Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x8 (19×200×1800mm), 6 shelf boards (19×200×600mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (600×1800mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-shaped brackets 50mm. Tools include electric driver, saw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, tack gun or small nails.

    Measure
    W 600 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each piece visually at purchase and select those with warp within 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are lifelines for overturn prevention. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using lumber warped over 1mm will distort shelf boards.
    • 4mm plywood back panel is thin and easy to break when moved. Manage it standing up immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Securing Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Ensure a workspace where the 1800mm height bookshelf can stand and be worked on. Ceiling height of 2200mm or more and floor area of about 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay a blue sheet and support long boards with two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is performed laying the bookshelf on the floor; standing it up is the final step. Assembly possible even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Raising the assembled bookshelf alone is difficult. Two-person work is safer.
    • If ceiling height is under 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing up. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Create Cut List and Request Cutting

    ≈ 20 min

Submit cut list for 2 side boards (1800mm), 6 shelf boards (600mm), and one back panel (600×1800mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support the long pieces with two sawhorses and cut by pulling the saw. Aim for cutting accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting cost is 30-50 yen per cut. Requesting all cuts costs about 1000 yen, reducing wait time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Bundle 6 shelf boards of the same size and cut them at once for best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF lumber easily warps even in straight cuts. Use a guide to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and will deform if not supported underneath during cutting.
  4. 4

Sanding All Materials (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all materials first with #120 and then with #240 sandpaper. Focus especially on shelf support surfaces of side boards, top and bottom surfaces of shelf boards, and cut ends. Rounding shelf edges improves handling. After sanding, vacuum all dust thoroughly.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smoother shelf surfaces make inserting and removing books easier.
    • Cut ends have raised fibers and require careful sanding starting with #120.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding distorts dimensions. Use #120 primarily and #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding corners looks clumsy; limit rounding to approximately 2mm radius.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side boards side by side and mark shelf positions for 6 shelves with a pencil. Shelf spacing can be uniform 300mm from bottom up (using the full 1800mm for six shelves) or designed with wider spaces at the top for display. Mark both boards simultaneously ensuring perfectly matching positions.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamping the two side boards together before marking ensures exactly matching shelf positions.
    • Use standard book sizes such as A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and Bunko size (150mm) to determine shelf spacing for easy storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions on sides do not match, shelves will be installed crooked. Simultaneous marking while clamped is mandatory.
    • Ignoring the 19mm shelf board thickness in spacing calculation results in narrower actual spacing.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked locations. Drill from outside of side board toward shelf board edges, passing through the side board (19mm) and into the shelf board by 10mm, total 29mm depth. Use masking tape as a depth stop.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole diameter is about 70% of 4.2mm coarse-thread screw shaft, reliably preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf requires 2 screws on left and right side boards, total 6 shelves × 4 screws = 24 holes. Check for no omissions.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from fully seating; drill slightly deeper for security.
    • Do not drill through the opposite side of the shelf board; use tape for depth control.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor. Stand up the six shelf boards aligned to markings and clamp temporarily with F clamps. Use a carpenter's square to confirm right angles between shelf boards and side board. Visually confirm those areas where the square cannot fit.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Install shelf boards starting from the bottom for stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board is ideal. Having six clamps facilitates work; if only two clamps are available, proceed sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing at a tilted angle results in a parallelogram shape overall. Always confirm right angles with the square.
    • If shelf boards extend beyond side board edges, the back panel cannot be installed later.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outer side board into the shelf board ends. Use two screws per shelf position, total 12 screws for 6 shelves. Screw heads should be flush with or recessed 0.5mm below side board surface. Use medium torque with the impact driver; finish tightening by hand turning a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset the two screws slightly vertically for enhanced pull-out strength.
    • If screw heads are visible, later fill with wood dowel (optional).

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening can split 19mm thick SPF lumber ends; use medium torque.
    • Screws entering at a slant and protruding on the other side should be removed, filled with wood filler, and repositioned.
  9. 9

Preparation for Installing Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly fixed on one side, and position the second side board on the opposite side. Align the opposite shelf board ends to side board markings and clamp temporarily. Confirm right angles while the assembly is standing.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended for two-person operation: one holds and the other clamps for accuracy.
    • Opposite side board markings were made initially; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this alone may cause shelves to drop and damage the floor. Always work with two people or lean the assembly against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws from the opposite side board outer face through pilot holes into shelf boards. Two screws per shelf per side, total 12 screws. This finalizes fixing side boards and shelves, completing main structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, use a level to check horizontal alignment of all shelves. If any are tilted, loosen screws and adjust.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously may distort the frame. Complete one side fully before the other.
  11. 11

Check Overall Level and Diagonal Lines

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf flat on the floor. Use a level to check horizontal shelf alignment. Measure diagonal distances frontally between left top to right bottom and right top to left bottom corners, ensuring difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust; add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • A diagonal difference over 5mm means a parallelogram shape. Correct before attaching back panel.
    • Bookshelf rigidity improves with back panel. Correct distortions before installing it.

    Watch out

    • Shelves sagging (center lowering) worsens under book weight. 600mm shelf length is acceptable; over 1000mm needs reinforcement consideration.
  12. 12

    Preparation for Back Panel Installation

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back panel (600×1800mm) against the rear of the bookshelf frame. Align corners and confirm diagonal lengths match the frame (attaching back panel can correct final distortions). Fix panel lightly with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is key structural element preventing distortion. Slightly crooked installation reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood can be stapled easily; if nailing with small nails, drill pilot holes first.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than frame, trim protruding parts. If smaller, maintain uniform gap within 5mm at edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling the Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Fasten the back panel to side boards and shelves using a stapler (15mm staples) or small nails. Space fasteners every 100-150mm around edges and at shelf positions. Start fastening at corners and along diagonals to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler costs 1500-2500 yen at home centers and is faster than nails; worthwhile investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions on back panel with pencil before fastening to avoid missing shelf contacts.

    Watch out

    • Staples piercing through inside can damage books; 15mm staples are appropriate for 19mm thickness.
    • Fasten around all edges and shelf positions to prevent back panel detachment if bowed.
  14. 14

    Preparation for L-shaped Bracket Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-shaped brackets at the top rear of the bookshelf, two per side. Position one side on bookshelf top ends and the other side for wall fixing. Confirm wall stud location with a stud finder.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud finders from 100 yen shops have low accuracy. Home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Wall studs are usually spaced 455mm center to center. Locating one helps estimate others.

    Watch out

    • If wall face is only drywall where screws cannot hold, it does not prevent overturning; always fix to studs.
    • If bracket positions don't align with studs, shift bracket left or right to center screws in studs.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-shaped Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach the four L-shaped brackets to the outer faces of side boards at top rear using 38mm coarse-thread screws into the bracket's screw holes. Fix brackets flush with or within 5mm from side board surface. The bracket arm should protrude perpendicular to the wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket bend faces the wall and screw holes face the bookshelf for correct orientation.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are installed crookedly, gaps will form between bracket and wall when fixed. Confirm horizontal alignment with a level.
  16. 16

    Bookshelf Placement and Wall Fixing

    ≈ 20 min

Move the bookshelf to installation site standing (two people recommended). Place tight against wall. Drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (included or separately purchased) through the bracket's wall side screw holes into wall studs at all four points to complete overturn prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Wall screws should be longer than 38mm to reach studs; use 45-50mm screws.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step for safety; do not skip or skimp.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone are insufficient strength; always screw into studs.
    • If gap between wall and bookshelf is over 5mm, shim before tightening; otherwise brackets will be ineffective.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Clean entire bookshelf with vacuum and dry cloth to completely remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality before painting greatly affects finish quality. Plywood back panel absorbs paint quickly; masking in advance is optional.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • For perfect cleaning before painting, wipe dry cloth, then wet cloth, then dry cloth again in three steps.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough painted surface. Shine light to check.
  18. 18

First Coat of Oil Stain Application

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (Watco Oil, Kinura, etc.) over entire bookshelf with brush. Apply in order: outside of side boards, shelf board top surfaces, shelf board undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total quantity for the first coat.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Apply oil stain, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off; failing to wipe leaves sticky residue.
    • Brush width 30-50mm is ideal for bookshelf work; too wide won't reach details.

    Watch out

    • Not wiping off causes tackiness lasting over a week; always wipe.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and often uneven; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying of first coat, apply the second coat with about one-third to half the first coat amount. Remember to wipe off. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Full drying takes 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects unevenness from the first coat. Apply thin and evenly.
    • Add a third coat if deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not neglect wiping on second coat; thick application causes unevenness.
    • During drying, keep indoors away from dust and insects.
  20. 20

    Completion, Use and Inspections

    ≈ 15 min

After complete oil drying (48 hours), place books and start use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and light books on upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week of use, check screws and L-bracket attachments; retighten if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) on bottom two shelves; keep upper shelves for light books like paperbacks.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing may transfer oil to books; always wait 48 hours or more.
    • Books absorb moisture; put dehumidifiers during rainy season. Bookshelf can warp from humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting
