Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Gather 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×300×700mm), 6 shelf boards (19×300×600mm), one 4mm plywood back board (600×700mm), sixteen 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-brackets. Tools include electric driver, saw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpapers, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 600 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp easily. Inspect each board visually upon purchase and select those with warping within 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are the lifeline for tipping prevention. Do not omit them under any circumstance.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber board for warping, splitting, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped more than 1mm will distort the shelf boards.
    • The 4mm plywood back board is thin and easily broken when moving. After cutting, store it upright immediately.
  2. 2

    Securing the Work Area

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a space where the bookshelf (700mm tall) can stand during work. Ceiling height should be at least 2200mm, and floor area about 1500×1200mm for ample room. Lay a blue sheet and support long boards on two saw horses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble the unit on the floor lying down, only stand it up at the final step. Work is possible even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf is hard for one person. Two people recommended for safety.
    • If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing it up. Verify beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Cutting Order

    ≈ 20 min

Submit cut list for two side boards (700mm), six shelf boards (600mm), and one back board (600×700mm) to home center. When cutting yourself, support long boards (700mm) on two saw horses and cut with a push saw. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fee is 30-50 yen per cut. Paying roughly 1000 yen for all cuts saves 30 minutes to instant cutting.
    • Shelf boards are identical size; bundling them and cutting at once yields best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF lumber can warp even with straight cuts. Use a guide to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood is soft; if not supported underneath while cutting, it warps and distorts.
  4. 4

    Sanding All Materials (#120 → #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all materials using #120 grit first, then #240 grit. Pay extra attention to shelf support surfaces on side boards, top and bottom of shelf boards, and cut edges. Rounding shelf edges where hands touch improves handling. Clean all wood dust completely with a vacuum after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth surface of shelf boards makes putting books in and out easier.
    • Cut edges have raised fibers that need careful sanding starting from #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft. Excessive sanding distorts sizes. Use #120 for most sanding and #240 only for finish.
    • Over-rounding edges looks unsightly. Keep about 2mm radius.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards side by side and mark shelf positions for 6 shelves in pencil. Shelf spacing can be 300mm each from the bottom up (total 1800mm) or designed with wider spacing on top for display. Align side boards perfectly and mark simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp both side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions match perfectly.
    • Using standard book heights (A4: 297mm, A5: 210mm, Bunkobon: 150mm) helps decide shelf spacing for storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf marks on side boards do not match, shelf boards will be inserted at angle. Clamping and marking together is essential.
    • Do not forget shelf board thickness (19mm) when calculating spacing; otherwise, actual gaps will be narrow.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked shelf positions. Drill from the outside of the side boards toward the edge grain of the shelf boards. Mark drill depth with masking tape aiming for 29mm total: 19mm through side board plus 10mm into shelf board.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot holes correspond to 70% diameter of 38mm coarse-thread screws (4.2mm shaft), preventing wood splitting reliably.
    • Each shelf requires 4 pilot holes (2 per side board), totaling 24 holes for 6 shelves. Check carefully to avoid misses.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from fully inserting; drill slightly deeper than thickness for safety.
    • Avoid drilling through the opposite side of the shelf board by setting tape depth limit.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat and stand six shelf boards upright at marked positions. Use F-clamps to temporarily secure and check right angles between side board and shelf boards with carpenter's square. Where square cannot fit, confirm visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Stand shelf boards sequentially from bottom up for stability.
    • Ideally use one clamp per shelf board (six total) for convenience; if limited, use two clamps and proceed stepwise.

    Watch out

    • Fixing with angle off results in parallelogram shape for entire unit; always verify right angles.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges prevent back board fitting later.
  8. 8

Screwing One Side of Shelf Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Drive two 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from side board outside into each shelf board edge. Total twelve screws for six shelves. Screw heads should be flush or sunk 0.5mm into side board. Use medium torque on impact driver and finish by hand tightening about quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset two screws slightly vertically to increase withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are visible, optionally fill holes with wood dowels afterward.

    Watch out

    • Overtightening screws can split 19mm thick SPF lumber edges; use medium torque limit.
    • Screws driven at angles that pierce through shelf boards require removal, filling with wood filler, and re-screwing in another position.
  9. 9

Preparing to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the partially assembled unit with one side board and shelves fixed, then position the other side board matching shelf positions. Temporarily clamp the opposite sides of shelf boards and side board lines. Check that the whole assembly is upright and at right angles.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person work recommended: one supports the unit, other clamps for accuracy.
    • Opposite side board already marked; no need to remark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this solo risks shelves falling out and dropping. Work with two people or lean against wall for support.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive twelve 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes of the opposite side board from outside into shelf boards' edges. This completes fixing side boards and shelf boards, finishing the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, check each shelf's horizontal level with level. Loosen and adjust if any shelf is tilted.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously causes distortion. Fix all shelves on one side first, then the opposite.
  11. 11

    Checking Overall Level and Diagonals

    ≈ 15 min

Place the constructed unit on floor and check level of each shelf with level. Measure diagonals (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) with tape measure. Confirm difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust, then re-tighten screws.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference greater than 5mm indicates parallelogram shape. Correct before attaching back board.
    • Back board increases rigidity. Fix distortion before back board installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging (center lower than edges) worsens under book weight. 600mm shelf length is acceptable; consider reinforcement over 1000mm.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Board

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back board on bookshelf rear aligning all corners and matching diagonals with main frame. Position the back board carefully to correct minor distortions. Temporarily fix back board with masking tape on frame.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back board is critical to prevent warping; misaligned mounting reduces rigidity.
    • Use stapler for simple fixing; when using small nails, pre-drill pilot holes.

    Watch out

    • If back board is larger than frame, trim excess. If smaller, leave even gaps up to 5mm at edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling Back Board

    ≈ 20 min

Attach back board to side and shelf boards using a stapler (15mm staples) or small nails spaced every 100-150mm along all edges and shelf board joints. Begin stapling at corners, then along diagonals, to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler costs 1500-2500 yen at home centers and is faster than nails; worth investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions with pencil on back board before stapling to avoid missing shelf fastenings.

    Watch out

    • Staple tips protruding inside can damage books. 15mm staple length is proper for 19mm thickness.
    • Staple along all edges and shelf positions to prevent back board sagging.
  14. 14

    Preparing to Attach L-Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Position four 50mm L-brackets at top back left and right, two per side. One side is to attach to bookshelf top edge, the other to the wall. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs before fixing.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Low-cost stud finders may be low accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Wall studs are typically spaced 455mm apart; once found, adjacent positions can be estimated.

    Watch out

    • Drywall alone can't hold screws for tipping prevention; must fix to studs.
    • If L-bracket positions don't align with studs, adjust brackets sideways to screw into center of stud.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Fix four L-brackets onto the bookshelf's upper side boards' outer sides with 38mm coarse-thread screws into the bracket screw holes. Attach flush with side board surface or less than 5mm protruding, oriented so the bent bracket side faces the wall perpendicular.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket orientation: bent portion faces wall, screw holes face bookshelf.

    Watch out

    • Improperly aligned bracket causes gap with wall during fixing. Confirm with level.
  16. 16

Setting up Bookshelf and Wall Fixing

    ≈ 20 min

Move the bookshelf to its place upright (two people recommended). Align close to the wall and insert 45-50mm coarse-thread screws through L-bracket wall screw holes into studs to fix. Fix all four points completing tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for walls; use 45-50mm screws that reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is the most important step; skip it risks injury or suffocation in earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone are not strong enough. Always screw into studs.
    • If gap between wall and brackets exceeds 5mm, insert shim before fixing; gap reduces bracket effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Clean entire bookshelf with vacuum and dry cloth to remove wood dust, oil, and fingerprints completely. Pre-paint cleanliness greatly affects finish quality. Optionally mask plywood back board as it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wipe in three steps for perfect cleaning: dry wipe, wet wipe, dry wipe again.

    Watch out

    • Residual wood dust causes rough paint surfaces. Check with lighting.
  18. 18

    First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) over entire surface with brush. Sequence: side board outside, shelf board top, shelf board inside, back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe excess with dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total oil amount for first coat as absorption is heavy.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application process is: apply, wait 10-15 min, then wipe. Not wiping leaves sticky residue.
    • 30-50mm wide brush optimal for bookshelf; too large misses details.

    Watch out

    • Skipping wiping causes sticky finish lasting over a week.
    • Plywood absorbs oil quickly and can result in uneven color; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying from first coat, apply second coat at 30-50% volume of first coat. Remember to wipe excess. Two coats deepen color and increase protection. Allow full drying 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects color unevenness from first and should be applied thin and evenly.
    • For deeper color, adding a third coat is optional.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget wiping on second coat as thick layers cause unevenness.
    • Dry indoors protected from dust and insects during drying.
  20. 20

    Completion, Usage Start, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full drying (48 hours), place books and start using. Store heavy books on lower shelves and lighter books on upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week, re-check screws and L-bracket fixing and tighten if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Place heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) concentrated on bottom two shelves; use lighter paperbacks on top.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore sheen and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing can transfer oil stains; always allow 48+ hours drying.
    • Books absorb moisture; in rainy season, use dehumidifiers to avoid shelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
