Build steps

Decide Design and Installation Location
≈ 30 minDecide the design and installation location for the antique-style wooden signboard (700×30×500mm). Draft the layout of letters and patterns at actual size on graph or plain paper. Also decide in advance whether it will be hung or wall-mounted.
MeasureW 700 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 9Tip
- Letter size should be readable from a distance; 50mm or larger recommended
- Avoid tight letter spacing; leave space approximately equal to letter width
- Overlaying the draft on the board and tracing with carbon paper ensures accuracy
Watch out
- Drawing directly on wood makes correction impossible; always prototype on paper
- Neglecting ventilation and rain exposure at installation location leads to deterioration within a year
- 2
Prepare Materials
≈ 15 minPrepare one solid cedar board (30×500×700mm), two reinforcement battens as SPF lumber 1x2 (19×38×680mm), two stainless steel hanging hardware, ten 30mm coarse-thread screws, wood burning pen (or router), and outdoor paint (e.g., Osmo Color).
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 9Tip
- Solid cedar board has rich texture; place face with beautiful knots and grain outward
- Check for warping on 25mm thick solid boards at purchase; warping causes signboard curvature
- Wood burning pen (wood burning tool) can be acquired for about ¥1000
Watch out
- Avoid plywood; it delaminates outdoors
- Boards thinner than 15mm risk breaking through when carving letters
- 3
Sanding
≈ 20 minSand the cedar board sequentially with #120, #180, then #240 grit sandpapers. The signboard surface requires smoothness for carving or writing letters. Chamfer edges 1-2mm to prevent injury. Sand reinforcement battens similarly.
Sand#120 → #180SandSTEP 3 / 9Tip
- Surface smoothness affects letter beauty; sand thoroughly
- Finishing with #240 grit makes wood burning pen lines clean
- Sand end-grain to help paint penetrate
Watch out
- Insufficient sanding causes letters to fade
- Sanding creates large amounts of dust; perform in ventilated areas like balconies or garages
- 4
Transfer Design
≈ 20 minTransfer full-scale design to the board surface using carbon paper. Darken outlines with pencil and confirm no misalignment. The faint lines remain as guides for burning or carving.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 4 / 9Tip
- Carbon paper is available at 100-yen shops; press firmly with pencil
- Make multiple copies of design for retrying if needed
- Use a level or ruler to check letter horizontality
Watch out
- Carbon lines too dark are hard to erase later; transfer lightly
- Wetting board after transfer causes lines to run; ensure board is dry before painting
- 5
Carve Letters (Wood Burning or Router)
≈ 60 minTrace over transfer lines with a wood burning pen at 300-400°C for 5-10 seconds each or carve grooves 3-5mm deep with a trimmer/router. Test on scrap wood first.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 5 / 9Tip
- Burn gently by stroking lightly; pressing hard darkens burn excessively
- Secure the board when routing; unsteady movement produces jagged lines
- Outline letters first, then fill inside to create 3D effect
Watch out
- Wood burning at flame-producing temperatures risks fire; ensure ventilation and bucket of water nearby
- Routing too deep can penetrate the board
- 6
Attach Reinforcement Battens
≈ 25 minAttach two reinforcement battens (19×38×680mm) vertically or horizontally on the back of the board using wood glue and four 30mm coarse-thread screws each. They prevent warping and provide substrate for hanging hardware attachment.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 6 / 9Tip
- Position battens corresponding to where hanging hardware will be attached later
- Drill 3mm pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting
- Apply wood glue first, then drill pilot holes, followed by screw insertion
Watch out
- Unbalanced batten placement cannot prevent warping
- Check in advance that 30mm screws won’t penetrate board; aim for clamping strength of 25mm board plus 19mm batten = 44mm
- 7
Surface Preparation and First Coat
≈ 30 minLightly finish with #240 sanding and remove dust. Apply Osmo Color (clear or colored) with a brush. Clear preserves wood grain and accentuates burnt lettering. Let dry naturally for 2-3 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 7 / 9Tip
- Osmo Color is a natural ingredient-based paint retaining wood texture
- Mask letters with tape if using colored paint
- Use UV-protective paint for outdoor use to prevent fading
Watch out
- Thick paint hides lettering; apply thinly
- Painting in direct sunlight dries surface alone leaving the inside semi-dry; choose shade or cloudy weather
- 8
Second Coat
≈ 30 minAfter the first coat dries, lightly hand-sand with #400 and remove dust. Apply a thin second coat to form a solid protective film for outdoor use. Allow drying for at least 24 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 8 / 9Tip
- Two coats greatly improve resistance against UV and rain
- Hand-sanding with #400 should only smooth fibers
- Place in dust-free area while drying
Watch out
- Rain before drying causes paint to run; check weather forecast before painting
- Thick second coat buries letters
- 9
Attach Hanging Hardware and Installation
≈ 30 minAttach two stainless steel hanging hardware units to the top edge aligned with reinforcement battens, securing each with four 30mm coarse-thread screws. For wall-hanging, use chains or wire on wall hooks; for direct wall mounting, screw into wall studs.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 9 / 9Tip
- Select stainless steel hardware; iron rust causes stains
- Chain length allows angle adjustment; match design preferences
- Locate wall studs using a stud finder when fixing to walls
Watch out
- Weak hardware risks fall due to weight and wind load
- Drywall alone cannot support load; always fix into studs
Warnings
- ⚠️Applying wood preservative for outdoor use is essential (reapplication recommended annually)
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust)
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting
