to prevent omissions.
Watch out
- Staples protruding inside can damage books. 15mm staple length is appropriate for 19mm thickness.
- If staples are only on edges and not on shelf board positions, back panel may warp when shelves sag.
- 14
Preparation to Attach L-brackets
≈ 15 minAttach four 50mm L-brackets: two on the top rear left and two on the top rear right of bookshelf. One side fixed to top edge of bookshelf, the other to wall. Use a stud finder to locate studs behind wall where brackets will be fixed.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 14 / 20Tip
- Cheap stud finders from 100 yen stores have low accuracy. Home center models (1000-2000 yen) recommended.
- Studs are usually spaced at 455mm centers. Once one stud is found, predict nearby ones.
Watch out
- Drywall alone won’t hold screws securely; brackets must be screwed into studs to prevent tipping.
- If bracket position doesn’t align with a stud, adjust bracket left or right until screws hit stud.
- 15
Attaching L-brackets to Bookshelf
≈ 10 minAttach four L-brackets to outside of top side boards using 38mm coarse-thread screws into pre-drilled holes. Brackets should be flush or up to 5mm away from side board surface, extending perpendicular to the wall.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 15 / 20Tip
- Ensure brackets are installed with bent portion facing wall and screw holes facing bookshelf.
Watch out
- If brackets are installed crookedly, gaps appear between wall and bracket during fixing. Use level to check alignment.
- 16
Bookshelf Installation and Wall Fixing
≈ 20 minWith two people, carry bookshelf to installation location and place flush to wall. Drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws through wall-side holes of L-brackets into studs to firmly fix bookshelf and prevent tipping.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 16 / 20Tip
- 38mm screws are too short for wall studs; use 45-50mm screws for studs.
- Wall fixing is the most critical step; never skip or weaken it to prevent injury or fatal accidents during earthquakes.
Watch out
- Drywall anchors alone lack sufficient strength; always screw into studs.
- If gap between wall and bookshelf is over 5mm, insert shims before fixing; floating brackets lose effectiveness.
- 17
Cleaning Before Painting
≈ 10 minThoroughly remove all wood dust, oil, and fingerprints by vacuuming and wiping bookshelf with a dry cloth before finishing. Finish quality greatly depends on cleaning. Optionally, mask plywood back panel as it absorbs paint quickly.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 17 / 20Tip
- Three-step wiping: dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe gives perfect cleaning before painting.
Watch out
- Remaining wood dust causes rough paint surfaces. Use lighting to check.
- 18
First Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 40 minApply oil stain (like Watco Oil or Kinura) with brush over entire bookshelf: side board exterior, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. First coat uses about 60-70% of total amount due to absorption.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 18 / 20Tip
- Oil stain process: brush on → wait 10-15 minutes → wipe off excess. Not wiping leaves sticky residue.
- Use 30-50mm wide brush optimal for bookshelf work; larger brushes don’t reach details.
Watch out
- Forgetting to wipe leaves sticky surface for over a week. Always wipe off thoroughly.
- Plywood back panel absorbs stain quickly and unevenly; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
- 19
Second Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 25 minAfter the first coat dries 24 hours, apply a second coat with about one-third to half the amount of the first. Wipe off excess again. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 19 / 20Tip
- Second coat corrects color unevenness from first. Apply evenly and thinly.
- Add a third coat if deeper color desired.
Watch out
- Do not forget to wipe off excess on second coat; thick layers cause blotches.
- Dry indoors during drying to avoid dust and insects adhering.
- 20
Completion, Start Use, and Inspection
≈ 15 minAfter oil is fully dried (48 hours), place books and start use. Load heavy books on bottom shelves and lighter books above for balance and stability. After one week of use, recheck screws and L-bracket fixing; tighten if needed.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 20 / 20Tip
- Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) on bottom two shelves; keep upper shelves light with paperbacks.
- Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.
Watch out
- Putting books on before full dry transfers oil to books. Wait at least 48 hours.
- Books absorb moisture; place dehumidifiers during rainy season to prevent bookshelf warping.
Warnings
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
