   Prepare two side boards made of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×600×900 mm), six shelf boards (19×600×600 mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (600×900 mm), twenty-four coarse-thread screws 38 mm, and four 50 mm L-brackets. Tools required are electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush with paint tray, and a tacker or fine nails.

   Tip

   • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each board for warp upon purchase and select those with warp within 1mm.
   • L-brackets and screws are essential safety features for tipping prevention; never omit them.

   • When buying SPF lumber, check each board for warp, cracks, and knots. Using boards warped over 1mm will cause shelf distortion.
   • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and fragile; handle carefully and store upright immediately after cutting.

   Secure Workspace

   Prepare a workspace that can accommodate assembling and standing a 900 mm tall bookshelf. Ceiling height should be over 2200 mm, floor area around 1500×1200 mm is sufficient. Lay a blue sheet and support long materials on two sawhorses.

   • Assembly is done lying on the floor; standing up shelving is the final step. This allows work even in small rooms.

   • Standing up the assembled bookshelf alone is difficult; a minimum of two persons is safer.

   Create Cut List and Request Cutting

   Submit cut list to hardware store for two side boards (900 mm), six shelf boards (600 mm), and back panel (600×900 mm). If cutting yourself, support long lumber on two sawhorses and make length cuts. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2 mm.

   • Cut the six shelf boards stacked together for highest dimensional accuracy.

   • 19 mm thick SPF lumber can deform even in straight cuts. Use a guide to cut straight.
   • 4 mm plywood is soft and can warp if not supported underneath when cutting.
4. 4

   Sand All Parts (#120 then #240)

   ≈ 40 min

   Sand all parts using #120 grit followed by #240 grit. Pay particular attention to side board shelf supporting surfaces, top and bottom of shelf boards, and wood ends. Rounding shelf edges improves usability. After sanding, vacuum to remove dust completely.

   • Sanding shelf board surfaces smoothens book placement and removal.
   • Wood ends have raised fibers and require thorough sanding starting from #120 grit.

   Watch out

   • SPF lumber is soft; over-sanding can alter dimensions. Use #120 grit mainly, reserving #240 for finishing.
   • Rounding edges too much results in clumsy appearance; keep radius about 2 mm.
5. 5

   Mark Shelf Positions on Side Boards

   Place two side boards together and mark shelf positions for six levels with pencil. Shelf intervals are typically 300 mm from bottom up (total 1800 mm), or can include wider decorative spacing at top as per design. Ensure shelf positions on both boards match exactly by clamping and marking simultaneously.

   Tip

   • Clamp two side boards together before marking to ensure identical shelf positions.
   • Use heights of common book sizes (A4 297 mm, A5 210 mm, Bunko 150 mm) as reference to determine shelf spacing.

   • Mismatched shelf positions cause shelves to be crooked; simultaneous marking is essential.
   • Ignoring shelf board thickness of 19 mm in spacing calculation results in narrower clearances than planned.

   Prepare Pilot Holes

   Drill 3 mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside of side boards inward through the side board and partially into the shelf board end grain. Mark drill depth with masking tape aiming for a total depth of 29 mm (19 mm plus 10 mm).

   Tip

   • 3 mm pilot hole diameter corresponds to about 70% of 4.2 mm coarse-thread screw shaft diameter, preventing splitting.
   • For each shelf board, drill two pilot holes on each side board, total of 24 holes for 6 shelves; ensure none are missed.

   • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from seating fully; drilling slightly deeper is safer.
   • Avoid drilling through the opposite side of the shelf board by using tape stopper to control depth.

   Temporarily Fix Shelf Boards to One Side Board

   Lay one side board flat on the floor and stand six shelf boards vertically at marked positions. Temporarily fix each with an F-clamp. Check right angles between side board and shelf boards using a carpenter's square. For areas where the square cannot fit, verify visually.

   • One clamp per shelf board is ideal; if only two clamps are available, proceed sequentially.

   • Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges prevent back panel installation later.
8. 8

   Screw Shelf Boards to One Side Board

   Drive two coarse-thread 38 mm screws through pilot holes from outside of side board into shelf board ends at each position (two screws per shelf, total 12 screws). Screw heads should be flush or sunk 0.5 mm below side board surface. Use medium torque on electric driver; finish tightening by turning screw manually 1/4 turn.

   • Offset the two screws slightly vertically to increase withdrawal strength.
   • If screw heads show, consider filling with wooden dowels later (optional).

   Prepare for Attaching Opposite Side Board

   Stand the partially assembled unit upright and place the second side board against the opposite sides of shelf boards, aligning with marked layout. Temporarily clamp in place and confirm entire assembly is standing straight and square.

   • This step is recommended for two-person operation; one person holds while the other clamps to achieve accuracy.
   • Opposite side board markings are pre-marked; do not remake.

    Screw Opposite Side Board

    Drive coarse-thread 38 mm screws through pilot holes from outside of opposite side board into shelf board ends (two screws per shelf, total 12 screws). After this the main structure of the bookshelf comprising two side boards and six shelf boards is complete.

    • After fixing both sides, check all shelves with a level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust as necessary.

    • Driving screws on both sides simultaneously can cause distortion; complete all screws on one side before the other.

    Check Overall Level and Diagonal

    Place assembled shelving flat on floor. Use level to check horizontality of all shelves. Measure both diagonal distances between corners and confirm difference is within 5 mm. If distorted, loosen clamps to adjust and secure with additional screws.

    Attach L-Brackets to Bookshelf Side Boards

    Set Up Bookshelf and Secure to Wall

    Move bookshelf to designated position upright (two persons recommended). Position bookshelf flush against wall, then drive coarse-thread screws 45-50 mm long through L-bracket holes into wall studs. Secure all four brackets to complete tipping prevention.
