Final Check of Parts and Tools
≈ 15 minPrepare two side boards made of SPF lumber 1x8 (19×150×500mm), six shelf boards (19×150×400mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (400×500mm), sixteen coarse-thread screws 38mm, and four L-shaped brackets 50mm. Tools include electric driver, saw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.
MeasureW 400 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 20Tip
- SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each board visually upon purchase and select those with warp less than 1mm.
- L-shaped brackets and screws are essential for tipping prevention; never omit them.
Watch out
- Check each SPF board for warping, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped over 1mm causes shelf distortion.
- 4mm plywood back panel is thin and prone to break during handling. After cutting, store it standing up immediately.
- 2
Securing Workspace
≈ 10 minPrepare a workspace where the bookshelf standing 500mm high can be assembled. Ensure ceiling height is over 2200mm and floor area about 1500×1200mm. Lay a blue sheet and support long pieces with two sawhorses.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 2 / 20Tip
- Assemble on the floor lying flat and stand the bookshelf up only at the final stage. This allows work in small rooms.
Watch out
- Standing the assembled bookshelf upright alone is difficult. Two-person work is safer.
- If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing upright; check beforehand.
- 3
Creating Cut List and Ordering Cuts
≈ 20 minSubmit a cut list to the home center for two side boards (500mm), six shelf boards (400mm), and one back panel (400×500mm). If cutting yourself, support the long boards on two sawhorses and make pull cuts. Aim for cutting accuracy within ±2mm.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 3 / 20Tip
- Cutting costs 30-50 yen per cut. Full cutting service costs about 1000 yen and reduces cutting time from 30 minutes to immediate.
- Since all six shelf boards have the same dimensions, bundling and cutting them at once yields best accuracy.
Watch out
- 19mm thick SPF lumber warps easily even when cut straight. Use a guide to cut straight.
- The 4mm plywood is soft and deforms if unsupported from below when cutting.
- 4
Sanding All Parts (#120 then #240)
≈ 40 minSand all parts first with #120 grit then with #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces on side boards, upper and lower faces of shelf boards, and cut ends. Rounding the shelf edges that will be touched makes handling easier. Vacuum all wood dust completely after sanding.
Sand#120SandSTEP 4 / 20Tip
- A smooth shelf surface facilitates smooth insertion and removal of books.
- Cut edges (end grain) have raised fibers, so sand carefully starting with #120.
Watch out
- SPF lumber is soft; over-sanding causes dimensional errors. Use #120 grit mainly, #240 only for finishing.
- Rounding corners too much results in clumsy appearance; keep rounding to about 2mm radius.
- 5
Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards
≈ 15 minPlace the two side boards side by side, marking the fixed positions for six shelves with a pencil. Shelf spacing can be 300mm each for six shelves from the bottom (total 1800mm) or wider spacing at the top for decoration, according to design. Align both side boards perfectly and mark simultaneously.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 5 / 20Tip
- Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure perfectly matched shelf positions.
- Use standard heights such as A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and paperback size (150mm) as references for shelf spacing to ease storage.
Watch out
- If shelf positions differ between sides, shelves will be skewed. Mark both boards together while clamped.
- Remember shelf board thickness 19mm in spacing calculations; otherwise, real space will be reduced.
- 6
Preparing Pilot Holes
≈ 20 minDrill 3mm diameter pilot holes at the marked positions. Drill from the outside of the side board through toward the shelf board edge, passing through the 19mm side board and into the shelf board 10mm deep (total 29mm). Mark depth with masking tape on the drill bit.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 6 / 20Tip
- 3mm pilot hole diameter is about 70% of the 4.2mm coarse-thread screw shank to reliably prevent wood splitting.
- Each shelf requires two screws on each side board; for six shelves that is 24 pilot holes in total. Check carefully for omissions.
Watch out
- If pilot hole is not deep enough, screws may not go in fully. Drill slightly deeper than planned to be confident.
- Do not drill through the shelf board to the opposite side; use tape as a depth stop.
- 7
Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board
≈ 20 minLay one side board flat on the floor; stand six shelf boards at the marked positions. Temporarily fix with F clamps and check that side board and shelf boards form right angles using a carpenter's square. For areas where the square cannot fit, check visually.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 7 / 20Tip
- Start fixing shelf boards from the bottom upward for stability.
- Ideally use one clamp per shelf board; six clamps make work easier, but if unavailable use two and fix sequentially.
Watch out
- If right angle is off during fixing, the entire bookshelf will become parallelogram-shaped. Confirm with carpenter's square.
- If shelf boards protrude beyond side board edges, the back panel cannot be attached later.
- 8
Driving Screws on One Side
≈ 15 minDrive sixteen coarse-thread 38mm screws through pilot holes from outside the side board into shelf boards—two screws per location for six shelves, total of 12 screws. Screw heads should be flush or recessed 0.5mm. Use medium torque on impact driver and finalize tightening by hand with quarter turn.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 8 / 20Tip
- Slightly offset the two screws vertically at each position to increase withdrawal strength.
- If screw heads are noticeable, cover with wooden dowels later (optional).
Watch out
- Over-tightening screws may split 19mm thick SPF lumber end grain. Stop at medium torque.
- If screws enter at an angle and protrude on the opposite side, remove, fill hole with wood filler, and reinstall screws at another position.
- 9
Preparing Attachment of Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minStand the side board fixed with shelf boards upright and position the other side board on the opposite shelf board ends, aligning with pencil marks. Temporarily fix with clamps. Confirm right angle in the fully upright assembly.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 9 / 20Tip
- This step is recommended to be done with two people; one holds the bookshelf steady while the other clamps.
- Opposite side board marks are made in Step 5; do not re-mark.
Watch out
- Working alone may cause shelves to fall and damage the floor. Always use two people or support against a wall.
- 10
Driving Screws on the Opposite Side
≈ 15 minDrive coarse-thread 38mm screws through pilot holes from outside the opposite side board into shelf boards. Two screws per shelf position for six shelves, total 12 screws. With this, the main bookshelf structure is complete by securing two side boards and six shelf boards.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 10 / 20Tip
- After fixing both sides, check each shelf board with a level; if any tilts, loosen screws and adjust.
Watch out
- Do not screw both sides simultaneously as it causes distortion. Complete all screws on one side before the other.
- 11
Overall Level and Diagonal Measurement Check
≈ 15 minPlace the assembly on the floor and check the shelf boards horizontally with a level. Measure the two diagonals (top left to bottom right, top right to bottom left) with a tape measure, verifying they differ by no more than 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust, then secure additionally with screws.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 11 / 20Tip
- Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape. Correct before attaching back panel.
- Back panel installation increases rigidity. Fix any distortion before panel attachment.
Watch out
- Shelf board sagging (downward deflection at center) will worsen with book weight. Shelf length up to 600mm is acceptable; for over 1000mm consider reinforcement.
- 12
Preparation for Back Panel Attachment
≈ 10 minPosition the 4mm plywood back panel (400×500mm) on the bookshelf's rear. Align all corners and ensure diagonals match the bookshelf to allow final distortion correction. Temporarily fix with masking tape.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 12 / 20Tip
- Back panel is a critical part for preventing distortion; mounting at a slight angle reduces rigidity.
- Use a stapler to easily fix 4mm plywood. For nails, drill pilot holes first.
Watch out
- If back panel is larger than bookshelf, trim protruding parts. If smaller, keep uniform 5mm or less gap at edges.
- 13
Stapling the Back Panel
≈ 20 minUsing a stapler (about 15mm staples) or small nails, fix the back panel to side and shelf boards at intervals of 100-150mm around the perimeter and along shelf board lines. Start at corners and proceed in diagonal sequence to reduce distortion.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 13 / 20Tip
- Staplers cost about 1500-2500 yen and allow faster construction than nails; worthwhile investment for bookshelf making.
- Mark shelf board positions with pencil on the back panel before fixing to avoid missing attachment points.
Watch out
- Staples protruding inside the bookshelf can damage books. A 15mm staple length suits 19mm wood thickness.
- Fix only perimeter and shelf board lines; inadequate fixing can cause back panel to bulge when warped.
- 14
Preparing L-Bracket Attachment
≈ 15 minPrepare four 50mm L-shaped brackets to be installed two each on the upper rear left and right sides. One side attaches to the bookshelf top edge, the other to the wall. Confirm wall stud positions with a stud finder beforehand.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 14 / 20Tip
- Low-cost stud finders from 100 yen stores are less accurate; buy home center versions (1000-2000 yen) for reliability.
- Wall studs are typically spaced at 455mm intervals; finding one helps estimate positions of others.
Watch out
- If screws miss studs and enter only drywall, tipping prevention is ineffective; always screw into studs.
- If bracket positions do not align with studs, shift bracket left or right to center screws into studs.
- 15
Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf
≈ 10 minAttach four L-brackets to the outside upper side panels of the bookshelf using coarse-thread 38mm screws through the bracket's screw holes. Fix brackets flush with or within 5mm of the side board surface, positioning the bracket bent portion outward to be perpendicular to the wall.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 15 / 20Tip
- Ensure bracket orientation so the bent part faces the wall side and screw holes face the bookshelf side.
Watch out
- If brackets are attached crookedly, gaps will form between bracket and wall during fixing. Check horizontally with a level.
- 16
Bookshelf Placement and Wall Fixing
≈ 20 minCarry the bookshelf to the installation site upright (two people recommended). Position flush against the wall and drive coarse-thread screws 45-50mm long into wall studs through bracket screw holes to complete tipping prevention. Use supplied screws or equivalent length ones.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 16 / 20Tip
- Screws for the wall side must be longer than 38mm to reach studs (45-50mm).
- Wall fixing is the most important step; do not neglect it as earthquake tipping causes injuries or fatalities.
Watch out
- Using only drywall anchors is insufficient strength; always screw into studs.
- If gap between bookshelf and wall exceeds 5mm, insert shims before fixing; otherwise, bracket attachment will be ineffective.
- 17
Cleaning Before Painting
≈ 10 minClean the entire bookshelf with a vacuum and dry cloth to completely remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality before painting greatly affects finish. Optionally, mask the plywood back to prevent paint absorption.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 17 / 20Tip
- Wipe before painting using three steps: dry wipe, wet wipe, then dry wipe again for perfect cleaning.
Watch out
- Residual wood dust causes rough paint surfaces. Shine a light to check.
- 18
First Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 40 minApply oil stain (Watco Oil, Kinura, etc.) with a brush over the entire surface in order: outside of side boards, shelf board faces, shelf board undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Expect to use about 60-70% of total for first coat due to absorption.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 18 / 20Tip
- Oil stain application steps: brush on, wait 10-15 minutes, wipe off. Unwiped excess remains sticky.
- Brush width 30-50mm is optimal for bookshelf work; larger brushes don’t reach details well.
Watch out
- Forgetting to wipe leaves stickiness for over a week. Always wipe off.
- Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and can become uneven; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
- 19
Second Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 25 minAfter 24 hours drying from first coat, apply a second coat using 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of the first. Wipe off excess similarly. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for complete drying.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 19 / 20Tip
- Second coat corrects unevenness from first coat and applies a uniform thin layer.
- Apply a third coat if deeper color is desired.
Watch out
- Do not forget wiping off on second coat. Thick layers cause unevenness.
- Keep drying area indoors free from dust and insects during drying.
- 20
Completion, Usage Start, and Inspection
≈ 15 minAfter complete oil drying (48 hours), place books and start using. Arrange heavier books on lower shelves and lighter books on upper shelves for balance and stability. One week after use, recheck screw tightness and L-bracket fixing, tightening if necessary.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 20 / 20Tip
- Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on the bottom two shelves. Use paperbacks and light books on top shelves.
- Reapply oil once every 3–5 years to restore luster and protective effect.
Watch out
- Putting books on before full drying risks oil transfer to books. Wait at least 48 hours.
- Books absorb moisture, so place a dehumidifier during humid seasons to prevent bookshelf warping.
Warnings
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
