Final Check of Parts and Tools
≈ 15 minPrepare two side boards made of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×600×900 mm), six shelf boards (19×600×600 mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (600×900 mm), twenty-four coarse-thread screws 38 mm, and four 50 mm L-brackets. Tools required are electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush with paint tray, and a tacker or fine nails.
MeasureW 600 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 20Tip
- SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each board for warp upon purchase and select those with warp within 1mm.
- L-brackets and screws are essential safety features for tipping prevention; never omit them.
Watch out
- When buying SPF lumber, check each board for warp, cracks, and knots. Using boards warped over 1mm will cause shelf distortion.
- The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and fragile; handle carefully and store upright immediately after cutting.
- 2
Secure Workspace
≈ 10 minPrepare a workspace that can accommodate assembling and standing a 900 mm tall bookshelf. Ceiling height should be over 2200 mm, floor area around 1500×1200 mm is sufficient. Lay a blue sheet and support long materials on two sawhorses.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 2 / 20Tip
- Assembly is done lying on the floor; standing up shelving is the final step. This allows work even in small rooms.
Watch out
- Standing up the assembled bookshelf alone is difficult; a minimum of two persons is safer.
- If ceiling height is under 2000 mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when raised; check in advance.
- 3
Create Cut List and Request Cutting
≈ 20 minSubmit cut list to hardware store for two side boards (900 mm), six shelf boards (600 mm), and back panel (600×900 mm). If cutting yourself, support long lumber on two sawhorses and make length cuts. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2 mm.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 3 / 20Tip
- Cutting fee is usually 30-50 yen per cut; total cost around 1000 yen and time reduced from 30 minutes to immediate.
- Cut the six shelf boards stacked together for highest dimensional accuracy.
Watch out
- 19 mm thick SPF lumber can deform even in straight cuts. Use a guide to cut straight.
- 4 mm plywood is soft and can warp if not supported underneath when cutting.
- 4
Sand All Parts (#120 then #240)
≈ 40 minSand all parts using #120 grit followed by #240 grit. Pay particular attention to side board shelf supporting surfaces, top and bottom of shelf boards, and wood ends. Rounding shelf edges improves usability. After sanding, vacuum to remove dust completely.
Sand#120SandSTEP 4 / 20Tip
- Sanding shelf board surfaces smoothens book placement and removal.
- Wood ends have raised fibers and require thorough sanding starting from #120 grit.
Watch out
- SPF lumber is soft; over-sanding can alter dimensions. Use #120 grit mainly, reserving #240 for finishing.
- Rounding edges too much results in clumsy appearance; keep radius about 2 mm.
- 5
Mark Shelf Positions on Side Boards
≈ 15 minPlace two side boards together and mark shelf positions for six levels with pencil. Shelf intervals are typically 300 mm from bottom up (total 1800 mm), or can include wider decorative spacing at top as per design. Ensure shelf positions on both boards match exactly by clamping and marking simultaneously.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 5 / 20Tip
- Clamp two side boards together before marking to ensure identical shelf positions.
- Use heights of common book sizes (A4 297 mm, A5 210 mm, Bunko 150 mm) as reference to determine shelf spacing.
Watch out
- Mismatched shelf positions cause shelves to be crooked; simultaneous marking is essential.
- Ignoring shelf board thickness of 19 mm in spacing calculation results in narrower clearances than planned.
- 6
Prepare Pilot Holes
≈ 20 minDrill 3 mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside of side boards inward through the side board and partially into the shelf board end grain. Mark drill depth with masking tape aiming for a total depth of 29 mm (19 mm plus 10 mm).
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 6 / 20Tip
- 3 mm pilot hole diameter corresponds to about 70% of 4.2 mm coarse-thread screw shaft diameter, preventing splitting.
- For each shelf board, drill two pilot holes on each side board, total of 24 holes for 6 shelves; ensure none are missed.
Watch out
- Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from seating fully; drilling slightly deeper is safer.
- Avoid drilling through the opposite side of the shelf board by using tape stopper to control depth.
- 7
Temporarily Fix Shelf Boards to One Side Board
≈ 20 minLay one side board flat on the floor and stand six shelf boards vertically at marked positions. Temporarily fix each with an F-clamp. Check right angles between side board and shelf boards using a carpenter's square. For areas where the square cannot fit, verify visually.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 7 / 20Tip
- Starting assembly from bottom shelf upwards improves stability.
- One clamp per shelf board is ideal; if only two clamps are available, proceed sequentially.
Watch out
- Fixing with incorrect right angles causes skewed, parallelogram-shaped assembly; always verify with square.
- Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges prevent back panel installation later.
- 8
Screw Shelf Boards to One Side Board
≈ 15 minDrive two coarse-thread 38 mm screws through pilot holes from outside of side board into shelf board ends at each position (two screws per shelf, total 12 screws). Screw heads should be flush or sunk 0.5 mm below side board surface. Use medium torque on electric driver; finish tightening by turning screw manually 1/4 turn.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 8 / 20Tip
- Offset the two screws slightly vertically to increase withdrawal strength.
- If screw heads show, consider filling with wooden dowels later (optional).
Watch out
- Over-tightening screws may split 19 mm thick SPF wood; use medium torque only.
- Screws driven at angle that penetrate opposite side require removal, filling holes with wood filler, and reinstalling in different position.
- 9
Prepare for Attaching Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minStand the partially assembled unit upright and place the second side board against the opposite sides of shelf boards, aligning with marked layout. Temporarily clamp in place and confirm entire assembly is standing straight and square.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 9 / 20Tip
- This step is recommended for two-person operation; one person holds while the other clamps to achieve accuracy.
- Opposite side board markings are pre-marked; do not remake.
Watch out
- Attempting this alone risks shelf boards falling off floor; always use two people or lean assembly against wall during clamping.
- 10
Screw Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minDrive coarse-thread 38 mm screws through pilot holes from outside of opposite side board into shelf board ends (two screws per shelf, total 12 screws). After this the main structure of the bookshelf comprising two side boards and six shelf boards is complete.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 10 / 20Tip
- After fixing both sides, check all shelves with a level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust as necessary.
Watch out
- Driving screws on both sides simultaneously can cause distortion; complete all screws on one side before the other.
- 11
Check Overall Level and Diagonal
≈ 15 minPlace assembled shelving flat on floor. Use level to check horizontality of all shelves. Measure both diagonal distances between corners and confirm difference is within 5 mm. If distorted, loosen clamps to adjust and secure with additional screws.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 11 / 20Tip
- A diagonal difference over 5 mm indicates parallelogram shape needing correction before attaching back panel.
- The back panel provides rigidity; straighten distortions before installing it.
Watch out
- Shelf sagging (center lower than ends) worsens under book weight. Shelf length of 600 mm is acceptable; longer than 1000 mm may require reinforcement.
- 12
Prepare for Back Panel Installation
≈ 10 minPlace 4 mm plywood back panel against back of shelving, aligning all corners and confirming diagonal measurements match assembly, allowing final correction of distortions. Temporarily fix with masking tape.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 12 / 20Tip
- Back panel is a critical structural component controlling distortions; slight misalignment reduces rigidity.
- 4 mm plywood can be easily fastened with tacker; pre-drill pilot holes if using fine nails.
Watch out
- If back panel is larger than assembly, trim excess. If smaller, maintain even gap within 5 mm at edges.
- 13
Attach Back Panel with Tacker
≈ 20 minUse tacker (15 mm staples) or fine nails to fasten back panel to side and shelf boards every 100-150 mm including all edges and shelf board positions. Start fastening from corners along diagonals to minimize distortion.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 13 / 20Tip
- Tacker tools cost between 1500-2500 yen at hardware stores and speed assembly faster than nails; good investment for bookshelf projects.
- Mark shelf board positions on back panel with pencil before nailing to avoid missing fastening points.
Watch out
- Staples protruding inside can damage books; 15 mm staples are appropriate for 19 mm thick wood.
- Attaching only edges without shelf positions causes back panel to bow when load applied.
- 14
Prepare L-Bracket Installation
≈ 15 minAttach four 50 mm L-brackets, two each on top rear left and right sides of shelving. One side of bracket mounts on bookshelf top edge, the other to wall. Use a stud sensor to locate wall studs.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 14 / 20Tip
- 100 yen store stud finders lack accuracy; hardware store models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
- Wall studs are generally spaced 455 mm apart and finding one helps locate adjacent studs.
Watch out
- Attaching brackets only to drywall fails to prevent tipping; brackets must be secured to studs.
- If bracket location does not align with studs, shift bracket horizontally to position screws centrally over studs.
- 15
Attach L-Brackets to Bookshelf Side Boards
≈ 10 minFix four L-brackets to outside upper edges of bookshelf side boards using coarse-thread screws 38 mm through provided bracket holes. Brackets should be flush or within 5 mm of side board surface, protruding perpendicular towards wall.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 15 / 20Tip
- Ensure bracket bend points towards wall side and screw holes towards bookshelf side.
Watch out
- Slanted bracket installation causes gaps between bracket and wall during final fixing; check horizontal alignment with level.
- 16
Set Up Bookshelf and Secure to Wall
≈ 20 minMove bookshelf to designated position upright (two persons recommended). Position bookshelf flush against wall, then drive coarse-thread screws 45-50 mm long through L-bracket holes into wall studs. Secure all four brackets to complete tipping prevention.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 16 / 20Tip
- Wall-side screws must be longer than 38 mm to reach studs, use 45-50 mm screws.
- Wall mounting is the most critical step to prevent injury or death during earthquakes; do not skip or skimp.
Watch out
- Relying solely on drywall anchors is insufficient for strength; always fix to studs.
- If over 5 mm gap between wall and bookshelf exists, insert shims before securing; unshimmed gaps reduce bracket effectiveness.
- 17
Clean Before Painting
≈ 10 minThoroughly vacuum and wipe entire bookshelf with dry cloth to remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality impacts final paint finish. Optionally mask plywood back panel to prevent overabsorption of stain.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 17 / 20Tip
- Pre-paint wiping sequence of dry wipe → wet wipe → dry wipe ensures optimal cleanliness.
Watch out
- Remaining wood dust causes rough paint texture; illuminate surface to check cleanliness.
- 18
Apply Oil Stain, First Coat
≈ 40 minBrush oil stain (such as Watco Oil or Kinura) over entire bookshelf in order: outer side boards, front shelf board surfaces, inner shelf board surfaces, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. The first coat uses about 60-70% of total stain amount due to high absorption.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 18 / 20Tip
- Apply oil stain, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe excess; leaving stain un-wiped causes long-lasting stickiness.
- Use brush 30-50 mm wide for manageable application on bookshelf; wider brushes hinder detail work.
Watch out
- Forgetting to wipe off stain leaves stickiness for over a week; always wipe.
- Plywood back panel absorbs stain quickly causing unevenness; apply thin coats and wipe carefully.
- 19
Apply Oil Stain, Second Coat
≈ 25 minAfter the first coat dries for 24 hours, apply second coat with 1/3 to 1/2 the amount used initially. Wipe off excess after 10-15 minutes. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for complete drying.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 19 / 20Tip
- Second coat corrects color unevenness from first coat; apply evenly and thinly.
- Add a third coat if deeper color is desired.
Watch out
- Do not skip wiping step on second coat; thick layers cause uneven finish.
- During drying, keep bookshelf indoors free from dust and insects.
- 20
Completion, Use, and Inspection
≈ 15 minAfter full oil curing (48 hours), place books and start use. Place heavier books on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for better balance and stability. After one week of use, re-check screws and L-brackets; tighten as needed.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 20 / 20Tip
- Place heavy books like encyclopedias on bottom two shelves; top shelves for paperbacks and novels to reduce weight.
- Reapply oil every 3-5 years to renew shine and protection.
Watch out
- Placing books immediately after finishing oil application can transfer stain to books; ensure at least 48 hours drying.
- Books absorb moisture; during humid seasons place dehumidifiers and be aware moisture may warp bookshelf.
Warnings
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
