Final check of parts and tools
≈ 15 minPrepare two side boards (SPF lumber 1x10, 19×250×900mm), six shelf boards (19×250×900mm), one 4mm plywood back board (900×900mm), twenty-four 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-brackets. Tools include electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush with paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.
MeasureW 900 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 20Tip
- SPF lumber tends to warp; inspect each piece visually upon purchase and select those with warp within 1mm.
- L-brackets and screws are lifelines for tipping prevention. Do not omit.
Watch out
- Check each SPF board for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped over 1mm will distort shelves.
- The 4mm plywood back board is thin and easy to break during movement; store upright immediately after cutting.
- 2
Securing the workspace
≈ 10 minSecure a workspace where you can stand the 900mm tall bookshelf upright. A ceiling height over 2200mm and floor area around 1500×1200mm is comfortable. Lay a blue sheet and support long pieces on two saw horses.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 2 / 20Tip
- Assemble the bookshelf lying on the floor; stand it up only at the final step. Works even in small rooms.
Watch out
- It is difficult to stand the assembled bookshelf alone; two people for safety.
- Ceiling heights below 2000mm may cause the bookshelf to hit the ceiling when standing upright; confirm beforehand.
- 3
Creating cut list and requesting cuts
≈ 20 minSubmit a cut list to the home center for two side boards (900mm), six shelf boards (900mm), and one back board (900×900mm). If cutting yourself, support long pieces on two saw horses and perform pull cuts. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 3 / 20Tip
- Cutting fees run 30-50 yen per cut. Requesting all cuts costs around 1000 yen and reduces time from 30 minutes to immediate.
- Bundle the six shelf boards and cut them at once for best accuracy.
Watch out
- 19mm thick SPF lumber warps easily even with straight cuts; use guides for straight cutting.
- 4mm plywood is soft and warps if unsupported during cutting; support it underneath.
- 4
Sanding all parts (#120 then #240)
≈ 40 minSand all parts starting with #120 then finishing with #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to shelf support faces of side boards, top and bottom surfaces of shelf boards, and cut edges. Rounding shelf edges where hands touch makes handling easier. Vacuum thoroughly after sanding to remove sawdust.
Sand#120SandSTEP 4 / 20Tip
- A smooth shelf surface facilitates easy book insertion and removal.
- Cut edges tend to raise fibers; sand them carefully starting with #120 grit.
Watch out
- SPF lumber is soft; avoid oversanding which alters dimensions. Use #120 primarily; #240 for finishing only.
- Rounding corners excessively looks clumsy; keep radius around 2mm.
- 5
Marking shelf positions on side boards
≈ 15 minPlace the two side boards together and mark with pencil the six shelf positions. Shelf spacing from bottom is 300mm each, covering 1800mm total, or adjust top spacing for display as designed. Align the two side boards perfectly and mark simultaneously.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 5 / 20Tip
- Clamp the two side boards together to ensure identical shelf positions.
- Use heights of A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and paperback (150mm) books as reference when setting shelf spacing.
Watch out
- Misaligned shelf markings cause shelves to be installed slanting; simultaneous marking with boards clamped is required.
- Forgetting 19mm shelf thickness in spacing calculations narrows real shelf clearance.
- 6
Preparing pilot holes
≈ 20 minDrill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions, drilling from the outside of the side board into the end grain of the shelf board. Use masking tape on the bit to mark depth. Drill through the 19mm board plus 10mm into the shelf board for a total of 29mm depth.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 6 / 20Tip
- 3mm pilot hole diameter corresponds to about 70% of the 4.2mm shaft of 38mm coarse-thread screws, effectively preventing wood splitting.
- Each shelf requires 2 pilot holes on both left and right side boards, totaling 24 holes; check carefully to avoid omissions.
Watch out
- Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from seating fully; drill slightly deeper than measured.
- Avoid drilling all the way through to the opposite side of the shelf board; use tape as depth stop.
- 7
Temporarily fixing shelves to one side board
≈ 20 minLay one side board flat on the floor and position the six shelves standing along the marked locations. Temporarily fix each shelf with F-clamps. Use a carpenter's square to confirm shelves are set at right angles to the side board. Visually verify parts where the square cannot fit.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 7 / 20Tip
- Starting from the bottom shelf builds stability.
- One clamp per shelf is ideal. If only two clamps are available, fix shelves sequentially.
Watch out
- Securing with incorrect right angles distorts assembly into a parallelogram; always check with square.
- If shelves protrude beyond the side board edges, the back board cannot be attached later.
- 8
Screwing one side
≈ 15 minDrive 38mm coarse-thread screws through the pilot holes from the outside of the side board into the shelf ends: two screws per location, six levels totaling twelve screws. Make screw heads flush or recessed 0.5mm into the side board surface. Use medium torque on the impact driver and finish by hand tightening one-quarter turn.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 8 / 20Tip
- Offsetting the two screws slightly vertically improves pullout strength.
- If screw heads remain visible, they can be covered later with wood dowels (optional).
Watch out
- Over-tightening can split 19mm thick SPF end grain; stop at medium torque.
- If screws go in crooked and protrude on the opposite side, remove, fill with wood putty, and re-screw in another location.
- 9
Preparing to attach the other side board
≈ 15 minStand the assembly with one side fixed, and place the other side board onto the opposite shelf ends aligning marks on it. Temporarily clamp and check right angles with the assembly upright.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 9 / 20Tip
- Two-person work is recommended: one to hold steady and one to clamp.
- The second side board markings were made previously; do not re-mark.
Watch out
- Attempting this step alone risks shelves dropping and damage; always work with two people or lean assembly against a wall securely.
- 10
Screwing the opposite side
≈ 15 minDrive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the second side board into shelf ends: two screws per location, six levels totaling twelve screws. With both sides secured, the main bookshelf structure is complete.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 10 / 20Tip
- After securing both sides, check shelf levels with a level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen and adjust screws as needed.
Watch out
- Driving screws simultaneously on both sides causes distortion; complete one side first then the other.
- 11
Checking overall level and diagonal measurements
≈ 15 minPlace completed assembly on the floor and check each shelf's level with a level. Measure diagonals front-on (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) with a tape measure and confirm difference is within 5mm. Adjust with clamps and add screws if distorted.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 11 / 20Tip
- Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion; correct before attaching the back board.
- The back board increases rigidity; correct distortion before installation.
Watch out
- Shelf sagging in the center worsens under book weight. Shelf length around 600mm is acceptable; consider reinforcement if longer than 1000mm.
- 12
Preparing to attach back board
≈ 10 minPosition the 4mm plywood back board against the bookshelf rear. Align corners and confirm diagonals of back board and frame match. Lightly tape the back board in place. The back board will correct final warping.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 12 / 20Tip
- The back board is an important part to prevent assembly distortion; slight misalignment reduces rigidity.
- Stapling is easy; if using nails, drill pilot holes first.
Watch out
- If the back board is larger than the assembly, cut excess off; if smaller, leave uniform gaps under 5mm on edges.
- 13
Stapling the back board
≈ 20 minAttach back board to side and shelf boards using a stapler (staples about 15mm) or small nails every 100-150mm around the perimeter and along shelf positions. Start from corners and work along diagonals to minimize distortion.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 13 / 20Tip
- Staplers cost 1500-2500 yen at home centers and speed installation compared to nails; worthwhile investment for bookshelf building.
- Mark shelf positions on back board with pencil before stapling to avoid missing fixing points.
Watch out
- Staples protruding inside damage books; 15mm length is appropriate for 19mm board thickness.
- Stapling only around edges without shelf positions leaves the back board unsupported and prone to warping.
- 14
Preparing L-bracket installation
≈ 15 minAttach four 50mm L-brackets to the top rear of the bookshelf; two on each side. One bracket side fixes on bookshelf top edge, the other on the wall. Use stud finder to check wall stud positions.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 14 / 20Tip
- Low-cost stud finders from 100 yen shops have poor accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
- Wall studs are usually spaced at 455mm intervals; after finding one, estimating adjacent studs is easier.
Watch out
- Drywall only cannot hold screws and will not prevent tipping; always screw into studs.
- If bracket positions don't line up with studs, adjust brackets left or right to center screws on studs.
- 15
Attaching L-brackets to bookshelf
≈ 10 minFix the four L-brackets to the outside of top side boards using 38mm coarse-thread screws through the bracket holes. Brackets should be flush with the side board or up to 5mm offset, projecting perpendicular to the wall side.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 15 / 20Tip
- Ensure bracket bend is oriented toward the wall side, screw holes facing bookshelf.
- Correct orientation is important for proper fit.
Watch out
- Misaligned brackets create gaps at the wall when mounting; check with a level.
- 16
Placing bookshelf and securing to wall
≈ 20 minCarry the bookshelf upright to its installation location (two people recommended). Place tightly against the wall and screw through the L-bracket holes into wall studs using 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (included or purchased separately). Secure all four points to complete tipping prevention.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 16 / 20Tip
- Use screws 45-50mm long on the wall side to penetrate studs; 38mm is too short.
- Wall mounting is the most important step to prevent injury or death in earthquakes; do not skip.
Watch out
- Drywall anchors alone are insufficient for strength; always screw into studs.
- If gap between wall and bookshelf exceeds 5mm, shim before fastening; unsecured brackets are ineffective.
- 17
Cleaning before finishing
≈ 10 minVacuum the entire bookshelf and wipe with a dry cloth to completely remove sawdust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality greatly affects finish outcome. The plywood back board absorbs finish quickly; optional masking before finishing is possible.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 17 / 20Tip
- Wipe cloth before finishing using sequence: dry wipe, damp wipe, dry wipe for perfect cleaning.
Watch out
- Residual sawdust causes roughness on finish surface; check with lighting.
- 18
Applying first coat of oil stain
≈ 40 minBrush oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil or Kinura) evenly over all surfaces: outside side boards, shelf tops, shelf insides, then back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total quantity for first coat, as absorption is high.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 18 / 20Tip
- Apply oil stain, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off excess; do not leave sticky.
- Use a 30-50mm brush ideal for bookshelf work; too large brushes can't reach finer areas.
Watch out
- Failing to wipe off excess leaves stickiness for over a week; always wipe.
- Plywood back boards absorb quickly and unevenly; apply thinly and wipe thoroughly.
- 19
Applying second coat of oil stain
≈ 25 minAfter drying 24 hours post first coat, apply second coat with roughly 30-50% of amount used in first coat. Wipe off excess as before. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Fully dry 24-48 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 19 / 20Tip
- Second coat corrects color unevenness from first coat; apply thin and even.
- Add a third coat if color deepening is desired.
Watch out
- Do not forget wiping after second coat; thick application causes unevenness.
- Keep indoors during drying to avoid dust and insects.
- 20
Completion, use, and inspection
≈ 15 minAfter full drying of oil finish (48 hours), arrange books and start use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter books higher for stability. After one week of use, recheck screw tightness and L-bracket fixing; retighten if necessary.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 20 / 20Tip
- Place heavy books (e.g., encyclopedias) on the bottom two shelves.
- Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.
Watch out
- Placing books immediately after completion causes oil transfer; wait at least 48 hours.
- Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers in rainy seasons to prevent bookshelf warping due to moisture.
Warnings
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
