Build steps

  1. 1

    Decide Design and Installation Location

    ≈ 30 min

Decide the design and installation location of the wooden shop signboard (900×30×400mm). Sketch the layout of letters and patterns to actual size on graph paper or plain paper. Decide beforehand whether it will be hung or wall-mounted.

    Measure
    W 900 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 9

    Tip

    • Letter height should be readable from a distance; 50mm or more is recommended.
    • Narrow letter spacing makes reading difficult; space letters about the same width as the letters.
    • Overlay the sketch on the board and trace with carbon paper for accuracy.

    Watch out

    • Drawing the design directly on wood makes corrections impossible; always prototype on paper.
    • Ignoring ventilation and rain exposure at the installation spot will cause deterioration within a year.
  2. 2

    Prepare Materials

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare one solid cedar board (30×400×900mm), two SPF lumber 1x2 battens (19×38×880mm) as reinforcement, two stainless steel hanging fittings, ten 30mm coarse-thread screws, wood burning pen (or router), and outdoor paint (e.g. Osmo Color).

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 9

    Tip

    • Solid cedar boards have rich grain - select the side with beautiful knots and wood grain as the front.
    • Check for warping on the 25mm thick solid board when purchasing to avoid curved signboard.
    • Wood burning pens are available for around 1000 yen.
    • Avoid plywood since it can delaminate outdoors.
    • Boards thinner than 15mm risk burning through when carving letters.

    Watch out

    • Avoid plywood as it will delaminate outdoors.
    • Boards thinner than 15mm may be perforated when carving letters.
  3. 3

    Sanding

    ≈ 20 min

Sand the cedar board starting with #120, then #180, and finally #240 grit. The signboard surface requires smoothness for carving or writing letters. Chamfer edges 1-2mm to prevent injuries. Sand the reinforcing battens similarly.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 9

    Tip

    • Surface smoothness determines lettering beauty; sand carefully.
    • Finishing with #240 grit allows clear lines when using a wood burning pen.
    • Sand the end grain for better paint absorption.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient sanding causes blotchy lettering.
    • Sanding produces large amounts of dust; work in ventilated areas like balconies or garages.
  4. 4

    Transfer Design

    ≈ 20 min

Transfer the full-scale design onto the board surface using carbon paper. Trace the outline darkly with a pencil and check for misalignment. Faint lines remain as guides for wood burning or carving.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 4 / 9

    Tip

    • Carbon paper is available at 100-yen shops; press pencil firmly during tracing.
    • Make multiple copies of the design before transferring to allow retries if mistakes occur.
    • Check letter horizontality with a level or ruler.

    Watch out

    • Dark carbon lines are difficult to erase later; trace lightly.
    • Do not wet the board after transfer as lines will run; ensure it is dry before painting.
  5. 5

Letter Carving (Wood Burning or Router)

    ≈ 60 min

Trace over the transferred lines with a wood burning pen or carve grooves with a trimmer/router. For wood burning, set temperature to 300-400℃ and hold 5-10 seconds per spot. For router, carve grooves 3-5mm deep. Practice on scrap wood before starting.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 5 / 9

    Tip

    • Gently stroke with wood burning pen without pressing hard to avoid overly dark char color.
    • Fix the board firmly when routing to prevent shaky lines.
    • Carve letter outlines first, then fill interiors for dimensional effect.

    Watch out

    • Overheating wood burning pen causing flames poses fire risk; ensure ventilation and have water bucket nearby.
    • Excessive router depth may perforate the board.
  6. 6

    Attach Reinforcing Battens

    ≈ 25 min

Attach two reinforcing battens (19×38×880mm) vertically or horizontally on the back of the board using wood glue and four 30mm coarse-thread screws each. They prevent warp and serve as a base for hanging fittings.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 9

    Tip

    • Align battens with the planned hanging fitting positions.
    • Drill 3mm pilot holes before screwing to prevent splitting.
    • Apply wood glue first, then drill pilot holes and screw in sequence.

    Watch out

    • Uneven batten placement fails to prevent board warping.
    • Confirm that 30mm screws do not penetrate through the board. The target is clamping strength with total thickness 25 + 19 = 44mm.
  7. 7

    Surface Preparation and First Coating

    ≈ 30 min

Lightly finish sand the entire surface with #240 grit, then remove dust. Apply Osmo Color (clear or colored) with a brush. Clear finish highlights the burnt lettering's color. Allow natural drying for 2-3 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 7 / 9

    Tip

    • Osmo Color is a natural-material based paint preserving wood texture.
    • Mask lettering areas if using colored paint to protect them.
    • Choose UV-protective paint for outdoor use to reduce fading.

    Watch out

    • Applying paint too thickly may obscure letter details.
    • Avoid painting under direct sunlight to prevent surface drying while inside remains wet; paint in shade or cloudy weather.
  8. 8

    Second Coating

    ≈ 30 min

After the first coat dries, lightly hand-sand with #400 grit and remove dust. Apply a thin second coat to form a durable film for outdoor exposure. Let dry for at least 24 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 8 / 9

    Tip

    • Two coats greatly improve UV and rain resistance.
    • #400 sanding needs only be light to smooth raised fibers.
    • Dry in dust-free environment.

    Watch out

    • Do not expose to rain before drying or paint film will run.
    • Applying second coat too thickly may fill in letters.
  9. 9

    Attach Hanging Fittings and Installation

    ≈ 30 min

Attach two stainless steel hanging fittings on the top edge aligning with battens using four 30mm coarse-thread screws each. For wall hanging, use chain or wire to hang on wall hooks. For wall mounting, fix fittings directly to wall studs.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 9 / 9

    Tip

    • Select stainless steel fittings; iron fittings will rust and stain the signboard.
    • Chain length can be adjusted to control hanging angle for design.
    • Use a stud finder to locate wall studs before fixing to the wall.

    Watch out

    • Weak fittings may cause fall due to wind loads; choose fittings supporting combined sign weight and wind.
    • Do not rely on drywall alone; always secure into wall studs.

Warnings

  • ⚠️If used outdoors, wood preservative coating is essential (recoating recommended annually).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
