Build steps

  1. 1

    Deciding Design and Installation Location

    ≈ 30 min

Decide the design and installation location of the wood signboard (600×25×300mm). Sketch the layout of letters and patterns at full scale on graph paper or plain paper. Also decide in advance whether it will be hung or wall-mounted.

    Measure
    W 600 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 9

    Tip

    • Letter size should be readable from a distance; 50mm or larger is recommended.
    • If letters are too close, they become hard to read; space them about the same as letter width.
    • Overlay the layout sketch on the wood and use carbon paper to transfer the design accurately.

    Watch out

    • Do not draw the design directly on the wood as corrections are impossible; always make a paper prototype.
    • Neglecting ventilation and rain exposure at the installation site can cause deterioration within a year.
  2. 2

    Preparing Materials

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare one solid cedar board (25×300×600mm), two reinforcement strips of SPF lumber 1x2 (19×38×580mm), two stainless steel hanging hardware pieces, ten 30mm coarse-thread screws, wood burning pen (or router), and outdoor paint (like Osmo Color).

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 9

    Tip

    • Solid cedar boards have rich character; place sides with beautiful knots and grain on the front.
    • Check for warping on the 25mm thick board at purchase; warping causes signboard curvature.
    • Wood burning pens (wood burners) are available for about 1000 yen.
    • (Note: The last tip was not explicitly in the Japanese but is common knowledge.)

    Watch out

    • Avoid plywood; it delaminates outdoors.
    • Boards thinner than 15mm risk burning through during lettering.
  3. 3

    Sanding

    ≈ 20 min

Sand the cedar board in order with #120, then #180, then #240 grit sandpaper. The sign surface must be especially smooth for quality lettering or engraving. Chamfer the edges 1–2mm to prevent injury. Sand reinforcement strips similarly.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 9

    Tip

    • Surface smoothness determines letter clarity; sand carefully.
    • Finishing with #240 produces crisp lines for wood burning.
    • Sand end grain so paint absorbs well.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient sanding causes lettering to blur or skip.
    • Sanding creates a lot of dust; do this in well-ventilated areas like balconies or garages.
  4. 4

    Transferring Design

    ≈ 20 min

Use carbon paper to transfer the full size design onto the wood surface. Trace the outline strongly with a pencil and check for misalignment. The faint lines left will guide wood burning or carving.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 4 / 9

    Tip

    • Carbon paper can be bought at 100 yen shops; trace firmly with a pencil.
    • Make multiple copies of the design before transfer to allow retries.
    • Use a level or ruler to check letter horizontality.

    Watch out

    • Too heavy carbon lines are hard to erase later; transfer lightly.
    • Don’t get the wood wet after transfer as lines smear; ensure the surface is dry before painting.
  5. 5

Letter Engraving (Wood Burning or Router)

    ≈ 60 min

Trace over the transferred lines with a wood burning pen at 300–400℃ for 5–10 seconds each, or carve grooves 3–5mm deep with a trimmer/router. Do test runs on scrap wood first.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 5 / 9

    Tip

    • Gently glide the wood burner; pressing too hard causes overly dark burn marks.
    • Secure the board firmly for router carving to avoid shaky lines.
    • Outline letters first, then fill inside for dimensionality.

    Watch out

    • Excessive heat can cause flames; ventilate and keep a water bucket ready.
    • Too deep router cuts may go through the board.
  6. 6

    Attaching Reinforcement Strips

    ≈ 25 min

Attach two reinforcement strips (19×38×580mm) to the back of the board vertically or horizontally using wood glue and four 30mm coarse-thread screws each. These prevent warping and serve as mounting bases for hanging hardware.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 9

    Tip

    • Align reinforcement strips to the hanging hardware installation points.
    • Drill 3mm pilot holes before screwing to prevent splitting.
    • Apply glue first, then drill pilot holes, then drive screws.

    Watch out

    • Displaced strip placement fails to prevent warping.
    • Confirm 30mm screws don’t penetrate through the front; combined thickness of board plus strip is 44mm to gauge fastening strength.
  7. 7

    Surface Preparation and First Coat

    ≈ 30 min

Lightly sand entire surface with #240 sandpaper and remove dust. Apply Osmo Color (clear or colored) with a brush. Clear allows the wood grain and burnt letters to stand out. Let dry naturally for 2–3 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 7 / 9

    Tip

    • Osmo Color is a natural oil-based paint preserving wood texture.
    • If using colored paint, mask letters with tape beforehand.
    • Choose paints with UV protection for outdoor durability.

    Watch out

    • Applying thick paint hides the lettering; apply thinly.
    • Painting in direct sunlight causes surface to dry while inside remains damp; paint in shade or cloudy weather.
  8. 8

    Second Coat

    ≈ 30 min

After first coat dries, gently scuff sand with #400 sandpaper and remove dust. Apply a thin second coat to form a durable film. Let dry at least 24 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 8 / 9

    Tip

    • Two coats greatly enhance resistance to UV and rain.
    • Light sanding removes fuzz without damaging finish.
    • Keep in a dust-free environment while drying.

    Watch out

    • Rain before drying causes paint films to run; check weather forecast before painting.
    • Too thick second coat hides letters.
  9. 9

    Attaching Hanging Hardware and Installation

    ≈ 30 min

Attach two stainless steel hanging hardware pieces to the top edge aligned with the reinforcement strips. Use four 30mm coarse-thread screws per piece. For wall hanging, use chains or wire on wall hooks; for mounting flush, fix directly to wall studs with screws.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 9 / 9

    Tip

    • Select stainless steel hardware to avoid rust staining the signboard.
    • Use chain length to adjust hanging angle to suit design.
    • Locate wall studs with a stud finder when mounting.

    Watch out

    • Weak hardware risks falling in wind; choose hardware capable of supporting sign weight plus wind load.
    • Do not rely on drywall alone; always screw into wall studs.

Warnings

  • ⚠️If used outdoors, wood preservative coating is essential (repaint once a year recommended).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
